    EIB Investment Report 2024/2025

    No full text
The European Union must solidify its position as a global leader in technology, innovation and clean energy. By addressing key challenges and leveraging existing strengths, Europe can enhance its competitiveness, foster economic growth and show the world how to successfully transition to green energy. In short, Europe needs to: Better integrate the EU single market and simplify access to it. Market fragmentation caused by regulatory and structural differences hinders the businesses’ ability to take full advantage of the wider European market. This is particularly true for innovative firms – 60% of exporters cite regulatory inconsistencies as a barrier to expanding their business. Simplifying regulatory compliance could reduce costs, which currently account for about 1.8% of turnover for firms and 2.5% for small and mid-size companies. Marshal investment for innovative young firms and the broader digital transformation. Europe has a strong research base and industrial capacity, but innovative firms often have difficulty finding funds to scale their business. European firms have also made less progress integrating big data analysis and artificial intelligence into their production and services – the share of EU firms using these services is 6 percentage points lower than in the United States. Improving this adoption could bring significant productivity gains for European firms. Push forward with the green transition. Europe needs to combine its ambitious climate goals with a realistic and pragmatic roadmap that would help companies seize the opportunities presented by the green transition. The energy revolution is in full swing. Renewable energy supplied almost half (48%) of Europe’s electricity demand in 2024, with emissions from power generation falling 13% during the year. Europe’s climate leadership is also paying off economically, as EU companies profit from growing exports of low-carbon technologies. European exports in those products have risen 65% since 2017, compared with 79% for China and only 22% for the United States. By fostering collaboration, targeting investments and maintaining a consistent regulatory framework, Europe can capitalise on its strengths to drive sustainable growth, technological leadership and economic resilience in an increasingly competitive global landscape

    Blockchain Technology in Project Finance

    No full text
There is currently no comprehensive scientific study that addresses the problem of financing projects using Distributed Ledger (blockchain) Technology (DLT) that are not themselves embedded in the blockchain ecosystem, particularly in the context of long-term and capital-intensive investments. This book fills this gap. It poses a number of research questions such as what financing model/mechanism is the most effective in the long term where very large financial resources are concerned; are there appropriate legal regulations in place; and can DLT (blockchain) technology provide usability and solutions that can be used in the process of financing capital-intensive investments? The book ultimately shows that it is possible to build a legal and economic model that would effectively enable the financing of long-term and capital-intensive investments, based on a specially prepared integrated platform operating on the basis of blockchain technology. As a result of the mechanisms of smart contracts, the platform would enable, the issuance and service of tokens, including equity tokens, but also auxiliary and payment or utility tokens, and the automation of relations between stakeholders. It would also allow the creation of a virtual decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that would control the implementation of the project, and a decentralized exchange that would enable token trading. The core readership for the book is academics, scholars and researchers in the fields of economics, finance and law, particularly those focused on blockchain technology, distributed ledger systems, and innovative financing mechanisms for large-scale investments. Policymakers and regulators involved in developing policies and legal frameworks for blockchain technology, cryptocurrencies, and financial innovation would find it to be a practical reference

    Expert Consensus in Science

    No full text
This Open Access book shows how expert consensus pervades all areas of science. It explores, in particular, the role of consensus in establishing scientific truth, in guiding professional practice and policy and agreeing on what are acceptable scientific methodologies. For some scientific issues, a consensus forms spontaneously among scientists working on a topic, while for others, where the issues are complex, a formal deliberative consensus process is commonly needed. Deliberative consensus processes are becoming more important as scientists increasingly deal with complex multi-disciplinary issues of policy importance such as climate change due to human activity. While deliberative consensus processes are commonly used, they often lead to criticism from consensus skeptics. The book argues that deliberative consensus processes in science can be improved and proposes a number of realistic ways forward, ending with a discussion of whether communicating the scientific consensus on a topic is a good way to persuade the public
