    EXTERNAL BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT AND PERFORMANCE OF SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES IN KADUNA STATE: THE MEDIATING ROLE OF INNOVATION

    The aim of this study is to investigate how innovation function as a mediator in the relationship between the technology and socio-cultural environments, as well as how well Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) function in Kaduna State. Based on the knowledge-based theory of the company, the research aims to understand how technological and socio-cultural contexts affect the performance of SMEs. There are 495 SMEs in the state that make up the research sample. Owners and managers of particular SMEs were given questionnaires to complete in order to collect data. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to examine the data. The findings showed a strong and positive relationship between the technical environment and the performance of SMEs, as well as between the socio-cultural environment and performance of SMEs. However, innovation was found to be important in the relationship between the socio-cultural environment and the success of SMEs, but not in the relationship between the technology environment and SME performance. Therefore, in order to foster innovation and improve the performance of SMEs in Kaduna State, policies and interventions must place a high priority on the development of a favorable socio-cultural environment and the expansion of the technological landscape

    IMPACT OF SKILL DEVELOPMENT ON EMPLOYEE CORE COMPETENCY IN DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS IN SOUTHWEST, NIGERIA

    The study examined the impact of skill development on employee core competency in deposit money banks, south west, Nigeria. This study adopts the descriptive survey research design. The population of this study consists 790 employees of the selected Deposit Money Banks in south west, Nigeria. A 5- point Likert Scale was developed and validated to collect information from the respondents. Out of two hundred and sixty-five (265) questionnaires distributed to respondents, a total of two hundred and fifty-three (253) completed and usable questionnaires were retrieved, resulting in a commendable response rate of 95.5%. The study effectively utilised a representative sample size of two hundred and fifty-three (253) individuals. The research questions were analysed using mean score and standard deviation. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the research hypotheses. The core findings from the results obtained showed that there is a significant relationship between skill development and employee core competencies in Deposit Money Banks in south west, Nigeria

    MODERATING EFFECT OF BOARD INDEPENDENCE ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DIVIDEND POLICY AND STOCK PRICES OF LISTED INSURANCE FIRMS IN NIGERIA

    The study was carried out to examine the moderating effect of board independence on the relationship between Dividend policy and stock price of listed insurance companies in Nigeria. The population of this study comprises all the listed insurance companies on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) as at 31st December, 2022, which constitutes (24) companies. Eighteen (18) companies were emerged as sample of the study after six (6) companies were filtered out based on some criteria. Data were collected from the annual reports and accounts of the sample companies for the period of the study. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation and multiple regression technique. The findings of the study revealed that Dividend yield (DY) has positive and significant impact on the stock price of listed insurance companies in Nigeria. The finding further shows that dividend per share (DPS) is negative and insignificantly related to the stock price of listed insurance companies in Nigeria. Finally, the finding shows that dividend pay-out (DPO) has negative but significant relationship with stock price of listed insurance companies in Nigeria. It was also discovered that the moderating variable board independence can only moderate the relationship between dividend yield and stock price but will not moderate the relationship between DPS and DPO with stock price of listed insurance companies in Nigeria. The study therefore, concludes that dividend policy has impact in influencing the stock price of listed insurance companies in Nigeria. It is therefore recommended that the management of the insurance companies should consider enhancing its dividend policy in improving their stock prices

    TAKAFUL INSURANCE COMPANIES’ CLAIM PAYMENT AND GROWTH OF SMEs IN NIGERIA

    The establishment of a thriving Takaful insurance subsector of the Nigerian insurance go a long way in driving entrepreneurship in the Northern Nigeria especially among the Moslems who might have reservations for the use of conventional insurance for the protection of their risks and those of their business; and also, for them to benefit from other financial intermediation accruing from the insurance industry. The non-purchase of the Takaful insurance products by these SMEs could be as a result of the non-affordability of the premiums to be paid by the SMEs owners, the fear of non-payment of claim after the insured event could have happened. The survey method was adopted in carrying out this research. This entails the use of questionnaire and interviews to triangulate and justify the impact of Takaful insurance on the development of small and medium enterprises in the country. The simple random sampling method was applied. Thus, the 487 respondents would be picked randomly from the owner/managers of SMEs who insure these Takaful insurance companies. With a coefficient of 0.318 and a low standard error (0.036), TCS has a substantial positive impact on business performance. The multiple regression results underscore the positive and significant impacts of Takaful premium affordability, claims settlement, Islamic principles, risk management consultancy support, customer service, and education and awareness initiatives on SMEs' overall performance. These findings emphasize the importance of embracing Takaful principles and services as integral elements for enhancing the financial and operational aspects of SMEs

    THE EFFECTS OF FIRE INSURANCE PREMIUM RATING ON CLAIMS SETTLEMENT AND INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO OF INSURERS IN PRE-COVID ERA: THE NIGERIA EXPERIENCE

    This study examines fire insurers in Nigeria's pre-COVID market, the study focus on their ability to accurately assess risks.setting premiums rating, investment portfolio and manage claims efficiently. Effective claims and investment management are key to maintaining the financial stability of fire insurers, particularly in high-risk markets. The research utilized secondary data from the audited financial statements of 15 licensed general insurance companies in Nigeria, covering a 20-year period (1999-2018). A purposive sampling technique was employed to select the sample, based on the researcher’s judgment. Data analysis incorporated inferential statistics, including multiple regression and fixed/random effects models, to test empirical relationships across four hypotheses. The findings revealed a strong association between insurance premium ratings and premium income, with claim settlement positively influencing premium ratings. Furthermore, the study established significant links between adequate premium rating, investment portfolios, profitability, and capital adequacy of property insurance firms in Nigeria. The study recommends enhancing data accessibility and strengthening regulatory frameworks to improve the overall performance and stability of the fire insurance sector

    ATTITUDES OF FEMALE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS TOWARDS ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION FOR SELF-RELIANCE

    The study investigates attitudes of female university Students towards entrepreneurship education in Federal University of Education, Zaria. Survey design method was used for the study. The researchers targeted 100 female undergraduate students in Federal University of Education, Zaria. The instrument used for data collection is 60 item four rating scale structured questionnaire. Simple logistic Regression (SLR) and ANOVA were used to test the null hypotheses. All the null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 (5%) level of significance. Findings revealed that through entrepreneurship education, students are likely to foster their attitudes towards entrepreneurship in Nigeria. The researchers recommended among others that tertiary institutions in north-west, Nigeria should be mandated to establish Entrepreneurship Centres. The Centres should be equipped with all the modern facilities which could enrich the students with both theoretical and practical skills.  This will help to create students with positive attitudes needed for successful business management

    ENTREPRENEURIAL EDUCATION AND JOB CREATION AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF KADUNA STATE UNIVERSITY

    The study examined entrepreneurial education and job creation among undergraduate students of Kaduna State University. Therefore, two objectives, two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated and tested. The study adopted a descriptive survey design in which questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. One hundred and fifty (150) 400 level students of Business Education in Kaduna State university in the 2024/2025 from the population of the study and all were used as sample for the study. The data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and t-test. The two research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation while the two hypotheses were tested using t-test at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that entrepreneurial education has significant influence on identification business opportunities among undergraduate students of Kaduna State University, entrepreneurial education has influence on creativity and innovation to initiate business among undergraduate students of Kaduna State University. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that business education undergraduate students of Kaduna State University have discovered skills and talents necessary for identification of relevant business opportunities and can easily develop business idea and create products and services that satisfy will the customers through the influence of entrepreneurial education. The study recommended, among others, that entrepreneurial Education in tertiary institutions should be more practically oriented rather than theory as this will exposed the students to various lucrative skills

    WORK RELATED STRESS MANAGEMENT AND THE PERFORMANCE OF WORKERS IN PUBLIC HEALTH FACILITIES IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA

    This study aimed to address the perceived high levels of stress among healthcare workers in public health facilities in Kwara State, Nigeria, and the impact this has on their performance. The study sought to evaluate the relationship between role congruence and organizational culture. The study was conducted on 2,139 healthcare workers from 46 hospitals managed by the Kwara State Hospital Management Board in Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique was used to select participants, and a sample size of 326 was calculated. Closed-ended questionnaires were used for data collection, and descriptive and inferential statistical procedures were used to analyze the data, including SEM and multiple regression analysis. SPSS version 25 and SmartPLS version 3 were used for data analysis. According to the study, 326 questionnaires were distributed to respondents and a 98% response rate was achieved. The results showed that role congruence and employee recognition had a positive effect on the performance of healthcare workers. The study recommends that healthcare managers should ensure that the roles and responsibilities of healthcare workers are clearly defined, and that employee recognition should be a regular practice in healthcare organizations. Managers should also ensure that the organizational culture is conducive for effective performance. This study adds to the existing knowledge of the relationship between work[1]related stress, employee attitude, and organizational culture on the performance of healthcare workers. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for healthcare managers, policymakers, and researchers on the importance of role congruence and employee recognition in enhancing the performance of healthcare workers in public health facilities in Kwara State, Nigeria

    THE ROLE OF ARABIC STUDIES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP SKILLS

    Arabic studies skill was found to be contributory to entrepreneurial performance and as such entrepreneurs are advised to embark on capacity building in Arabic studies skill in the area of teaching and learning and Languages practicing. Entrepreneurs are agents and drivers of development in most economies of the world including Nigeria. The entrepreneur establishes his presence through the formation of a small and medium scale enterprise (SME). Arabic studies on its part, is of great importance to the development of small and medium scale enterprises. Arguably, Arabic studies is the core academic discipline that aids the entrepreneurial drive given the popular opinion that is the language of business. The objectives of this study is to examine the role of Arabic students on entrepreneurship education for self-reliance and sustainable development in Zamfara State. The study considered the Arabic studies as profession and the major role it plays in entrepreneurship development. It is the submission of the authors that entrepreneurs with basic Arabic knowledge and entrepreneurial skills stand better chances of becoming self- reliant and attaining business success. The paper recommends among other things that government should remove those obstacles that militate against entrepreneurial development in Zamfara State

    IMPACT OF COMMERCIAL BANK LENDING RATES ON ECONOMIC GROWTH IN NIGERIA (1986 – 2020)

    This study investigated the effect of commercial bank lending rates on economic growth in Nigeria between 1989 and 2020. It specifically examined the connections between bank lending rate and Nigerian economic growth using data from various issues of the Statistical Bulletin of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Multiple regression technique was used to determine this synergy. The findings indicate that any one percent increase in credit to private sectorand commercial banking lending wouldsignificantly increase economic growth in Nigeria by 23 and 33 percent, respectively. These finding suggest that viable credit to private sector with relevant financial instruments should be encouraged to develop and provide larger credit facilities in order to improve economic growth in Nigeria
