No full textThe turbulent/non-turbulent interface (TNTI) is an irregular boundary between turbulent and irrotational flow, which widely exists in various flow types, such as turbulent boundary layer, combustion flame front, turbulent patches in atmosphere and ocean, pollutant dispersion, etc. Due to its importance in affecting the intermittent characteristic and the mixing and entertainment process of turbulent flows, TNTI has become one of the most active branches of turbulent research in the past decades. Nevertheless, the scientific community still faces various challenges that hinder an ultimate characterization and modelling of TNTI. The unresolved problems, to name a few, spread from the lack of a well-accepted definition of TNTI to the intriguing origin of its fractal multi-scale nature. The dynamics of TNTI, which is the key for the mechanism of the exchange of mass, momentum and energy between turbulence and irrotational outflows, also deserves an interpretation from the perspective ofturbulent structures. This book presents the proceedings of the "IUTAM Symposium on turbulent/non-turbulent interface in turbulent shear flow' will be held in 2024, Oct. This book will collect the up-to-date works from active researchers worldwide to anchor the state-of-art knowledge of TNTI and to envision the future direction of this field. The focus includes but is not limited to the scaling for the geometries, kinematics and dynamics of TNTI, the role of turbulent structures in the entrainment process, multiphase flow with TNTI, high-fidelity turbulent model that accounts for the intermittency of TNTI, and reduce-order-model-based prediction for engineering application. The content is a valuable reference for researchers, engineers and students who are interested in understanding the complex behavior of TNTI in turbulent shear flows. This is an open access book

The book argues for the constitutive role of imagination in ethical deliberation, but acknowledges that there exist important limits to its use. However, “limit” is here understood not merely negatively as restriction and insufficiency, but rather positively as “condition of possibility,” so what the book explores and analyses are the conditions for a positive and fruitful use of the imagination in ethics. The book uses as a “frame” the questions and issues raised in J.M. Coetzee’s The Lives of Animals to explore some central and salient themes
The Networks of Hans Werner Henze's Drei Tentos
No full textSince at least their formative recording on Julian Bream’s LP 20th Century Guitar (1967), Hans Werner Henze’s Drei Tentos have been recognised as a central constituent in the canon of contemporary music for solo guitar. When dealing with the compositions, however, there often occurs a certain disregard for the fact that in terms of their genesis and structure they are situated within a complex network: of others of Henze’s compositions (Der sechste Gesang, Maratona, Neapolitan Songs, and Kammermusik 1958, in which the Tentos are embedded), of their respective semantics and of Henze’s personal acquaintances who are linked to them (Ernst Schnabel, Luchino Visconti, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Peter Pears, Benjamin Britten, Julian Bream). The book asks how to deal with these references, after the legitimacy of a guitar-typical isolation of the Tentos as an independent work cycle and whether and how a disentangling of Henze’s networks influences the listening to, the playing and an »understanding« of his music: whether it is indispensable, or at all desirable.Publishe

Drawing on long-term anthropological fieldwork in a Catholic English Benedictine monastery, this book traces the monks’ daily lives as they confront the eternal in the fabric of the everyday. Bringing into focus the vow of stability – a lifelong commitment to the monastery and its community – this ethnography explores the rhythms and architecture that sustain shared life in a world of movement and fleeting interaction. At the same time, it analyses those social processes that damage and undermine the monastic institution and those in contact with it – in particular the harm caused by sexual abuse. Engaging with the everyday dynamics of life in close community while paying close attention to the time-depth of monastic history, this is a study of how religious institutions endure and change through generations

No full textPublishedEn el siglo XXI, los mercados alimentarios enfrentan turbulencias marcadas por el alza de los costes energéticos y tensiones geopolíticas, que afectan los precios de los alimentos. Este trabajo evalúa la evolución de dichos precios y su relación con la energía, con un enfoque en propuestas para mejorar la cadena agroalimentaria de la Comunitat Valenciana. A partir de un diagnóstico basado en datos estadísticos, se desarrollaron talleres multi-actor que identificaron mejoras desde una visión participativa. Las propuestas incluyen superar la atomización del sector, optimizar la logística y la digitalización, fomentar la colaboración público-privada y promover innovaciones tecnológicas y organizativas. Además, se subraya la necesidad de garantizar transparencia en la cadena, educar en hábitos de nutrición responsable, y reconocer la responsabilidad compartida en asegurar el derecho a la alimentación, lo cual implica transformaciones normativas y culturales en la sociedad
