    Caffeine Associated with Exercise Actions on Glycemic Metabolism and Insulin Resistance in Diabetic Animals

    Objective: evaluate glycemic metabolism and its relationship with insulin resistance in diabetic animals after caffeine consumption associated with exercise.Material and Methods: 48 animals, of 60 days, divided in four groups: Control, Diabetic, Control+Exercise, Diabetes+Exercise, Caffeine, Diabetes+Caffeine, Exercise+Caffeine and Diabetes+Caffeine+Exercise. Diabetes model was induced by intraperitoneal administration of 120 mg/kg of alloxan. On the test day, 6 mg/kg of caffeine were administrated 30 minutes before exercise and the animals performed a 60 minutes’ session of predominantly aerobic exercise, using an overload of 6% of their body’s weight. With 90 days old, the animals were submitted to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) to verify their glycemic curve. During thirty days of aerobic exercise and/or caffeine treatment, the animals had their glycemia evaluated. At the end of the period, the OGTT was re-evaluated. So, the animals were sacrificed for biochemical analysis (glucose, muscle glycogen and hepatic) and hormonal (insulin).     Impacts of Downtown Developments to Facilitate Environmental Sustainability and Presence of Core and Frame: A Case Study of Saddar, Karachi, Pakistan

    A real sustainable world and a livable environment for everyone is currently needed and becoming an extraordinarily challenging task. Sustainability for whom-who benefits and who loses? The increasing environmental problems are also hampering the sustainability. The remarkable increase in population and severe food shortages has brought unprecedented burden on land.Land is considered as space, territory, location, ecosystem, reserve and human habitat above all. Land-use provides a basis for identification of different functional zones in the city thus providing a framework for shaping the internal structure of a city. The best-planned development of any area is possible when the problems of that area are well understood, well documented and closely monitored. Systematic information on land-use / land cover classes, environmental problems and the available arrangement is critically important for future planning of an area.The rationale of this study is to indicate the presence of core and frame in the downtown area of Saddar, Karachi and to examine how finished downtown developments are designed to facilitate environmental sustainability. The field inventory has been conducted to find out the functional and physical developments and sustainability of the study area. In addition the process models have been applied to find out the environmental sustainability. The results of filed investigations show that Saddar does not fulfill the requirement of any of the classical land use models. With reference to the planned development of the core area, zoning laws should be applied to place the functions properly to their respective location. The main problems should be considered as prime matters for the city planners and agencies

    Analgesic and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Phaseolus vulgaris L. Fixed Oil in Rodents

    The seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris are known as common beans or kidney beans. The dry seeds are eaten as pulse and are enriched with protein, fiber, starch, B vitamins (B1, B6, B9), iron, potassium and selenium. Beans also contain about 1-2 % of fixed oil. Phaseolus vulgaris is linked with anticancer, antihyperlipidemic, hypoglycemic and antioxidant actions. The fixed oil of Phaseolus vulgaris (PVFO) seeds is extracted with hexane and used in this study to assess acute oral toxicity, analgesic (by acetic acid induced writhing, hot plate and tail flick tests in mice) and anti-inflammatory (by carrageenan induced paw edema in rats) actions. Four groups were made (n=6): Group-I: Normal Saline Control (2ml/kg), Group-II: PVFO (2ml/kg), Group-III: PVFO (4ml/kg) and Group-IV: Standard Acetyl salicylic acid (ASA 300 mg/kg). PVFO in 2ml/kg and 4ml/kg dose demonstrated analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities but in hot plate results were unreliable as here significant activity started after 90 minutes. For toxicity test 5ml/kg dose was administered orally in mice and no toxicity symptoms were observed. It is therefore concluded that PVFO is safe for oral use up to 5ml/kg and may possess analgesic and anti-inflammatory actions

    Bioequivalence Study of Two Commercial Products of 3mg Dinoprostone Vaginal Tablets

    A randomized, parallel, active control, in vivo bioequivalence study (with clinical endpoint) determining the bioequivalence of two brands of dinoprostone 3 mg vaginal tablets was conducted in pregnant women at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center, Karachi. 3mg Dinoprostone vaginal tablet was administered with a second dose repeated after six hours if clinically prescribed. The bioequivalence was assessed by clinical endpoints and a safety analysis was also conducted for all dosed subjects. Maternal bishop score, CTG and neonatal APGAR score were noted. 90% Confidence Intervals for per protocol population was found well within the ±0.20 range. Test product (Glandin E2) and reference product (prostin E2) were found to be bioequivalent

    Calcium Intakes in the Diet of Eastern Morocco’s Population

    Purpose: Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease in the world. Most epidemiological studies show that calcium and vitamin deficiencies are very frequent not only in the elderly population but also in the general adult population. The aim of our work was to evaluate the calcium intake in population of eastern Morocco by the translated version in Moroccan Arabic dialect of Fardellone questionnaire.Methods: The version translated into Arabic dialect Fardellone questionnaire was tested on a sample of 1000 subjects. The age distribution was calculated on the distribution of the general Moroccan population according to the most recent population and housing census of September 2014. Therefore, subjects younger than 15 years represented the first age group, the subjects aged 16 to 59 years represented the second age group and the subjects older than 60 years represented by the third age group.Results: The study population included 56% women (n = 560), 44% of men (n = 440). The subjects aged less than 15 years accounted for 11% (n = 110), those aged 15 to 59 73.1% (n = 731) and those aged over 60 years 15.9% (n = 159). The mean calcium intake was respectively 4907 mg by week (that means 701 mg/day). The assessment of calcium intake by age group showed a deficiency in all three groups. The average consumption of calcium per day was significantly lower than the recommended daily amount for the three age groups. Patients aged over 60 years is the age group most under nourished calcium. The comparison of both gender found a deficit higher among women than among men.Conclusion: Evaluation of the calcium intake is an essential tool for better management of metabolic bone diseases

    Traditional Uses, Phytochemical and Pharmacological Properties of Dovyalis caffra

    Dovyalis caffra is a valuable indigenous African fruit tree widely cultivated throughout the world. The species is also traditionally used as herbal medicine to treat and manage human and animal diseases. This study reviewed ethnobotanical uses, phytochemical and pharmacological properties of D. caffra. Relevant information on the uses, phytochemistry and pharmacological properties of D. caffra was collected from electronic scienti?c databases such as ScienceDirect, SciFinder, PubMed, Google Scholar, Medline, and SCOPUS. Pre-electronic literature search of conference papers, scientific articles, books, book chapters, dissertations and theses were carried out at the University library. Literature search revealed that D. caffra is used as herbal medicine for amenorrhoea, heart pains, malaria, pain, wounds and as ethnoveterinary medicine. Phytochemical compounds identified from the species include alkaloids, amino acids, fatty acids, flavonoids, hydoxybenzioic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, hydroxyhydrocinnamic acid, hydroxyphenylacetic acids, organic acids, phenolics, steroids, terpenoids and volatile compounds. Pharmacological studies revealed that D. caffra extracts and compounds have antimicrobial, antioxidant, antischistosomal, nematicidal and cytotoxicity activities. There is need for detailed scientific investigations aimed at elucidating the chemical, nutritional and toxicological properties of D. caffra

    Croton mubango Müll. Arg.: Its Botany, Ethnomedicinal Uses and Pharmacological Properties

    Croton mubango is widely used as traditional medicine in tropical Africa. The potential of C. mubango as traditional medicine, its botany, chemical and pharmacological activities are reviewed. The literature relevant to the study was obtained from scientific databases such as BioMed Central (BMC), Web of Science, Google Scholar, Scopus, Science Direct, PubMed, Springerlink and Scielo. Other supplementary literature such as books, book chapters, theses, conference papers and other scientific publications were obtained from the University of Fort Hare Library and dissertation search engines such as EThOS, OATD, ProQuest and Open-thesis. Literature search revealed that the bark, fruits, leaves and roots of C. mubango are commonly used as traditional medicines for abdominal pain, diarrhoea, dysentery, fever, hernia, intestinal worms, malaria, rheumatism, toothache, tuberculosis and as purgative. Phytochemical compounds isolated from C. mubango include alkaloids, flavonoids, reducing sugars, saponins, steroids, tannins, terpenes and triterpenes. Pharmacological studies on C. mubango indicate that the species has in vitro and in vivo antiplasmodial activities. Several medicinal applications and therapeutic potentials of C. mubango have been demonstrated in this study although the majority of them still need pharmacological validation

    A Review of Phytochemistry and Pharmacological Properties of Threatened Croton Species Used as Herbal Medicines in East Africa

    Some rare and threatened Croton species have a long history of medicinal usage in East Africa. The objective of this study was to review the phytochemistry and pharmacological properties of five Croton species that are threatened with extinction in East Africa but widely used as herbal medicines in the region. Information on medicinal uses, phytochemistry and pharmacological properties of C. alienus, C. dictyophlebodes, C. jatrophoides, C. megalocarpoides and C. talaeporos was obtained from databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, Google Scholar, PubMed, BioMed Central (BMC), Springerlink and Scielo. Other sources of information included scientific publications, conference proceedings, theses, books and book chapters obtained from libraries. Literature search revealed that the bark, fruits, leaves and roots of these five Croton species are commonly used as traditional medicines for gastro-intestinal disorders, colds and influenza, body pains and weaknesses and intestinal worms. Phytochemical compounds isolated from these species include alkaloids, anthraquinones, diterpenoids, esters, flavonoids, furanoditerpenoids, limonoids, methylcyclohexanes, phenolics, steroids, tannins and triterpenoids. Pharmacological studies indicate that these species have antifungal, anti-leishmanial and insect antifeedant activities. Preliminary phytochemical and pharmacological research done so far on Croton species is promising, but too general to corroborate some of the medicinal uses of the species

    Effects of Buchholzia coriacea Seed on Nutrient Utilization and Serum Biochemical Parameters in Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Rat

    The effects of Buchholzia coriacea seed on the nutrient utilization and biochemical parameters in alloxan-induced diabetic rat were evaluated. Buchholzia coriacea (BC) seed was washed, sliced, dried, pulverized and mixed with standard ration at 2.5%, 5%, 10% and 20%. The proximate nutrient composition of the standard and prepared rations was determined. The Buchholzia coriacea incorporated rations and standard ration were fed to alloxan-induced diabetic rats for 70 consecutive days. The nutrient utilization and biochemical parameters as well as the histopathology of pancreas of the treated rats were evaluated. The Buchholzia coriacea at 2.5% inclusion rate significantly (p < 0.05) improved the nutrient utilization and biochemical parameters that were compromised in diabetic rats fed with standard ration alone. The B. coriacea also reversed the pancreatic islet damage induced by alloxan. Buchholzia coriacea have potent antidiabetic and hypolipidemic activities and should not be incorporation in excess of 5% in the diet
