DEBT BURDEN AND THE UNDERDEVELOPMENT OF THIRD WORLD NATIONS: THE NIGERIAN EXPERIENCE
The activities of colonialism, neocolonialism, the current subtle penetration of fiscal neoliberalism, and the debt burden ravaging the economies of Third World countries and Nigeria as a case in point, leave much to be desired. In light of this, the paper sought to establish the link between the Third World debt burden and underdevelopment to make findings and come up with recommendations that can bring the countries out of underdevelopment. Therefore, the paper is intended to be used to solve the problem of underdevelopment by tracing its source within a defined scope of reference. And that is why the paper posits that the debt burden and underdevelopment of Less Developed Countries (LDCs) and Nigeria as a case in point, is a result of the unpredictable global economic conditions of 1968-the 70s, oil prices in 1973-74 and 1979-1980, the high-interest rate in 1980-82, declining export prices and volume associated with the global recession, problems of domestic economic management etcetera. Additionally, the review of some articles, works of literature, a thorough analysis and application of dependency theory, and the specific debt amounts of Nigeria’s current public debt figures of $64b as of 2019 justify the purported negative intentions of Bretton Wood institutions and other loan clubs with the Third World. Further findings showed (in a descriptive manner) that the loans caused the bilateral and multilateral balance of trade/payment deficits. Unfortunately, income disparities made the debt burden and underdevelopment of LDCs inevitable. The paper recommends an internal/external equitable economic solution, debt reduction, forgiveness, and possibly repudiation which it is hoped will spur the Third World especially Nigeria to an alternative cause of action and put her back on the path of development
DEMOCRACY AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA’S FEDERAL SETTING
Democracy and development are two mutually inclusive concepts in the political science discipline. Both concepts emphasized individual decisions aimed at enhancing his living standards. The current democratic dispensation that started in 1999 in Nigeria suggested there would be instant outright development, but Nigeria is still lagging among the committee of democratic nations in terms of development. The paper relied on the documentary study and collected data from secondary documents such as textbooks, journals, Newspapers, and online resources. The data collected were analyzed descriptively to realize the objectives of the paper. The paper revealed that; despite Nigeria’s oil wealth and huge potential in all sectors, there is abundant evidence of the presence of endemic poverty in Nigeria. It is recommended that to achieve federal democracy and economic prosperity political leaders and followers should have a national consensus in pursuit of a devolved federal system and democratic practice

CONSOLIDATING THE GAINS OF INTELLIGENCE IN COMBATING TERRORISM FOR ENHANCED NATIONAL SECURITY IN NIGERIA: KUJE CORRECTIONAL FACILITY ATTACK IN PERSPECTIVE
This paper examined the gains of intelligence gathering in combating terrorism for enhanced national security in Nigeria, especially the recent attack on the Kuje Correctional Facility in Abuja. The paper adopted an Expost-facto research design and made use of secondary sources of data while the Social Identity Theory was employed as the explicatory framework. The paper posited that the reasons behind the attack is due to inadequate staff and the fact that the Nigerian correctional system is deficient in the deployment of prison intelligence and dynamic security strategies that are supposed to conform with global practices. The paper thus recommended, among others, that there should be an urgent deployment of modern security gadgets and support across the Correctional facilities in Nigeria because Intelligence support can be a valuable tool to assist law enforcement agencies in the performance of their daily duties
AGRICULTURE AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN NIGERIA
The study examined the impact of agricultural output on economic growth in Nigeria. GDP being the dependent variable was used as a proxy for economic growth while crop, livestock, forestry, and fishery were the independent variables. Annual times series data of the variables covering the period between 1986-2020 were sourced from CBN and National Bureau for Statistics. The study carried out pre[1]diagnostic tests including the Unit root test to test the stationarity of the data and the cointegration test to confirm the long-run relationship between variables. Error correction model (ECM) was used in the data analysis. Findings from the study revealed that there exists a long-run relationship between the variables. The results of the error correction model (ECM) revealed that the coefficient of livestock and fishery production were both positive with values of 5.0526 and 67.26 respectively and significant at a 5% level with the p-value 0.0432 and 0.0292. Crop production and forestry had a negative and insignificant impact on Nigeria's economic growth with the coefficient of -4.593964, and -2.625762 and p-value of 0.6432, and 0.6432, respectively. The study, therefore, recommended that the Nigerian government should review its policies on forestry and crop production so that they can have an impact on Nigeria's economic growth, and encourage more production of livestock and fisheries to have more input., Government should establish and fund more research institutes to improve seedlings to increase the productivity of crops
MANAGING THE CHALLENGES OF SUCCESSION PLANNING IN FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESSES IN NIGERIA
The alarming rate of the failure of Family-owned Businesses (FOBs) in Nigeria after the demise of the founders has been attracting the attention of scholars, administrators and management gurus for some time. This paper studies the challenges FOBs face in transiting from one generation to another. The study argues that despite the problem of the skills to run the inherited estate by the offspring of the departed founder, there are other fundamental impediments worth attention. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to open new ground for researchers to study the failure of FOBs to transit from one generation to another in Nigeria from a different angle. This study identifies the reasons for the problem of succession within FOBs to lie in the culture, religion and the laws of the land. The study concludes that one way of avoiding the intractable failures of FOBs is to adopt modern methods of inheriting a business through the same cultural, religious and legal tenets. This is a radical departure from other scholarly articles that have been emphasizing offspring skills, lack of synergy and management capabilities. The argument is that successful succession planning requires the modification of our inheritance system from the traditional to the modern one
BOOK REVIEW: Labour Unionism, Leadership and Development in Nigeria
The book presents a comprehensive explanation of leadership and labour unions in the advancement of society, two contentious issues in Nigerian politics and social development. The work emphasises the essential role that labour unions play(ed) in the development process that the state has repeatedly failed to see in postcolonial Nigeria. Trade Unionism, Leadership and Development in Nigeria see trade unions as reform agents, genuine partners in development, as well as recalcitrant, because of their activities that are often disruptive of the system. It is an exhaustive study that covers virtually everything that is of significance in the emergency of the Nigerian nation and labour movement/industrial relations. It addresses the challenges of leadership, collaboration, and politics in Labour Unionism, both to the workers' welfare and the stability of the nation’s political system
POST-COLONIAL NIGERIA AND ECONOMIC DEPENDENCY: ISSUES, STRATEGIES AND THE WAY FORWARD
The dependence of the Nigerian state on the core countries, especially the Western capitalist economies is the main cause of its perpetual underdevelopment. The role of the Nigerian elites is very negative, thereby aggravating Nigerian dependency while contributing to the development of core capitalist countries. It is against this background that this paper raises various issues in e Nigerian society that perpetuate dependency and underdevelopment. The work is carried out with the use of data obtained from secondary sources. Findings revealed that Post- colonial Nigerian economy is characterized by dependence irrespective of her political independence since 1960. The implication of this is that since the nation is economically dependent, every other sector is also dependent. This is contrary to the advocate for self-reliance and separation from the exploiters and exploitation. The paper is therefore of the opinion that Nigeria cannot achieve successful self-reliance and true independence with the present approach of misguided policies of the capitalist exploitation. The import/export substitution and diversification of the economy to serve as transformation strategies are therefore recommended as the way out of dependency in Nigeria
YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN DEMOCRATIZATION AND GOVERNANCE PROCESSES IN NIGERIA’S FOURTH REPUBLIC: CHALLENGES AND PROSPECT
This study examines the challenges and Prospects of Youth Participation in the Democratization and Governance Processes in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. Using secondary sources and Liberal democratic theory as a framework of analysis. It has been discovered that despite various international communiqués to ensure increased participation of the vulnerable segments of the society in their national political process, Nigeria is still ranked among those countries with low Youth Participation as a result of corruption, monetization of Nigerian politics, the incessant discrediting of the youth by the elders. The finding also reveals youth have been used as political thugs in the electoral process by the political class. The study concludes youth participation in democracy and governance is critical but largely depends on the quality of the population of the youth. The study recommends that government should be coupled with a commitment to building long-term civic institutions that give youth a means of engaging political systems and actors beyond Elections
