How Christian Upbringing Divides the Religious Nones in Britain: Exploring the Imprints of Christian Upbringing in the 2016 EU Referendum
Over the last few decades, Britain has witnessed a significant decline in Christian affiliation and the corresponding growth in the number of religiously unaffiliated individuals. Relatively little attention has, however, been paid to ‘former Christians’ who were brought up in a Christian household but now identify as having no religion. This study focuses on the effects of Christian upbringing on the voting behaviour of religious nones in the EU referendum of 2016. Using data from the 2016 British Social Attitudes survey, the empirical analysis in this article examines the socio-cultural characteristics of Anglican, Catholic, and ‘Other Christian’ households as well as their role in shaping the voting turnout and the voting intentions of individuals who are religiously unaffiliated. The results suggest that Anglican upbringing and Catholic upbringing serve as salient proxies for national identities among the secular groups. Additionally, in the EU referendum, the voting behaviour of religious nones with different kinds of Christian upbringing was very distinct. This reveals that religious upbringing is a source of within-group variety among British religious nones and that Britain’s Christian heritage still has important socio-political implications despite the decrease in the country’s Christian population.</p
Developing learning relationships in intercultural and multi-disciplinary environments:A mixed method investigation of management students’ experiences
In this article, we suggest that competencies in working in intercultural and multidisciplinary environments are part of expected key skills in contemporary organisations. Higher educational institutions across the globe are pressured to contribute to the development of such key skills. Using social identity theory, through social network analysis of 113 postgraduate management students in one UK business school and follow-up focus group interviews (N = 16), we have identified three types of learners: Co-National Learners, Bridge-Building Learners, and Cross-National Learners. We argue that developing learning relationships in intercultural and multidisciplinary environments needs to go beyond a cultural-only approach, and the understanding of identity has an important place
Evolution of Excitation-Contraction Coupling
In mammalian cardiomyocytes, Ca2+ influx through L-type voltage-gated Ca2+ channels (VGCCs) is amplified by release of Ca2+ via type 2 ryanodine receptors (RyR2) in the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR): a process termed Ca2+-induced Ca2+-release (CICR). In mammalian skeletal muscles, VGCCs play a distinct role as voltage-sensors, physically interacting with RyR1 channels to initiate Ca2+ release in a mechanism termed depolarisation-induced Ca2+-release (DICR). In the current study, we surveyed the genomes of animals and their close relatives, to explore the evolutionary history of genes encoding three proteins pivotal for ECC: L-type VGCCs; RyRs; and a protein family that anchors intracellular organelles to plasma membranes, namely junctophilins (JPHs). In agreement with earlier studies, we find that non-vertebrate eukaryotes either lack VGCCs, RyRs and JPHs; or contain a single homologue of each protein. Furthermore, the molecular features of these proteins thought to be essential for DICR are only detectable within vertebrates and not in any other taxonomic group. Consistent with earlier physiological and ultrastructural observations, this suggests that CICR is the most basal form of ECC and that DICR is a vertebrate innovation. This development was accompanied by the appearance of multiple homologues of RyRs, VGCCs and junctophilins in vertebrates, thought to have arisen by ‘whole genome replication’ mechanisms. Subsequent gene duplications and losses have resulted in distinct assemblies of ECC components in different vertebrate clades, with striking examples being the apparent absence of RyR2 from amphibians, and additional duplication events for all three ECC proteins in teleost fish. This is consistent with teleosts possessing the most derived mode of DICR, with their Cav1.1 VGCCs completely lacking in Ca2+ channel activity.</p
Adverse Drug Events and Medication Relation Extraction in EHRs with Ensemble Deep Learning Methods
Objective: Identification of drugs, associated medication entities and interactions between them are crucial to prevent unwanted effects of drug therapy, known as Adverse Drug Events (ADEs). This paper describes our participation to the n2c2 shared-task in extracting relations between medication-related entities in Electronic Health Records (EHRs). Materials and Methods: We proposed an ensemble approach for relation extraction and classification between drugs and medication-related entities. We incorporated state-of-the-art NER models based on BiLSTM networks and CRFs for end-to-end extraction. We additionally developed separate models for intra- and inter-sentence relation extraction and combined them using an ensemble method. The intra-sentence models rely on BiLSTMs and attention mechanisms and are able to capture dependencies between multiple related pairs in the same sentence. For the inter-sentence relations, we adopted a neural architecture that utilizes the Transformer network to improve performance in longer sequences. Results: Our team ranked third with a micro-averaged F1-score of 94.72% and 87.65% for relation and end-to-end relation extraction respectively (Track 2 and 3). Our ensemble effectively takes advantages from our proposed models. Analysis of the reported results indicated that our proposed approach is more generalizable than the top performing system, which employs additional training data and corpus-driven processing techniques.Conclusions: We proposed a relation extraction system to identify relations between drugs and medication-related entities. The proposed approach is independent of external syntactic tools. Analysis showed that by using latent Drug-Drug interactions we were able to significantly improve the performance of non-Drug–Drug pairs in EHRs.<br/
Brian Ferneyhough’s 'Transit', the London Sinfonietta, and the emergence of complexity in 1977
In November 1977 the London Sinfonietta began its tenth-anniversary season with a performance in London of Transit by Brian Ferneyhough. The concert marks a significant moment in the formation of Ferneyhough’s public persona, just as the tenth-anniversary season marked a turning point for the London Sinfonietta. In this article I undertake a microhistory of this performance in order to ascertain how Ferneyhough’s reputation for complexity was forged in Britain. Rooted in performance and reception history, and based around close readings of key tropes, I show that early critical opinion ranged from sympathetic to ambivalent or curious; yet it never developed into the type of hostility commonly referenced in critiques of New Complexity. The historical detail of this pivotal performance, I argue, suggests the need for a broader cultural history attuned to the transitional state that characterizes both the history and the historiography of new music in the late seventies

High Resolution Chemical Analysis of Electrical Trees through AFM-IR Spectroscopy
Accurate modelling of electrical tree growth is dependent upon a physical and chemical understanding of the insulation and degradation processes on the scale of the tree branches. While imaging techniques for the physical elements of tree growth have improved in recent years, those for the chemical regime are lagging behind. In this paper AFM-IR (Atomic Force Microscopy-Infrared Spectroscopy) is applied to a non-conducting tree channel grown in epoxy resin. This provides chemical analysis with a spatial resolution of 50 nm. The distinct chemistries from within buried channels, exposed channels and the epoxy bulk are revealed for the first time.</p
