    Wash in, But: The Influence of Contextual Factors on Preservice Teachers’ Use of the Game Sense Approach During Field Experiences

    Purpose: Pedagogies and teaching approaches learned at universities can be “washed out” of physical education teachers when they begin working in schools. However, less research has examined whether they have been adequately “washed in” to preservice teachers at universities. This study utilized occupational socialization theory to investigate whether the game sense approach had been adequately washed into Australian preservice teachers. Methods: A mixed methods approach was used. Survey data (N = 52) helped identify whether wash-in had occurred, before individual interviews (n = 20) identified the influence of acculturation, professional socialization, and contextual factors on field experiences. Results: Findings indicated that wash-in had occurred to some extent and that preservice teachers intended to use the approach. However, use was limited by contextual factors such as content, student behavior, and team teaching. Conclusion: Organizational socialization is often to blame for washout. However, more information should be collected on professional socialization

    Molecular determinants and interaction data of cyclic peptide inhibitor with the extracellular domain of TrkB receptor

    TrkB is a high affinity receptor for the brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its phosphorylation stimulates activation of several intracellular signalling pathways linked to cellular growth, differentiation and maintenance. Identification of various activators and inhibitors of the TrkB receptor and greater understanding their binding mechanisms is critical to elucidate the biochemical and pharmacological pathways and analyse various protein crystallization studies. The data presented here is related to the research article entitled “Brain Derived neurotrophic factor is involved in the regulation of glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) signalling” [1]. Cyclotraxin B (CTXB) is a disulphide bridge linked cyclic peptide molecule that interacts with TrkB receptor and inhibits the BDNF/TrkB downstream signalling. This article reports for the first time binding mechanism and interaction parameters of CTXB with the TrkB receptor. The molecular model of CTXB has been generated and it’s docking with TrkB domain carried out to determine the critical residues involved in the protein peptide interaction

    Thresholds of Experience: Food, Embodiment, and Artificial Simulation in Popular Culture

    Experiencing popular culture involves more than detached spectatorship. In contemporary media environments, culture is encountered through bodies, senses, and technologies, leaving impressions that are at once physical, emotional, and collective. To watch a television drama over dinner, to attend a themed screening in costume, or to follow a TikTok recipe inspired by a favourite film is not just to consume culture but to engage in practices that inscribe themselves into appetite, routine, and identity. Experience is not incidental to popular culture; it is its medium expressed through gestures, textures, tastes, and affects that go beyond narrative.Recent scholarship has framed experience as a critical category for understanding media. Studies in design and technology emphasise the structuring of interaction through frameworks such as User Experience (UX) and Experience Design (XD), which highlight how systems are crafted for immersion and engagement (Norman; Hassenzahl). Yet these models remain limited, as they centre on designed interfaces rather than on lived experience. In popular culture, experience extends far beyond engineered usability: it emerges through embodiment and through the ways people inhabit, repeat, and rework cultural texts in everyday life. Food provides a particularly sharp way to think this through. As Barthes notes, food is “a system of communication” through which social meaning is organised and shared (24), while Counihan argues that eating is a prism refracting gender, power, and identity (8). Food is at once symbolic and material, code and calories: something represented and something tasted. Popular culture continually mobilises this duality. Meals, snacks, hunger, and feasts as experiences mark class, intimacy, crisis, and aspiration. Even when audiences cannot literally taste what they see, culinary media activates gustatory imagination: the capacity to recall flavours, anticipate textures, or feel bodily responses such as hunger, desire, or disgust

    This study investigates the electrocatalytic performance of binary MnO/NiS and ternary MWCNT@MnO/NiS composites as platinum (Pt) free counter electrodes (CEs) for triiodide reduction in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The MnO and NiS components form mixed phase structures, MnO/Mn₃O₄ and NiS/Ni₃S₄, respectively, while multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) function as a conductive scaffold to enhance charge transport. The composites were synthesized via a solvothermal method and thoroughly characterized using a combination of structural and electrochemical techniques. Both MnO/NiS and MWCNT@MnO/NiS electrodes demonstrated significantly lower charge transfer resistance than the conventional Pt CE, indicating superior catalytic activity. When integrated into DSSCs, the MnO/NiS and MWCNT@MnO/NiS electrodes achieved power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 8.66% and 9.29%, respectively, surpassing that of the Pt based device (8.54%) under identical testing conditions. The enhanced performance is attributed to the synergistic effects between the redox active mixed metal phases and the high conductivity and surface area of MWCNTs. Additionally, the devices exhibited excellent long term operational stability, underscoring the potential of these composite materials as cost effective and durable alternatives to noble metal CEs in next generation solar energy systems

    Computational refinement identifies functional destructive single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with human retinoid X receptor gene

    Alterations in the nuclear retinoid X receptor (RXRs) signalling have been implicated in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis and glaucoma. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are the main cause underlying single nucleic acid variations which in turn determine heterogeneity within various populations. These genetic polymorphisms have been suggested to associate with various degenerative disorders in population-wide analysis. This bioinformatics study was designed to investigate, search, retrieve and identify deleterious SNPs which may affect the structure and function of various RXR isoforms through a computational and molecular modelling approach. Amongst the 1,813 retrieved SNPs several were found to be deleterious with rs140464195_G139R, rs368400425_R358W and rs368586400_L383F RXRα mutant variants being the most detrimental ones causing changes in the interatomic interactions and decreasing the flexibility of the mutant proteins. Molecular genetics analysis identified seven missense mutations in RXRα/β/γ isoforms. Two novel mutations SNP IDs (rs1588299621 and rs1057519958) were identified in RXRα isoform. We used several in silico prediction tools such as SIFT, PolyPhen, I-Mutant, Protein Variation Effect Analyzer (PROVEAN), PANTHER, SNP&Go, PhD-SNP and SNPeffect to predict pathogenicity and protein stability associated with RXR mutations. The structural assessment by DynaMut tool revealed that hydrogen bonds were affected along with hydrophobic and carbonyl interactions resulting in reduced flexibility at the mutated residue positions but ultimately stabilizing the molecule as a whole. Summarizing, analysis of the missense mutations in RXR isoforms showed a mix of conclusive and inconclusive genotype–phenotype correlations suggesting the use of sophisticated computational analysis tools for studying RXR variants

    Australian validation of the Universal Mental Health Literacy Scale for Adolescents

    Objective: In order to support mental health help-seeking for Australian adolescents, it is imperative to understand and improve their mental health literacy (MHL). MHL measures are needed to identify MHL needs and to evaluate MHL interventions; however, a standardised MHL measure is yet to be validated for Australian adolescents. The current study aimed to validate the Universal Mental Health Literacy Scale for Adolescents (UMHL-A) with Australian adolescents. Method: Participants were recruited through a national recruitment company and included 402 Australian youth, 15 to 18 years old. First, the factor structure of the UMHL-A was evaluated through confirmatory factor analysis. Second, reliability was assessed through internal consistency and item-total score reliability. Finally, convergent and divergent validity were appraised. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis validated the structure of the UMHL-A with good fit indices for the four factors of help-seeking efficacy, stigma, knowledge of mental health, and knowledge of mental illness. Moreover, adequate reliability, convergent and divergent validity were demonstrated. Conclusion: This evaluation of the UMHL-A enables theoretically grounded and psycho-metrically validated measurement of MHL with Australian adolescents. The UMHL-A has widespread application in research and practice, for clinicians, schools, mental health services and government policies

    Administrative scale economies in public organisations: evidence from Australian public universities

    A voluminous empirical literature has examined scale economies in public organisations, particularly in local government. By contrast, little effort has been directed at the empirical investigation of economies of scale in higher education administration, including in Australian universities. To address this gap in the empirical literature, this paper examines administrative scale economies and task density in Australian public universities for the period 2009/10–2018/19 using a pooled data framework. We find that there are administrative scale economies in Australian universities and that task density is a key determinant of administrative intensity. In addition, regional universities exhibit a higher level of administrative intensity than their metropolitan counterparts. We conclude by canvassing some of the main public policy implications of our findings
