With a Pure Conscience
No full textOffers new perspectives on freedom of conscience and religious liberty by tracing their origins to the Middle Ages, thereby challenging the common assumption that these core tenets of modernity were products of the EnlightenmentDeeply committed to the formation of a just and sacred society, medieval theologians and canonists developed sophisticated arguments in defense of religious liberty and freedom of conscience. They did so based upon the conviction that each human person possesses an inalienable right to pursue his or her spiritual vocation and to inquire into the truth, provided that such pursuits were not deemed injurious to the commonweal. For this was an age in which all power, whether secular or sacred, was held to be exercised legitimately only insofar as it served the common good. Within these basic parameters there existed a domain of personal freedom guaranteed by natural and divine law that could not be infringed by either secular or ecclesiastical authority. Theologians and canonists did not countenance blind obedience to reigning powers nor did they permit Christians to stand idle in the face of manifest transgressions of sacred tradition, constitutional order, and fundamental human rights. Such foundational principles as the sacred domain of conscience, freedom of intellectual inquiry, dissent from unjust authority, and inalienable personal rights had been carefully developed throughout the later Middle Ages, hence from the twelfth through the fifteenth centuries. Contrary to the popular conception, therefore, the West did not need to wait for the Protestant Reformation, or the Enlightenment, for these values to take hold. In fact, the modern West may owe its greatest debt to the Middle Ages. With a Pure Conscience sheds further light on these matters in a variety of contexts, within and without the medieval university walls, and often amid momentous controversies. This was a robust intellectual culture that revered careful analysis and vigorous disputation in its relentless quest to understand and defend the truth as it could be ascertained through both reason and revelation.With a Pure Conscience: Christian Liberty before the Reformation is available from the Knowledge Unlatched on an open-access basis

Shoulder Fractures in Context
No full textThis open access book offers comprehensive coverage of all relevant aspects of shoulder fractures, also known as fractures of the proximal humerus, with a special focus on existing controversies in their treatment. Throughout the volume the author outlines the development of the modern scientific understanding in the field and the increasing operative approach to these injuries throughout the 20th century. The volume is subdivided into five sections, the first of which introduces shoulder fractures, their morphology and epidemiology. The second one presents their history, from the earliest known medical text in ancient Egypt to the mid-twentieth century. In the third part, the author discusses the challenges implied in understanding and translating fracture patterns into hierarchies and classification systems. Based on current clinical trials, part four casts new light on the existing tension between an increasing interest in surgical procedures and implants, and the failure of emerging empirical evidence to demonstrate benefits for the vast majority of patients. In the book’s conclusions, elaborating on this evidence, the author shares his reflections on the changing approaches to shoulder fractures and interprets them within a broader context of intellectual history. This book appeals to a broad readership, including orthopaedic residents, shoulder surgeons, traumatologists, and other clinical decision-makers, and those with an interest in evidence-based practice and the history and philosophy of medicine

Agent AI for Finance
No full textThis open access book provides an overview of the current state of financial argument mining and financial text generation, and presents the authors’ thoughts on the blueprint for NLP in finance in the agent AI era. Financial documents contain numerous causal inferences and subjective opinions. In a previous book, “From Opinion Mining to Financial Argument Mining” (Springer, 2021), the first author discussed understanding financial documents in a fine-grained manner, particularly those containing opinions. The book highlighted several future directions, such as financial argument mining, multimodal opinion understanding, and analysis generation, and anticipated a lengthy journey for these topics. However, since 2022, ChatGPT and large language models (LLMs) have shown promising advancements, motivating the authors to write this second book on the topic of financial Natural Language Processing (NLP). Agent-based AI systems have been widely discussed since the advent of LLMs. This book aims to equip researchers and practitioners with the latest methodologies, concepts, and frameworks for developing, deploying, and evaluating AI agents with capabilities in multimodal understanding, decision-making, and interaction. It places a special emphasis on human-centered decision-making and multi-agent cooperation in financial applications. The book surveys the current landscape and discuss future research and development directions. Targeting a wide audience, from students to seasoned researchers in AI and finance, this book offers an overview of recent trends in Agent AI for finance. It provides a foundation for students to understand the field and design their research direction, while inviting experienced researchers to engage in discussions on open research questions informed by pilot experimental results. Although this book focuses on financial applications, the discussed concepts and methods can also be applied to other real-world applications by integrating domain-specific characteristics. No full textThe ever-shifting terrain of Translation Studies Since the inception of Translation Studies in the 1970s, its researchers have held regular metareflections. Largely based on the assessment of translation and interpreting as two distinct but related modes of language mediation, each with its own research culture, these intradisciplinary debates have sought to take stock of the state of research within an ever-expanding discipline in search of (institutional) identity and autonomy. Recharting Territories proposes a more widespread and systematic intradisciplinary approach to researching translational phenomena, one which can be applied at various analytical levels – theoretical, conceptual, methodological, pragmatic – and emphasize both similarities and differences between subdisciplines. Such an approach, rather than consolidating a territorial attitude on the part of scholars, aims to raise awareness of the ever-shifting terrain on which Translation Studies stands.
