War and Diplomacy in Modern Japan

    No full text
This open access book examines the life and work of Koki Hirota, who served as Japan's foreign minister and prime minister from 1933 to 1938 - the period that saw the final Japanese diplomatic attempts at achieving a modus vivendi with China before the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War. It looks at the failed attempts to prevent that war from evolving into a protracted conflict. Hirota's actions and inactions during this time resulted in a death sentence at the Tokyo Trials following the end of the Second World War, making him the only civilian official to meet such a fate. Hirota is seen as a martyr-like figure in Japan, but this book counters this public image by showing how, despite initially championing a cooperative relationship with China as foreign and prime minister, he continually acquiesced to the military's demands before being swept away by the rise of populist politics that followed early Japanese success in the Second Sino-Japanese War. As the first biography of Hirota to be published in English, this book provides an in-depth account of Sino-Japanese relations and Japanese diplomacy during this critical period and examines the ultimate failure of the civilian government to check the adventurism of the Japanese army. It is relevant to historians of Japan, and to those interested in diplomatic history, and the Second World War - as well as scholars working in various areas of contemporary East Asian politics

    Krisen und Transformationen

    No full text
Crises are not a new phenomenon for educational science. At present, however, crises such as climate change, the banking crisis, refugee movements, the coronavirus pandemic, the energy crisis and wars are bringing the disruptive, disparate and threatening to the fore. As such, crises and transformations also challenge educational discourse and pedagogical action. The 29th Congress of the German Society for Educational Science explored the associated questions from a variety of perspectives and with different focal points. This volume documents the central contributions to the congress and provides an insight into the latest discourses.

    No full text

    Holography and Its Applications

    No full text
Optical holography is a promising non-contact 3D imaging technique. Effectively using the coherence property of the light, the optical holography can store the interference information of the object light beam with the reference light beam in a holographic recording medium or a digital camera and retrieve/read-out the 3D image information. Optical holography offers storage, three-dimensional imaging and displays, industrial non-destructive testing and surface profiling, virtual and augmented reality, holographic teleconferencing, and product design and prototyping. This book presents a few recent advancements in holography and its applications

    Cold War Museology

    No full text
Cold War Museology is the first volume to bring together interdisciplinary and international contributions from leading practitioners and academics specialising in Cold War museology. Bringing the most recent historiography of the Cold War into conversation with museological theory and practice, chapters within the volume analyse the current condition of Cold War museology. By unpicking some of the unique challenges facing museum specialists dealing with the Cold War, this book takes a lead in developing the collection, display and interpretation of this history. The chapters question what makes a Cold War object; address the complexity of Cold War time; face up to questions of Cold War race, gender and imperialism; and reveal how to materialise the Cold War imaginary in museums. Most importantly perhaps, the volume demonstrates that, a consideration of the interconnecting forces of global twentieth-century history enables experts to add important complexity and nuance to the narratives with which they work and improve visitor understandings through innovative interpretations. Cold War Museology will encourage readers towards a more nuanced, holistic and inclusive approach to Cold War materiality in museums. It will be of great interest to academics, museum professionals and students engaged in the study of museums, heritage and the Cold War, as well as those with an interest in archaeology, media, culture and memory

The Risks and Ethics of Human Gene Editing

    No full text
This Open Access book is about the risks and the ethics of human germline gene editing, i.e., the possibility to make heritable changes to the DNA of early human embryos or germ cells. Is there something particularly morally problematic about editing the human germline? Is there something unique about germline editing, and, if so, does this suggest that we ought not to edit the human germline, or only in particular circumstances or for particular purposes? What would be a wise and responsible approach to editing the human germline from a moral perspective? The book has three broad aims. First, to present an inclusive map over the current scholarly debate on the ethics of human germline gene editing. Second, to provide a philosophical and critical guide to the various ideas and arguments in this debate. Third, to apply an ethics of risk perspective and defend a morally cautious position on human germline gene editing

22: Access to civic learning: gaps, trends and trade-offs

    No full text
This chapter explores inequalities in access to civic learning opportunities in high school. Civic education is conceived of in a broad sense and may include school councils, an open classroom environment, debating clubs, and formal citizenship education. We review the literature on accessing citizenship education in schools across the world. While the existing literature is able to give an initial indication of patterns in access, gaps in the evidence base emerge. This chapter begins to fill some of these gaps with a new analysis of data from two major international surveys on civic education: CIVED and ICCS. We explore whether different models of civic learning are in a competitive, trade-off relationship; how different opportunities relate to civic outcomes; whether there are inequalities in access to civic learning based on a knowledge acquisition model; and whether inequalities in access to civic learning opportunities have changed over time. Our findings suggest that participatory learning opportunities are more strongly associated with certain civic and political engagement outcomes than a knowledge acquisition approach to learning, but that these approaches are not in a trade-off relationship. We discuss our findings with a focus on the practical implications for teachers and researchers of civic education.Publishe
