The Anglo-Saxon Agricultural Revolution in Norfolk
<p>In the 25 years since the Sedgeford Historical and Archaeological Research Project (SHARP) began fieldwork in north-west Norfolk, Sedgeford has emerged as a major site for investigating the agricultural revolution of ‘the long 8th century’. The period between <em>c</em>. AD 650 and 850 saw the consolidation of kingdoms, the rise of the Church, the creation of great estates, the transformation of agriculture, and the development of emporia, craftwork, and long-distance trade in prestige goods. These proceedings present the results of a day conference held in 2020 which reviewed the results of 25 years’ work at Sedgeford in the context of new discoveries and changing ideas about the Middle Anglo-Saxon period in Norfolk, England as a whole and the wider contemporary world.</p>
40 Years of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea
This book discusses contemporary challenges within the law of the sea, a domain of international law extensively codified in United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Given the considerable time elapsed since the convention’s adoption and nearly three decades of its implementation, the book analyses the interplay and influence of its provisions on international customary law, as well as to identify issues arising from its application. The book explores and discusses crucial aspects of the law of the sea, addressing challenges and future perspectives related to UNCLOS provisions, such as the delimitation of maritime areas, maritime security, safety, environmental protection, and the implications of advancing technologies, particularly in the realm of unmanned vessels. Additionally, the book delves into recent maritime legal challenges arising from the conflict in Ukraine and the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The book will be of interest to students and scholars in the field of the law of the sea, international relations and international law
Exploring Emotions in Customer Experience Research
This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 License. It is free to read, download and share on Elgaronline, thanks to generous funding support from the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. This thought-provoking book examines the role of emotions in customer experience research. Małgorzata Budzanowska-Drzewiecka and Adrian Lubowiecki-Vikuk explore methods of capturing mixed emotional states throughout the consumer journey, covering core theoretical issues and providing much-needed practical guidance.Publishe
Understanding Human-Nature Practices for Environmental Management
Nature has often been understood in literature through a disjunction to human systems. This can be seen in the nature-culture binary, or even more clearly in the opposition of ‘wilderness’ to ‘civilization’. Drawing on historical and present-day examples and case studies from Northern Europe, this book critically examines the ways in which the use of such dichotomies can be transcended to respond to sustainability challenges. Using illustrative examples, the authors demonstrate how shared histories and development of land use continue to impact multiple practices today. The book explores the prerequisites for environmental management approaches that counterpose the nature-culture binaries that are present in existing governance mechanisms. This volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental management, environmental law and policy and environmental anthropology
Reflexive Urban Governance
This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 License. It is free to read, download and share on Elgaronline.com. This innovative book sets out the concept and potential of reflexive urban governance. It argues that combining the practices of urban governance with continuous reflexivity on the assumptions underlying urban policies allows stakeholders to develop collaborative problem-solving capacity and to learn from the successes, failures and outcomes of policy interventions.Publishe
Today's TBB
This open-access book serves as a comprehensive guide for C++ programmers looking to master Threading Building Blocks (TBB). Authored by two experts in TBB and parallel programming, the book distills decades of collective experience in developing and teaching parallel programming concepts, presenting insights in a clear and accessible manner. Today’s TBB starts with foundational principles, explaining key concepts and terminology used in parallel programming. It then introduces the major components of TBB including parallel algorithms, flow graphs, and task groups that help you fully leverage the power of multicore systems. The book emphasizes TBB's higher-level parallelism capabilities, which facilitate the creation of portable, scalable applications for modern CPUs. Key topics, including memory management in parallel contexts and effective synchronization for data structures, are well explored, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of these critical concepts. Later chapters delve into advanced topics including cancellation, exception handling, composability, performance tuning, and transitioning legacy code from older versions of TBB to Today’s TBB. For nearly two decades, TBB has been invaluable to programmers, and this book leverages the latest advancements in C++ alongside TBB to enhance your parallel programming capabilities. TBB excels in unlocking the performance of code that is not well-suited for accelerators, making it an essential tool in the realm of parallel computing. If you work with technologies like CUDA, SYCL, or OpenCL for accelerated computing, mastering TBB will also enable you to orchestrate parallelism effectively on the host CPU, optimizing performance in the face of Amdahl’s Law. What You'll Learn Create Scalable Code: Use TBB for portable, simple, and efficient programming. Parallelization Strategies: Implement best practices for intensive tasks. High-Performance Applications: Develop scalable parallel programs. Modern C++ Compatibility: Apply TBB with C++17 and later. Code Migration: Update legacy TBB code to leverage C++17 and Today’s TBB. Think Parallel: Orchestrate parallelism in the entire computer system to your advantage. Who This Book Is For C++ programmers eager to harness the power of parallelism on multicore systems. Today’s TBB is accessible to those with limited experience, with C++ or parallelism, providing clear guidance on best practices and techniques. Experienced programmers will find valuable insights for refining their skills, addressing advanced topics such as cancellation, exception handling, composability, and performance tuning. No prior experience in parallel programming or multicore processors is necessary; however, those with some background will discover even more depth and value throughout the book.
Minority Memory, Identity, and Reconciliation
Migration and minority rights are increasingly at the forefront of global discourse. Minority Memory, Identity, and Reconciliation explores the lives of two often overlooked minority communities: the Greek Orthodox minority in Istanbul, Türkiye, and the Turkish Muslim minority in Western Thrace, Greece. As empires dissolved, the leaders and political elites of new, smaller nations that emerged embarked on population exchanges to increase the ethnic and religious homogeneity of their nation-states. Although these two minority communities differ in religious, ethnic, and socioeconomic terms, they both offer unique perspectives on what happens to people who live on what is perceived as the wrong side of an arbitrarily drawn border.
Drawing from the personal stories of members of these two minority communities regarding their struggle with displacement, discrimination, and cultural assimilation, as well as comprehensive historical analysis, this book examines how historical traumas, national policies, and sociopolitical dynamics have influenced contemporary minority memory and identity formation. By incorporating interviews with community leaders, civil society representatives, and state officials, this book offers a rich, multifaceted perspective on the processes of memory and identity formation that underscores the broader implications of these processes for international relations in the region and minority rights. Gül M. Gür pulls together theories of nationalism, collective memory, and narrative practice to highlight the unique process of minority memory work and its role in sustaining minority identity and their advocacy efforts
