    Der Beginn der kulinarischen Moderne

    No full text

    Global Maritime Military Strategy, 1980–2023

    No full text
This open access book is an ambitious study about how to use comparative methods to analyze contemporary military strategy in the maritime domain. Based on the three strategic concepts of area denial, sea control and power projection, this book analyzes the intensive conventional capabilities of six major powers’ military strategies. These include the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan, the so-called ‘sea powers,’ and Russia, China and India, which are usually recognized as ‘land-powers.’Through the analysis, this book aims to accomplish the following three main objectives: 1. To reconsider the basic concepts of maritime military strategic studies, which have not changed for almost one hundred years, and to propose a new analytical framework based on the following three elements—as well as verifying the appropriateness of this framework. a. The capability with which a country can deny military threat against its territory through the maritime domain within the geographic theater, i.e., roughly one thousand to two thousand kilometers from its coastline (area denial). b. The capability with which a country can obtain military superiority or disrupt an adversary’s military superiority in the open ocean (sea control). c. The capability with which a country can project military power from the maritime domain to other countries’ territories, accomplishing military strategic objectives (power projection). 2. To verify the six major powers’ long-term military strategic objectives, for example, whether the country aims to enhance its power in the maritime domain, or to project its military power to the other countries/areas beyond the maritime domain; to do this by analyzing each country’s force building directions. In addition, this book assesses each country’s capability for high-intensive conflict and unravels each security/military strategic objectives.3. By examining the strategic objectives of major powers, this book may contribute to establishing Japan’s future defense strategy

Praxis de la enseñanza del proyecto

    No full text

    Chapter 5 A Motor-Flight through North Africa

Edith Wharton was not only the author of novels and short stories but also of drama, poetry, autobiography, interior decoration, and travel writing. This study focuses on Wharton’s symbolic representations of architecture in her travel writings. It shows how a network of allusions to travel writing and art history books influenced Wharton’s representations of architectural and natural spaces. The book demonstrates Wharton’s complex relationship to works of art historians (John Ruskin, Émile Mâle, Arthur C. Porter) and travel authors (Wolfgang Goethe, Henry Adams, Henry James) in the trajectory of her travel writing. Kovács surveys how the acknowledgment of Wharton’s sources sheds light both on the author’s model of aesthetic understanding and scenic architectural descriptions, and how the shock of the Great War changed Wharton’s travel destinations but not her symbolic view of architecture as a mediator of things past. Wharton’s symbolic representations of architecture provide a new key to her travel writings

    Political Instability in Guinea-Bissau

    No full text
How can we make sense of the persistent political instability in Guinea-Bissau, a small country that has hosted extensive international interventions and made world news headlines over several decades? This book tackles this question, arguing for the need to understand politics in Guinea-Bissau as intricately linked to and deeply embedded in transnational, regional and trans-regional dynamics. Taking a multidimensional approach, the book brings together international scholars who have studied politics in Guinea-Bissau and Africa for many years, at different levels and from diverse perspectives. Together, the contributors provide an up-to-date analysis of crucial actors and processes, whilst also putting them in historical perspective. The volume connects the study of politics in Guinea-Bissau to a range of empirical phenomena and theoretical debates that have wider relevance far beyond its borders. In this way, it enables a better understanding of regional and international politics, demonstrating how apparently marginal cases are not marginal at all, but are actively entangled in broader multi-dimensional politics. With important new perspectives and insights both on Guinea-Bissau, and wider regional dynamics, this book will be an important read for researchers and policy makers involved in African politics and security issues
