Expression-Invariant 3D Face Recognition Using Patched Geodesic Texture Transform
Numerous methods have been proposed for the expression-invariant 3D face recognition, but a little attention is given to the local-based representation for the texture of the 3D images. In this paper, we propose an expression-invariant 3D face recognition approach based on the locally extracted moments of the texture when only one exemplar per person is available. We use a geodesic texture transform accompanied by Pseudo Zernike Moments to extract local feature vectors from the texture of a face. An extensive experimental investigation is conducted using publicly available BU-3DFE face databases covering face recognition under expression variations. The performance of the proposed method is compared with the performance of two benchmark approaches. The encouraging experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can be used for 3D face recognition in single model databases

Recognizing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' rights and perspectives through civics and citizenship
The development of a deep understanding of the rich and ancient cultures and histories of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their battle to achieve citizens' rights and equity in Australia has been neglected or excluded from the education of many young Australians for too long. Being urged to develop understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing, viewing and relating to the world can open up community dialogue and insights in to the 'First Australians' lives and perspectives, but the lack of emphasis on teachers' learning in the past means it is a challenging task. This article discusses how the implementation of the new civics and citizenship subject and other aspects of the Australian Curriculum meets this challenge across the nation. The perspectives of Indigenous Australians are now well represented in the overall intent of the curriculum, in the specific focus on Indigenous histories and cultures in the cross-currriculum priority and in the ethical and intercultural understanding general capabilities section of the curriculum. It explores key questions and concepts in the curriculum and examples of elaborations suggested for developing this learning in schools. It also addresses the challenges that still need to be grappled with in schools and in teacher education, to ensure that the enactment of this intended curriculum can lead to transformation in attitudes and greater equity in communities across Australia in culturally respectful and inclusive ways
Pose-invariant 2.5D face recognition using Geodesic Texture Warping
In recent years, 3D face recognition has become a popular solution to deal with the problem of pose-invariant face recognition. The majority of 3D face data are, however, actually 2.5D which are sensitive to pose variations. This paper presents a novel Geodesic Texture Warping (GTW) solution for 2.5D pose-invariant face recognition. In this method, we use the geodesic distance computed on a 2.5D face scan to warp the texture of a rotated face to that of a frontal one to perform matching. A feasibility and effectiveness investigation for the proposed method is conducted using a wide range of experiments including samples with different face rotations. The encouraging experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves much higher accuracy than the state-of-the-art method with a low computational cost
The Electrostatic Origins of Specific Ion Effects: Quantifying the Hofmeister Series for Anions
Life as we know it is dependent upon water, or more specifically salty water. Without dissolved ions, the interactions between biological molecules are insufficiently complex to support life. This complexity is intimately tied to the variation in properties induced by the presence of different ions. These specific ion effects, widely known as Hofmeister effects, have been known for more than 100 years. They are ubiquitous throughout the chemical, biological and physical sciences. The origin of these effects and their relative strengths is still hotly debated. Here we reconsider the origins of specific ion effects through the lens of Coulomb interactions and establish a foundation for anion effects in aqueous and non-aqueous environments. We show that, for anions, the Hofmeister series can be explained and quantified by consideration of site-specific electrostatic interactions. This can simply be approximated by the radial charge density of the anion, which we have calculated for commonly reported ions. This broadly quantifies previously unpredictable specific ion effects, including those known to influence solution properties, virus activities and reaction rates. Furthermore, in non-aqueous solvents, the relative magnitude of the anion series is dependent on the Lewis acidity of the solvent, as measured by the Gutmann Acceptor Number. Analogous SIEs for cations bear limited correlation with their radial charge density, highlighting a fundamental asymmetry in the origins of specific ion effects for anions and cations, due to competing non-Coulombic phenomena
What’s new in Language and Law in Education and Training
The Law and Linguistics Interdisciplinary Researchers’ Network (LLIRN) came into being in 2019, after an initial symposium involving a group of academics and students, mainly from Australian universities, whose research is interested in the various intersections of language and law. One of the symposium’s key goals was to learn more about each other’s work and create new opportunities to collaborate.Six years later, the LLIRN has grown and we’ve held events, published a law journal special issue that showcased the work of several of our (mainly early career) members, and maintain a lively and growing mailing list, now with members from at least 43 different countries, at diverse stages of their careers, including students, academics, language and legal professionals, and those in policy and decision-making roles.Since the Network’s inception, one key area of concern is how best we can work – individually and as a community – to integrate law and language expertise in various educational and training contexts, be it working with students in schools or universities, or with professionals in legal settings.In 2024, we set up a blog series to learn (or “LLIRN”) more about each other, and to make our learning public so that others can learn more about us too. In this latest post, we provide a snapshot of some our Network’s activities related to education. We conceive this theme broadly to include both people who have done research in an educational context, where there is a focus on language and law, and also those who have integrated a language and law focus into education or training that they have designed or delivered, whether in a university or beyond
The influence of CO2 concentration and soil phosphorus supply on the growth and nodulation of two Desmanthus cultivars
Tropical pasture legumes such as Desmanthus are expected to improve the productivity of the extensive grazing systems of northern Australia. This is because legumes increase forage quality and fix atmospheric nitrogen. However, little is known about the influence of soil phosphorus (P) supply on legume growth and nodulation in mixed pasture swards that include highly-competitive C4 grasses. Furthermore, predicted increases in CO2 concentration may influence the relative competitiveness of tropical pasture legumes. A controlled-environment pot trial was conducted to investigate the influence of CO2 concentration (250, 500 and 750 ppm) and soil P supply (3, 10 and 40 mg P kg–1) on the growth of two Desmanthus spp. cultivars (cvv. JCU 7 and JCU 9). The legumes were grown both as monocultures and as mixed swards with Premier Digit (Digitaria eriantha). Legume shoot yields and tissue P concentrations increased in response to soil P supply. On average across the treatments, the proportion of cv. JCU 9 in the mixed grass/legume swards was 1.9-fold higher than that of cv. JCU 7. In general, legume competitiveness decreased at higher CO2 concentrations. Under monoculture conditions, legume nodule size increased in response to soil P supply but not CO2 concentration, and the nodules of cv. JCU 9 were generally larger than that of cv. JCU 7. These results demonstrate that there are differences in competitiveness and nodulation among cultivars of Desmanthus which are likely to influence forage quality and atmospheric nitrogen-fixation. Consideration should be given to both shoot yield and potential nitrogen-fixation when applying P fertiliser for optimum pasture production
Debating the Moral and Political Economies of Convictism: Samuel Marsden’s Essays on Agriculture and the Spirit Trade in Early New South Wales
Samuel Marsden's essays on agriculture and the spirit trade, written circa 1807, are read as early examples of colonial economic thought. Marsden lamented the corrupting influence of the spirit trade, which encouraged drunkenness and idleness, undermining agriculture, 'the great source of national wealth'. Accordingly, he called for strict government control over prices and markets, a ban on barter for spirits or grain and compulsory agricultural labour. These views can be interpreted as an argument for a more moral economy, in which convicts were reformed and redeemed through agricultural labour within an orderly community of deferential convict labourers, emancipist small-holders, and paternal masters. But this influential vision of the colony would become the basis for a future political economy of convictism, a novel discourse that understood the colonial economy as centred on the productivity of convict labour

La liberté syndicale est indispensable à l’institution syndicale. Au Bangladesh, les dispositions qui protègent déjà ce principe restent inopérantes dans la confection. Les autorités doivent pouvoir s’appuyer sur un cadre législatif capable de promouvoir la syndicalisation dans le secteur. Pour les auteurs, ce cadre devrait mobiliser les compétences et ressources complémentaires des différents acteurs en présence (État, industriels locaux, syndicats et marques internationales) et les amener à s’engager et agir sur le long terme pour améliorer la situation des relations professionnelles dans l’industrie de la confection au Bangladesh, à la fois sous l’angle socio-économique et sous l’angle politique
