No full textThis volume demonstrates novel ways to study military health care in Europe from the 1660s to the 1830s. The book uses a sociocultural mode to scrutinize the impact of values, habits and behaviour on the quality and effectiveness of military health care. It looks beyond the battlefield and considers the consequences of war for societies, while presenting female and male perspectives. The book explores individual performance and achievements of actors active in civil service, and examines the duality of informal and formal systems of military health care related to their impact on health and recovery. It improves our understanding of early modern military welfare and the emergence of public health.Dieser Band gewährt Einblick in die Entwicklung militärischer Gesundheitsversorgung in Europa von den 1660er bis zu den 1830er. Dabei wird einen soziokulturellen Ansatz gewählt, um die Auswirkungen von zeitgenössischen Werten, Praktiken und Verhaltensweisen auf die Qualität und Effektivität der militärischen Gesundheitsversorgung zu untersuchen. Es blickt über das Schlachtfeld hinaus und betrachtet die Folgen des Krieges für die Gesellschaft, wobei weibliche und männliche Perspektiven dargestellt werden. Das Buch erforscht die individuellen Leistungen der im Öffentlichen Dienst tätigen Akteure und untersucht die Dualität informeller und formellen Systeme einer militärischen Gesundheitsversorgung. The renewal of post-war Manchester
No full textThis book is about an exciting time in the development of European cities – from the 1950s to the 1970s – when capital flowed, energy was cheap and abundant, citizens were more mobile than ever before, and a new optimism was embodied in popular culture. The experiences of the Second World War provided the spatial, technological and governmental foundations for the modernisation of Britain. New technologies were born of war and regional political structures were also a product of conflict. Certain British cities were the testing ground for new ideas in planning and architecture, amidst new statutory contexts and a raft of policy implemented to order the built environment. This title focuses acutely on these networks and tracks the relationships between central and local government and their influence on buildings, public space and infrastructure. It uses the planning and architecture of Manchester as a case through which to reveal shifts in politics, economics and culture in the post-war period. It is part urban history, part planning history and part architectural history. For the first time, it uncovers the complex forces acting upon the production of space in the renewal cities of the 1960s and the close and direct relations between state legislation, planning policy definition and architectural production. Backgrounded by the global meta-narratives of the Cold War, decolonisation and the rise of consumer capitalism, the major empirical chapters show how international forces also impacted and influenced the development of cities

Preventing Violence argues that we can move towards safer and better societies by advancing holistic public health approaches to violence prevention.
It explores the serious limitations of contemporary public health approaches and proposes an alternative path forward. Based on data from a three-year, ESRC-funded project 'Public Health, Youth and Violence Reduction', it also examines in-depth the work of 20 Violence Reduction Units in England and Wales.
The book makes clear recommendations for policy makers, practitioners and researchers working to prevent violence and improve the lives of children and young people
Families Affected by Addiction
No full textThis Open Access book sheds new light on the wide range of Affected Family Members' experiences. At a conservative estimate, there are at least 100 million adults across the globe who are affected by their relatives’ addiction problems. These Affected Family Members (AFMs) experience multiple stresses, coping dilemmas, and a lack of information and support, and are at heightened risk for ill-health. The results are very costly, both from the personal and from the public services point of view. The volume elaborates on the barriers to providing effective help, including political neglect, under-representation in both policy and service delivery models, the lack of involvement and encouragement from health and social care professionals, the stigmatisation and bias as barriers to care, and the range of evidence-based interventions. It also explores the similarities and differences of all of these areas depending on the type of addiction problem that the family is affected by – alcohol, illicit drugs, gambling, etc. While covering the more commonly reported work in high-income countries, the contributions put strong emphasis on the experience of AFMs in low- and middle-income countries. Given its truly global approach, the book will be a key resource for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers alike

It presents pioneering empirical studies and novel theoretical and methodological approaches to unmet needs and care poverty.

No full textThis volume offers a series of cross-cultural, in-depth studies of twelfth- to fifteenth-century medieval Troy narratives, mainly romances. Source texts are situated across a wide range of language traditions and include famous literary highlights (e.g. Benoît, Guido, Tzetzes and Eustathios) as well as lesser-known work (e.g. the Irish tradition) and expert comparative analyses within the same language traditions (e.g. Middle English, German).
With a unique synchronical focus, it highlights the classical reception of religious and supernatural elements, events and characters in the Middle Ages, embedded in the contemporary socio-cultural (notably Christian-political) ideological context. The volume subscribes to the transnational perspective that has long since proven its relevance for medieval studies and actively builds bridges between the ‘eastern’ Byzantine and ‘western’ vernacular traditions, which on a scholarly level are often still segregated

Wie der Band zeigt, kann es vielfältige Perspektiven und Antworten darauf geben, was eine proletarische oder sozialistische Pädagogik ausmacht und wie es zu verstehen ist, dass diese von den materiellen Bedingungen von Bildung ausgeht und die Erfahrungen und Bedürfnisse der Arbeiter:innen in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Die Beiträge nähern sich dem Gegenstand entsprechend aus unterschiedlichen Richtungen: Zunächst werden die verschiedenen Elemente und Konzepte einer proletarischen Pädagogik rekonstruiert, wie sie bedeutende Protagonist:innen entwickelten, und dabei auch die Kontroversen nachgezeichnet, die sich um diese Konzepte entfachten. No full textThe work carried out in the city of Sarno represented, for the students of the last year of the 5UE Architecture degree course, an experiment of great relevance from a design point of view, dealing with a fragile, complex, heterogeneous territory, trying to combine an approach aimed at seeking an adequate response to the multiple needs posed by the context. The publication collects the results of the work carried out during the 2022-2023 academic year. The structure of the book reflects an experimental approach which, from the “Essays” section to the “Projects” section, explores the city starting from some emerging themes and issues: through the filter of wastescapes in reference to the territorial, environmental, and social context; in the openness
to comparison at the occasion of the presentation of the results of the work and the design reflections to the institutions and the community; arriving at the systematization, through a synthesis, of the information and investigations carried out through the project proposals. Together, the different project experiments try to provide possible transformative scenarios about open questions for the city, with the aim of remedying existing critical issues, but also of enhancing the potential and the different heritages that characterize the city of Sarno and the surrounding area, such as the river landscape, the historical and archaeological heritage, the areas at risk, the public facilities in a state of abandonment. The projects were in fact built starting from a mechanism of reuse and grafting into the existing, extending and incorporating urban pieces of different nature. Scenarios of new possible re-significations are, therefore, the result of this work, linked to the idea of Sarno as a multi-landscape city.Publishe
