    Get PDF
This study empirically examined the effectiveness of Open Market Operations (OMO) and Decentralized Finance (DFS,) instrument of monetary policy management in Nigeria. The investigation was carried out using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method of estimation. Unit Root and Co-integration tests were performed on all the variables and the results revealed that the variables have long-run relationships and are suitable for OLS estimation. The results indicated a significant relationship between monetary policy instruments. This implies that Open Market Operations and Decentralized Finance has been effective instrument of monetary policy management in Nigeria. The study further showed that the monetary policy rate could serve as a veritable instrument for the control of the money supply and effective monetary policy management in the economy. It is recommended, that the CBN should review periodically the performance of monetary policy to enhance the effectiveness of monetary policy instruments to achieve macroeconomic stability

Using Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Market Suleja as a case study, the study examined the prevalence, forms, and causes of crime and mob justice. The systematic sampling technique was used to select 286 traders in the market for questionnaire administration, while the purposive sampling technique was used to select the leaders of market authority and security organisations for an in-depth interview. The data obtained revealed that the physical structure of the market and ineffective security services are the major causes of various forms of crime in the market, while mob justice, occurring in various forms, is also prevalent due to not only the rise in crime but also ineffective security. It is recommended that the government should restructure the market and re-enforce the security organisations to combat crime and mob justice in the market and beyond

AFRICA’S GREAT GREEN WALL AND THE CHALLENGES OF PEACEBUILDING IN NIGERIA

    Get PDF
The Africa’s Great Green Wall (GGW) is an initiative of the African Union that aligns with other multilateral initiatives for the restoration of the green vegetation in the Sahel-Sahara region and the reduction of the impact of global warming that manifests in extreme poverty, food insecurity, forced human displacements, resource-based conflict and criminality. To be sure, the farmer-herder conflicts and other activities of terrorist organisations including the Boko Haram, Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP), Yan-Ta’adda, Yan-Bindiga occur as a result of people’s vulnerabilities due to the environmental crisis in the region. At the core of peacebuilding discourse is the contradiction that arise from the security concern over ungoverned spaces, especially because non-state armed actors such as Boko Haram, Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP), Yan-Ta’adda, and Yan-Bindiga are using forests as safe havens for training, terror financing, arms trafficking, kidnapping, and so on. Conversely, the state of insecurity has heightened the decline in livelihood in a region that is already challenged by climatic and environmental issues, while insurgents, terrorists and bandits contrived strategies for controlling access to available vegetation, land, water, and other land resources. This paper looks at the Africa’s Great Green Wall as a strategy for peacebuilding by restoring livelihood and combating terrorism. In deploying content analysis, the paper finds that while non-traditional security concerns were mainstreamed in the conception and implementation of the GGW, traditional security concerns were not adequately factored in at conception, which is evident in the implementation of the initiative. It therefore recommends that the GGW initiative is overdue for review at both national and continental levels in view of new and emerging peace and security threats associated with the region calling for the integration of not just freedom from want – security of the people, but also the freedom from fear – security of territories

Three hypotheses were formulated and tested using an independent t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The result shows significant differences in respondent's stereotyped attitudes based on gender (t(196) = -2.19, P<0.05)., but not on the level of literacy (F(3,192) =1.22, P>0.05) or ethnicity(F(3,192) = .716, P>0.05). Recommendations were made for an improvement of the image of the Police and thus attitudes towards members of the force in Makurdi

BUBBLES AND SUNSPOTS: INVESTORS’PERCEPTION OF THE NIGERIAN CAPITAL MARKET

    Get PDF
This paper examined the investors' perception of bubbles and sunspots. It attempted to find the degree of sensitivity of investors to the dual phenomenon because extrinsically determined shock (sunspot) could influence the psychology of investors through intrinsically determined shocks (bubbles). On this note, a primary research design was engaged using the report of a hundred and twenty-two (122) respondents. Data were analyzed using frequency distribution, percentages, mean, T-Test, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Our findings revealed the depth of the relationship between some demographic factors (gender, age, and educational background) and investors' sensitivity to risk and returns (outcome). The results brought to the fore and reinforced the fact that information deficit was a major factor causing investors to plunge into the short circuit opportunities of bubbles or sunspots. Recommendations were thus made to address areas of marked information gap to enable investors or potential investors to head off possible future avoidable plunges

The study examined the impact of audit quality and board diversity on the earnings management of listed deposit money banks in Nigeria. Audit quality was proxied by audit firm size, audit independence, and audit tenure while board diversity was proxied by board size, board composition, and women directors. The study employed the use of Panel multiple regression techniques to analyse the data collected from 13 listed deposit money banks in Nigeria covering the periods of 2010- 2020. The results show that audit firm size, audit independence, audit tenure, board size, board composition, and women directors all had an inverse relationship with earnings management, however, all the relationships were found to be insignificant. Based on the findings, audit quality and board diversity has no impact on earnings management. The study, therefore, recommends amongst others that listed deposit money banks should always make use of Big4 audit firms in their auditing activities

    Get PDF
The operational capability of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) became hampered over the years due to budget constraints to induct and maintain its platforms. This made indigenous research and development (R&D) imperative to support NAF operations. The study sought to highlight the factors that were determinants of effective R&D activities in Nigeria. The research methodology was qualitative and the method adopted an ex post facto design using content analysis to review secondary data. The theoretical framework was anchored on the realist theory. The study found that cultural paradigm, education policy, leadership, acquisition policy and reverse engineering programme were germane to effective R&D for the indigenous development of military hardware to support NAF operations in Nigeria. The recommended policy actions for the NAF included pursuing deliberate policy on the training of specialists in reverse engineering as well as establishing a reverse engineering workshop

    Get PDF
Women leadership in politics, as a part of gender mainstreaming and equality, has been an ongoing struggle in Nigeria for decades, leading to Nigeria’s Fourth Republic witnessing an increase in the number of women who vie for elective positions. Hinged on the Theory of Structural Violence, this paper employs the conduct of interviews to obtain insight into the factors responsible for this increase. The paper builds up from the pre-colonial era, providing a historical perspective of the involvement of women in leadership and its metamorphosis over various eras. Genuine interest to serve; lack of development and basic amenities in areas; personal interest to ameliorate the plight of women; and prebendalism are some of the factors noted to have encouraged women's participation in politics. The paper concludes that encouraging more women involved in politics and funds provided for effective female candidates' campaigns will help more women attain elective positions in Nigeria

BOOK REVIEW: The Root Cause of Farmers-Herders Crisis in North Central Nigeria

    No full text
The main purpose of this book as Suchi & Musa explained is to unravel the root cause of the crisis between farmers and herders in North Central Nigeria (p. 2). Though the farmers-herders crisis as opined by the authors is an age-old phenomenon that is rampant in African societies its frequency in North Central Nigeria has persisted and taken a violent dimension (p. 1). The crisis has become widespread with recorded incidences across the six geo-political zones of the country (p. 3). The North Central zone is particularly hit by increasing herders' attacks on farming communities which has culminated in a crisis with adverse consequences for the security of the region (p. 3). This has led to the destruction of lives, property, and human displacement (p. 1)
