MEASURING INSTRUMENTS OF CRIME INVESTIGATION IN MILITARY INTELLIGENT
Globally, the instruments for measuring crime are important in military intelligence, but it is frequently overlooked by criminologists. This slight is unfortunate since accurate crime data are needed to adequately test theories of offending and victimization as well as to assess the effectiveness of public policies. Intelligence as a concept has meant many different things to people. It conjures up pictures of clandestine, high technology, and risk-taking to gather sensitive information about crimes and criminals. Military intelligence is the end product of an analytic place which collects and assesses information ab out crimes and/or criminal enterprises to make judgements and inferences about community conditions, potential problems, and criminal activity with the intent to pursue criminal prosecution or project crime trends. The paper discusses the concepts of military intelligence, stages of military intelligence, indicators of measuring military intelligence, and instruments used in measuring military intelligence with conclusions and suggestions
AN ASSESSMENT OF THE LEVEL OF ADOPTION OF CRYPTOCURRENCIES AMONG STUDENTS OF TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS OF SABON GARI AND ZARIA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS OF KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA
Cryptocurrencies have been debated to be the likely currencies of transactions in the future. Evidence abounds on the rate of daily trading in these currencies, especially in developing countries such as Nigeria. Reports have indicated that Nigeria is among the top countries where cryptocurrencies are traded especially among the youth. However, little evidence exists on the level of awareness and adoption of cryptocurrencies among students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This study attempts to investigate the levels of awareness and adoption of cryptocurrencies among students of tertiary institutions in Sabon Gari and Zaria Local Government Areas of Kaduna State. Primary data were collected using an online structured questionnaire from 242 students, randomly selected in the two local government areas and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings indicate a considerable level of awareness of cryptocurrencies amongst students of Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education as 98 per cent expressed that they are aware of bitcoins, as the most popular form of cryptocurrency in the study area. However, low levels of adoption in the overall sample were found. The study thus concludes that although a lot of youths especially in Kaduna State are aware of the existence of cryptocurrencies, only a few have adopted or are engaged in trading in such digital currencies. The study then recommends further studies into uncovering the factors that hinder the adoption of cryptocurrencies and also advocates for the organization of awareness seminars to further enlighten students on the various forms of cryptocurrencies and also their relative importance in the 21st century
INTERNET ADDICTION AS A PREDICTOR OF DEPRESSION AND LONELINESS AMONG UNDERGRADUATES
The extent to which internet addiction influences depression and loneliness among university undergraduates was examined in this study. Simple random sampling was used to draw three hundred and sixty-six out of four thousand, four hundred and nine undergraduates from the federal University Gashua. The sample comprised 214 males and 152 females in the age range of 18-45 (????̅= 26.64; SD = 5.643). Data was collected using the Young (1999) Internet Addiction Test; Beck's (1961) Depression Scale and the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale (1980). Simple linear regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses. Results show that internet addiction significantly and negatively predicted emotional well-being among university undergraduates [F(1,364) = 14.39; P<.01]. This implies that as the level of internet addiction increases, psychological well-being decreases significantly. Results also show that internet addiction significantly predicted loneliness among university undergraduates [F(1,364) = 19.134; P><.01]. This implies that as internet addiction increases, loneliness gets heightened. The outcome of this has implications for educators, parents, > and the government to act fast and discourage internet addiction among undergraduates
SECURITY ARCHITECTURE, INTERNAL POLICING, AND AGITATIONS FOR STATE POLICE
The Nigerian security environment is uniquely marked by notable threats with diverse implications for peace order and stability. Old and emerging threats have steadily risen in an epic proportion. In all the regions of the country, insecurity has skyrocketed in an unprecedented proportion. The Nigerian security architecture appears overwhelmed and incapable of securing the country in the face of these daunting security threats, it begs the question: can the security architecture neutralize the myriad of threats the country suffers? The paper seemingly looked at the current dynamics of the Nigerian security architecture, internal policing and its inherent fault lines, and the call for state police. The paper adopted the qualitative method, content, and thematic analysis. Ultimately, the paper found out that there are numerous security challenges across Nigeria with old and emerging threats assuming an existential dimension. Also, the internal police mechanism has sadly proved inadequate to contain these threats. Consequently, there have been agitations for state police that will complement the operational capabilities of the existing security architecture. The paper recommended that state police could provide an invigorated dynamism, logistics, and manpower to the current security outfit
THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT OF COVID ON WOMEN AND GIRLS: A STUDY OF LAGOS AND ABUJA
This study focuses on identifying evidence on the secondary impacts of COVID-19 on women and girls in Nigeria. The questionnaires were administered to female respondents between the ages of 16 and above in the cities of Lagos and Abuja, Nigeria in November 2020. Factors assessed include social determinants and secondary impacts of the pandemic and Reproductive Health (SRH), girls’ and women’s rights, harmful social norms, leadership, and empowerment. 42% of respondents who were below the age of 25, 31% reported being offered sex for benefits via social networking platforms during the lockdown and they were willing to sell sex in other to survive, while 6% reported rape cases. Of the 53% who retained their job during the lockdown, 24% of them reported intimate partner violence because their partner was not working. Government and relevant agencies must consider the gendered nature of the impact of COVID-19 when designing palliatives
INTERROGATING NIGERIAN MEDIA HANDLING OF INSURGENCY IN THE NORTHEAST OF NIGERIA BETWEEN 2009 AND 2018
The ubiquity and utility of both traditional and new media have been celebrated in literature. Scholars have argued that media’s globalising effects make users prone to an avalanche of messages that are both beneficial and counter-productive. The objective of this paper is to further intellectual engagement on the functional and dysfunctional media usage in building peace in conflict situations. Therefore, this paper examines the effect of the media on the escalation and de-escalation of insurgency in Nigeria from 1999 to date. Qualitative content analysis of print media messages on the Boko Haram insurgency was complemented with interviews with twenty media consumers to present a situation analysis of the nexus between media reports and security or/and insecurity as indexes of peace-building. Findings revealed that although the media have enhanced awareness of the conflicts and the strategies being employed by governments in the conflict hotspots, however, it was also revealed that the media are susceptible to manipulation by the non-state actors to create fear and whittle down governments’ interventions thus triggering hopelessness and anger among the populace. The paper concludes that although the media are beneficial, problems still exist in the utilization of media for the communication of counter-insurgency efforts as their uses are sometimes counter-productive to peace-building. Knowledge-driven capacity building for the people is needed in order to develop the required skills to discern and scrutinize media messages as a conflict[1]sensitivity imperative
INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSES TO THE IMPACT OF GLOBAL CLIMATE CHALLENGES ON AFRICA: THE CASE OF NIGERIA SECURITY AND CIVIL DEFENCE CORPS
Recently, Africans have been experiencing serious climate conditions such as fluctuating rainfall, temperature rise, increase in sea level and flooding, desertification, drought, land degradation, more recurrent extreme weather condition, affected freshwater resources, and loss of biodiversity. These conditions have led to seasons of drought and excess flood, which affected the health of the people, and agricultural activities and caused a loss of shelter, especially in Nigeria. This means that the role of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) cannot be ignored in responding to the climate challenges in Nigeria. Therefore, this paper presents the conceptual framework, sources of climate change, consequences of climate change, climate change policy in Nigeria, and the response of NSCDC to the climate challenges in Nigeria. It concludes that Africa has to adapt to the effects of climate change and mitigate the negative impact of climate change at the national and individual levels. It, therefore, recommends among others that, the government at all levels should collaborate with stakeholders in the relevant ministries/agencies to ensure that policies are revised and implemented based on current environmental needs and challenges
CONFLICT MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES AND STAFF PERFORMANCE AT BENUE STATE UNIVERSITY, MAKURDI, NIGERIA
This study examined the relationship between conflict management strategies and staff performance at Benue State University, Makurdi. A survey research design was used on a sample of 331 respondents. Primary data through a structured questionnaire was used. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression statistical tools were employed to analyse the collected data. Findings from the study revealed that integrating, obliging, dominating and avoiding strategies jointly explained 68.8% of the variation in the performance of the staff. Particularly, the study also found that dominating strategy has a negative relationship with staff performance in the university, while integrating, obliging, and avoiding strategies have a positive influence on the performance of staff at the university. The study, therefore, e recommended that the Management of the University should emphasize the adoption of an integrating strategy, an obliging strategy and an avoiding strategy in the management of critical issues such as employees’ welfare
NIGERIA’S NATIONAL ASSEMBLY AND THE NEGLECT OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN THE FOURTH REPUBLIC
This paper examines the National Assembly’s interface with the environment in Nigeria. It asked why the environment is not a first-line oversight function for the parliament in Nigeria. It discovers that there is a deafening silence on the environment from Nigeria’s legislature that has enthroned either ineffective legislations or lacklustre environmental regulatory regimes—a trend that has made parliamentary oversight functions cluster majorly on select areas such as human rights, terrorism, etc, to the detriment of the environment. It, therefore, insists on parliamentary oversight of the environment in order to enthrone environmental sustainability in the exploitation of natural resources in Nigeria. The paper relied on descriptive methods. It recommends the need to enact public interest-spirited legislation such as making environmental procedural rights legislations as against environmental substantive rights legislations; with an overall intention to enthrone an environment-friendly constitution in Nigeria
STUDENTS’ BEHAVIOURAL INTENTION TOWARDS ADOPTING WHATSAPP AS A SOURCE OF NEWS
Sharing news on social media has socio-economic importance but theoretical knowledge of the factors that influence the adoption of WhatsApp as a source of news is lacking in the literature, while past studies have concentrated on learning and socialisation. Relying on research evidence that students are active users of WhatsApp for different purposes; this study used the Technology Adoption Model (TAM) to focus on user acceptance of WhatsApp to explain the relationships between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and behavioural intention of students towards adopting WhatsApp as a source of news. Data was collected from 364 respondents in one of Malaysia’s five research universities using a self-administered and online survey questionnaire. Over half of the respondents accessed WhatsApp for about an hour daily, thus forming a significant part of their lives. Spearman rho correlation analyses confirmed theoretical assumptions in the TAM with evidence of the moderate positive correlation between perceived usefulness and behaviour intention; a weak positive correlation between perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use; and a moderate positive correlation between perceived ease of use and behavioural intention to adopt WhatsApp as a source of news. Hence, the study highlights that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use have more significant and positive relationships with behavioural intention in determining the use of WhatsApp as a source of news within the theoretical assumptions of the TAM. Additionally, despite the spread of fake news through WhatsApp and other social media, students still find news on WhatsApp reliable and were willing to trust and use it as a source of news in the future. These findings can inspire further studies on ‘fake news’ to investigate the extent to which people believe the news received through WhatsApp, and how such news is fact-checked and consumed
