    Serum Immunoglobulin A (IgA) in Lichen Planus

    Lichen planus is a chronic disease of skin. It causes a characteristic rash that can occur alone or as a feature of other autoimmune disorders and syndromes affecting skin, mouth, nails and genitals. An estimated 1.2% of population suffers from this disease. In this paper, we find the patients of lichen planus, who have not given any drug and they do not have any previous case history and compare IgA level in the age group 20-40 years control and the patients. It is concluded in this paper that IgA level in Lichen planus patients are highly significant p<0.001

    Quinalphos Induced Antioxidant Status and Histopathological Changes in the Gill of the Freshwater Fish, Oreochromis mossambicus

    To extend the knowledge about quinalphos induced antioxidant status and its related changes on the histopathology of gills, the freshwater fish Oreochromis mossambicus was chosen as a model system. Quinalphos treatment (0.5μl/ L for 30 and 60 days) decreased the activities of antioxidant enzymes with concomitant increase in the production of malondialdehyde. Increased reactive oxygen species generation coincides with the increase in the protein carbonyl in the gills of the treated fishes. Histological observation in the gill of quinalphos treated animal for 60 days showed several alterations as hypertrophy of gill arches, lifting of lamellar epithelium, degeneration of gill filament and lamellar epithelium and vasodilation in the lamellar axis when compared to the control group. These observations suggest that chronic exposure to pesticide affect the respiratory oxidative potential of the freshwater fish and this could be possibly due to quinalphos induced oxidative stress in the gill

    Assessment of Nutrition Profile of Pregnant Women in Rural Area (Mymensingh District) of Bangladesh

    Malnutrition is the most common nutritional disorders in the developing countries like Bangladesh. The most vulnerable groups of population to malnutrition are under-5 children, pregnant women and lactating mother. This study makes an attempt to investigate the nutritional status of pregnant women and to correlate different factors with pregnancy. The cross-sectional study was followed to determine nutritional status by anthropometric and biochemical assessment as well as clinical appearance. The obtaining result of all assessments was compared with standard data (NCHS & UNHCR/WFP). A total of 380 pregnant women were randomly selected from health care centers (governments and non-governments) in the Mymensingh district of Bangladesh from early June 2007 to January 2008. The result of research showed that 30.52% severely malnourished, 36.57% moderately malnourished, and 23.15% well nourished and 9.73% were overnourished by calculating weight gain during different stages of pregnancy. By using Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) 28.94%, 35%, 25.26% and 10.78% of pregnant women were found severely malnourished, moderately malnourished, well nourished and overnourished respectively. It observed that the prevalence of nutritional status to pregnant women were found 29.69% severely malnourished, 34.39% moderately malnourished, 26.36% well nourished and 9.56% over nourished by observing the clinical appearance. In average it showed that 29.71% were severely malnourished, 35.32% were moderately malnourished, 24.92% were well nourished and 10.02% were overnourished. By estimating hemoglobin (Hb) level during pregnancy it obtained that 5.52% severely anemic, 61.84% moderately anemic, 18.15% mildly anemic and 14.47% of pregnant women were nonanemic. In my study, 12.63% of pregnant women were under 18 years old while 50% were severely malnourished and 30.4% were malnourished. It found that the primary education levels were 16.57% and total monthly family incomes of 16.57% of pregnant women were below Tk. 5000. Most of them (73.66%) were malnourished because of those stated reasons. In Mymensingh district, the major responsible factors were younger marriage, frequent birth, illiteracy, poverty, misconceptions, food taboos, lack of nutritional knowledge, geographical location (hill tract region) etc. The data obtained from my study is very much alarming and need to address by governments and nongovernmental organization

    Using of Chroococcus sp. to Treat Polluted Water with Cadmium & Nickel

    Chroococcus sp. was exposed to different concentrations 0.3, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 ppm, from cadmium and nickel. The results revealed that the ability of the alga to remove cadmium and nickel was increased with the increase of the metal concentration which the alga exposed to them and this case does not record before. This may relate to mechanisms of adsorption and removal which not understood perfectly till now according to many researches that concerned with this field of studies. It was noticed that the removal percentage of cadmium reaches to 77.66 & 76% in the two higher concentrations 6 & 7 ppm, which exposed to the alga till the last day (twelve days) from the experiment, but same percentage (77.66 & 76%) was recorded on the eighth day of the experiment to remove nickel and decrease to 12.5 & 28% on the last day of the experiment for the above two concentrations

    Isolation, Purification and Characterization of Oxygen Insensitive Azoreductase from Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Biodegradation of Azo Dye - Methyl Red

    A Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated from water sample from Industrial effluent and was tested for decolorization activity against commercially important dye of Methyl red. Percentage dye degradation by the isolated Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found to be 90%. The enzyme involved in degradation azoreductase was assayed and purified by anion-exchange chromatography. Total activity of the purified enzyme was 22.5U/mg. The enzyme gave a single band in the SDS–PAGE with a molecular weight of 29 kDa (approximately). The maximal azoreductase activity was observed at pH 7.0 and at 37°C. This activity was NADH dependent. Several metal ions inhibited the purified enzyme including Fe2+ and Hg2+

    Biosand Filter for Removal of Chemical Contaminants from Water

    Numerous reports by the United Nations and the World Health Organization have indicated a significant worldwide problem with water pollution and inaccessibility to potable drinking water. Due to technological and economical barriers, the problem with water pollution is particularly more serious for under-developed and developing countries. The present study is aimed at designing, constructing and evaluating a cost-effective biosand filter was undertaken. Results indicated the removal of up to 80% total hardness, 86% chlorides, 96% turbidity and 90% colour. Moreover, the filter’s performance was appraised by the absence of E. coli in the filtered sample. The filter describes the proven bioremediation technology and its ability to empower at-risk populations to use naturally occurring biology and readily available materials as a sustainable way to achieve the health benefits of safe drinking water

    Anti-Allergic Compounds from Red Tomato Peel

    Daily food habit with anti-allergic activities is expected to prevent the onset of allergic diseases and ameliorate allergic symptoms. The red color of ripe tomato fruit is due mainly to the accumulation of the carotenoid all-trans-lycopene, which is produced during fruit ripening. Red tomato peel extract (RTPE) contain lycopene (450mg/ kg) and has been found to have anti-allergic effects on man compare its flesh extract and yellow tomato peel extract (YTPE). RTPE could possibly inhibit histamine release and relieve the symptoms of all types of allergy including cedar pollinosis. To evaluate the anti-allergic effect of RTPE, we performed a research study randomized, on three groups in 50 perennial allergy patients with red peel extract; yellow peel extract; tomato flesh and Dextrin (20 healthy university students as control). All patients using oral administration of red tomato peel extract (RTPE); yellow/pink tomato peel extract (YTPE) and tomato flesh extract (TFE) 30mg per day /patient each group and Dextrin as control (30mg per day /patient each group) for 56 days. We found that the skin test for allergy score significantly decreased in the RTPE group only at the end of the trial compared to the beginning and treated with YTPE and TFE groups. Besides this, we also found that sneezing score decreases significantly at the end of experiment time compare to the beginning (p<0.03). There were decreasing tendencies of rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction in the RTPE group. The patients quality of life was significantly improved in the RTPE group after 56 days of treatment (p=0.02) but not in YTPE; tomato flesh extract (TFE) and dextrin group. A significant improvement in total symptom scores, combining sneezing, rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction, was observed after oral administration of RTPE for 56 days (p=0.01). Thus, this evidence will be helpful for the development of low molecular compounds for allergic diseases and it is expected that a dietary menu including an appropriate intake of carotenoids (fruits & vegetables) may provide a form of complementary and alternative medicine and a preventative strategy for allergic diseases

    Nutritional Evaluation of whole Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) seed meal in Rats

    The study reported herein evaluates with rats the nutritional quality of raw and roasted kenaf seed as sources of nitrogen. Some safety aspects regarding possible feed use were also investigated. Wistar rats were fed four purified diets viz: a basal diet (nitrogen-free), a reference diet that contains casein and two diets made of kenaf seeds. Dietary treatments significantly influenced performance, biological indices and blood parameters (P<0.05). The performance of rats on kenaf based diets was inferior to that of rats on casein diets. The levels of serum glucose were significantly elevated for rats on kenaf based diets compared to rats on casein diet. However, the levels of serum total protein, globulin and albumin/globulin ratio were significantly elevated for rats on the casein diet compared to rats on kenaf based diets. Among the kenaf test proteins, Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER) values of 1.87 and 1.65; Net Protein Ratio (NPR) values of 0.56 and 0.50; Biological Value (BV) of 65.04 and 63.05 and Net Protein Utilization (NPU) values of 44.23 and 42.56 were obtained respectively for a raw kenaf seed meal RKM) and roasted kenaf seed meal (HKM). There was no significant difference in results obtained for both RKM and HKM

    Comparative Study for the Effect of Gibberellic acid, Kinetin and Indole-3-acetic acid on Seed Germination performance of Dianthus caryophyllus

    Seed germination is the major limiting factor for large-scale production and cultivation of crop species. Such attribute also positively as well as negatively affected by some potent plant growth regulators and other chemical compounds. For this, present experiment was undertaken with an objective to investigate the comparison of the effect of various concentrations of plant growth regulators like Gibberellic Acid (GA3), Kinetin and Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) on seed germination of Dianthus caryophyllus or Carnation. Dianthus seeds were soaked in different concentrations (0 ppm or control, 10, 20, 30 and 40 ppm) of each of GA3, Kinetin and IAA for 24 h at room temperature (25±2°C). Three replicates of each treatment with ten seeds per replicate were arranged for precise physiological analysis. Significant variation was found in all aspects after analysis of variance (ANOVA) of each mean value. After two weeks of seed soaking, it was noted that germination percentages were significantly accelerated by lower concentrations (10 and 20 ppm) of used hormones. Amongst the three potential growth regulators, 20 ppm was found most effective because it showed highest germination percentage for GA3 (87.46%), Kinetin (78.92%) and IAA (75.35%). A great deal of information relating to seed germination practices shows that these plant growth regulators were efficient to overcoming dormancy leading to rapid seed germination. GA3 was selected as best hormone, in this study, which showed highest seed germination. These results could useful to large-scale cultivation of Dianthus caryophyllus plants for improving its floricultural impact worldwide

    Heartwood Extractives of Robinia pseudoacacia Wood

    In this study, extracts from the heartwood of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) were obtained with ethanol solvent before and after extraction with n-hexane. Chemical composition were analyzed and compared by GC-MS. The results showed that the major components in the heartwood ethanol extract before extraction with n-hexane solvent to be the (23S)-ethylcholest-5-en-3.beta.-ol (18.33%), while the major heartwood ethanol extracts constituents after extraction with n-hexane solvent was resorcinol (51.96%). The same components of the heartwood ethanol extracts before and after extraction with n-hexane solvent also contained amounts of the Hexadecanoic acid and 9,12-Octadecadienoic acid (Z,Z)-. The other main components of the ethanol extract mainly contained about 13.75% stigmasterol, 9.35% 9,19- Cyclolanostan-3-ol, 24-methylene-, (3.beta.)-, 7.11% Lup-20(29)-en-3- one, 6.27% 9,12,15-Octadecatrien-1- ol, (Z,Z,Z)-, 6.06% Hexadecanoic acid 4.54% Ergost-5-en-3-ol, (3.beta.)-, and 3.53% campesterol
