Outbreak! Containing, Translating and Transmitting Biosecurity Grey Literature
Biosecurity research focuses on invasive species. The dissemination of biosecurity research is hampered by three major issues. First, biosecurity research is not always published and can be difficult to access. Second, biosecurity participants ask questions in different ways, with terminology varying between participants and the research literature. Third, it is difficult to identify overlaps and gaps in the research literature, partly due to access and translation issues. The Centre of Excellence for Biosecurity Risk Analysis (CEBRA) is addressing these problems by developing the Biosecurity Risk Research Portal (Portal). In this paper, we discuss a system that extracts and transforms open-access grey literature research to meet domain-specific information needs. We discuss new controlled vocabularies that support metadata extraction. We show how controlled vocabularies and repository services may be co-developed, ensuring practitioner information needs are met responsively. The Portal connects metadata sources including government, industry and research institutions where open access to full text is available. We describe functional modules, including metadata extraction, metadata harmonisation, tagging and transformation of metadata into graph-shaped data ready for analytic applications. We introduce controlled vocabularies, including the Biosecurity Thesaurus. We discuss the inputs to new vocabularies such as corpus analysis, survey data and biosecurity frameworks
Economic consequences of climate change impacts on South Asian agriculture: A computable general equilibrium analysis
South Asia is one of the most vulnerable regions of the globe in terms of climate change, with agriculture the most affected economic sector of the region. This study employs an environmental Global Trade Analysis Project model to simulate the impact of an average global 2°C temperature increase by 2050, with a focus on South Asian countries. The economic costs of climate change in relation to crop productivity losses due to increasing temperature, land productivity losses caused by rising sea levels and heat stress-induced agricultural labour productivity losses are assessed based on model simulations. The results show that the unfavourable climate change impacts on agricultural productivity (crop, land and labour) will reduce food production and create upward pressure on food prices. This will lead to a reduction in food consumption at the household level, threatening future food security in the region. The results further predict a contraction in all South Asian economies by 2050, due to adverse climate change impacts on the agricultural sector. In addition, out of the three climate change damage factors considered, labour productivity causes the greatest economic losses, while land productivity losses caused by rising sea levels impact the least. The study also found that low-income countries would suffer most severely due to the impacts of climate change on the agricultural sector, while high-income countries would be impacted the least

Our response to the Regional Futures prompt is a sensory representation of resources that are at risk and essential for the future of regional lives. The examination began with the enduring themes of poet and activist Judith Wright and her early years in our region (Armidale/New England).

Wright examined consequences of colonial and settler policy, the use of resources and ultimately the stewardship of the landscape. Unsurprisingly, matters that remain in the discourse of this region. Discussing these topics has elicited ideas and issues specific to the New England from experts and community members we have engaged with.

This has allowed us to solidify the scope of our 2-part enquiry: How is management of regional resources embedded in the future we envision, and how can this be represented in an audio-visual output? Our single channel video work features site specific sound gathered and brought into an accompanying audio and musical composition, using the Alcaic stanza as an experimental device for editing the imagery. A borrowed theme from Wright's 'Northern River'.

By examining the historical contexts, political dynamics, and public sentiments that led to these leaders’ downfalls, I aim to provide a short analysis of the shifting political landscape in Asia. This exploration not only highlights the causes and consequences of these dramatic changes but also offers insights into the future trajectories of these nations
‘It’s not a priority’: Australian generalist classroom teacher experiences of teaching the Health Education component of Health and Physical Education
AbstractThe study purpose was to address a gap in the literature and gain a better understanding of Australian, specifically Tasmanian, primary school classroom teachers’ experiences of teaching health education (HE). By classroom teachers we mean generalist primary teachers, who in Australia typically teach all eight key learning areas (KLAs). In most Australian states and territories, HE exists within the health and physical education (HPE) mandated KLA, but often the delivery of HE is a responsibility assumed by classroom teachers as opposed to HPE specialists. Our study involved 53 primary classroom teacher participants in Tasmania and examined the state of play of HE. We used a mixed methods research design that included an online survey through which participants were subsequently invited to take part in semi-structured interviews. While participants tended to value HPE, we found HE was even more disenfranchised than physical education, within HPE as an already marginalised area, compared to “more academic” KLAs. This “double marginalisation” contributed to reports of inconsistent delivery of HE. Consistent with the health promoting schools agenda, we suggest a whole of school approach in addition to increased collaboration between teachers and increased HE professional learning opportunities for classroom teachers is required to facilitate change and increased prioritisation of HE in schools

Objectives: The study investigated the locomotor and tackle pacing profile and loads of female rugby league players following various between-match turnaround durations. Specifically, the study examined the (1) pacing of locomotor and tackle loads across the time-course of a match and; (2) whole-match and peak locomotor and tackle loads of match-play.Methods: Microtechnology data were collected from elite female rugby league players (n = 172) representing all National Rugby League Women’s teams (n = 6 teams) across two seasons. Players were categorised into backs, adjustables, forwards or interchange players. Data was calculated for the wholematch (m), per minute (m.min−1) and peak (running: m.min−1; acceleration: m.s−2) locomotor and tackle loads (number and efficiency (%)) of match-play. The pacing as well as the locomotor and tackle loads of match-play were examined following short (≤6 days), normal (7 days) or long (≥8 days) turnarounds.Results: The pacing profile of playing positions varied across short, normal and long match turnarounds. Trivial to moderate differences existed in the whole-match, per minute and peak locomotor loads across match turnaround durations (effect size ≤ 1.2).Conclusions: Following various between-match turnaround durations (i.e., short, normal and long match turnarounds), there were variations in the locomotor and tackle pacing profile and loads whereby, the pacing profile of positional groups was more affected than the load profile. The findings can be used in applied settings to guide the recovery strategies and training plans of female rugby league players to optimise performance and wellbeing across various match turnaround durations
Method optimisation for prolonged laboratory storage of Ascaridia galli eggs
Eggs in the infective stage of the chicken nematode Ascaridia galli are often required for in vivo andin vitro studies on this parasite. The reliability of any artificial A. galli infection depends on the viability and embryonation capacity of A. galli eggs. The aim of this study was to determine ideal storage conditions for maximising the viability of A. galli eggs and maintaining viability for the longest period. A 2 × 2 × 3 × 5 factorial experimental design was employed to investigate the effects of storage temperature (4◦C or 26◦C), storage condition (aerobic or anaerobic), storage medium (water, 0.1 N H2SO4 or 2% formalin) and storage period (4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 weeks). The viability of eggs was assessed after eggs in all treatment groups were held aerobically at 26◦C for 2 weeks after the storage period to test embryonation capacity. Based on morphological characteristics, they were categorised as undeveloped, developing, vermiform, embryonated or dead. The maintenance of viability during storage at 4◦C was optimal under anaerobic conditions while at 26◦C it was optimal under aerobic conditions. Anaerobic conditions at 26◦C led to a rapid loss of viability while aerobic conditions at 4◦C had a less severe negative effect on maintenance of viability. Egg storage in 0.1 N H2SO4 resulted in a significantly higher viability overall (54.7%) than storage in 2% formalin (49.2%) or water (37.3%) (P A. galli eggs decreased significantly with storage time (P 2SO4. Eggs in these treatments retained up to 72% of overall viability at 20 weeks with a decline rate of approximately 2% per week with no significant difference between the two. Therefore, this study has clearly revealed opposing aerobic conditions required for prolonged storage of A. galli eggs in the preembryonated state at 4◦C. It has also identified that 0.1 N H2SO4 provides the best preservation against degradation during storage, particularly at 26◦C under aerobic conditions. Achieving strictly anaerobic conditions can be difficult to achieve so storage aerobically at 26◦C may be preferred for simplicity
