This study investigated creating awareness; curriculum modification and training as instruments for combating the challenges of climate change in Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 3 universities in 3 Southwestern states. 240 from the 646 Lecturers from the faculty of Science in the selected universities were sampled for the study. Awareness, Curriculum Modification and Training Questionnaire (ACMTQ) was used and validated, and the reliability coefficient was 0.82. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the research questions. The grand means of 3.43, 3.51 and 3.45 showed that the respondents agreed that creation of awareness, curriculum modification and training had an influence on the challenges of climate change to a high extent. It was recommended that more awareness should be created, even to the grassroots, through the launching of various enlightenment campaign programmes. Also, community members should be trained and re-trained on the negative effect of deforestation, the importance of tree planting, ways of controlling floods, erosion and how to open blocked drainages

This study analysed the spatial distribution of public secondary schools in Ikeduru Local Government Area (LGA) of Owerri Senatorial Zone, Imo State and also examined the level of accessibility of students to public secondary schools in their domiciles. Two research questions were raised to guide this study. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The target population comprised all the 13 public secondary schools in Ikeduru LGA. The sample for the study comprised the 13 public secondary schools purposively selected. The schools were stratified using the stratified sampling technique. 10% of 4,969 students gave 497students as the sample size using the simple random sampling techniques. The instruments designed to collect the primary and secondary data comprised two checklists, namely, School Location Checklist (SLC) and Accessibility of School Network Checklist (ASNC). The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics. The Geo-statistical analysis was conducted using the ArcGIS for the production of the maps of the study area. The findings revealed, among others that the pattern of distribution of the public secondary schools showed clustered, lopsided and uneven spatial distributions of schools. It was, therefore, recommended among others that, school mapping strategies should be adopted to create database in order to ensure that schools were located in close proximity to students’ homes with respect to population density and catchment area of the students

The study investigated work stress among secondary school teachers in Ikorodu, Lagos State. To guide the study, three research questions were raised. One was answered and two were hypothesized and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised nine hundred and fourteen (914) Senior Secondary School teachers in both government and private schools in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria. The sample size of the study comprised 229 Senior Secondary School teachers, representing 25% of the total population of the Senior Secondary School teachers in Ikorodu, Lagos State. The simple random technique was adopted to select the respondents. The instrument for data collection for this study was a structured questionnaire. The internal consistency reliability of the instruments was conducted using 20 teachers who were not part of the actual study. The data obtained were analysed using Cronbach Alpha Statistics, and a reliability co-efficient of 0.73 was obtained. The instrument was administered to the respondents and the data collected were analysed using mean (x) and standard deviation (SD) statistical tool to answer the research question. The decision rule was based on any calculated mean (x) equal or greater than 2.50 which was regarded as highly stressed while values within the range of 1.50 – 2.49 were regarded as stressed, 0.50 – 1.49 were regarded as slightly stressed and 0.49 and below were regarded as not stressed.  The hypotheses were tested using the t-test statistics. The study revealed that stress existed at a high level among Senior Secondary School teachers in Ikorodu Area of Lagos State. There was a significant difference in the level of work stress between male and female teachers in secondary schools in Ikorodu, Lagos State, with female teachers being more stressed. There was no significant difference in the level of work stress between private and public secondary school teachers in Ikorodu, Lagos State. It was recommended that appropriate workload levels should be established for teachers to enable them to perform optimally

    Get PDF
This paper examines the nature and performance of the festival: Ukpe-kpahe. Ukpe-kpahe is a masquerade festival which is celebrated annually by the people of Ikao in Edo State, Nigeria. This study shows that Ukpe-kpahe can become drama if it is well harnessed. The festival can be modified to become drama with all the necessary dramatic elements, although it entails ritual propitiation, Ukpe-kpahe entertains the people because it is more of a reenactment. While contrasting western drama and performance with local content and presentation, audience and performers are not usually separated in African drama because of the communality of the materials used for the entertainment. Ukpe-kpahe has all the dramatic elements such as dance, costumes, songs and lyrics that qualify it as drama. The study also examines the performance mode of Ukpe-kpahe. To achieve this, a historical research was conducted. Data were sourced from both primary and secondary sources. The study concludes that the festival is a form of African drama

An Appraisal of Utilization of Local Government Funds in Edo State, Nigeria: 2006 To 2017

It is believed that the only reasonable form of development is that which comes from within, the sustainable development that comes through the will and desires of the people. The idea behind the creation of Local Governments in Nigeria is that the people at the local level will have the fullest awareness of their needs.  Every local jurisdiction has its unique economic, social and physical characteristics and its historical tradition which are better understood by its people.  Thus, the Local Government Areas are created to provide the services which the Federal and State Governments cannot easily undertake due to their remoteness from the local communities. This paper appraised the utilization of Local Government Funds in the Nigerian Local Governments with focus on Edo State. The study suggested feasible and pragmatic ways to maximize internal revenue generation in the local governments. It observed that prior to the 1976 Local Government Reforms; most local governments were able to maximize their internal revenue generation and thus discharged their primary responsibilities with little or no financial assistance from the higher tier governments. However, with the introduction of statutory allocations to the local governments following the 1976 Reforms, most of the local governments abandoned the hitherto viable internal revenue sources in preference to the revenue from the statutory allocation. This unwholesome attitude of most local governments, among other things was identified as the bane of internal revenue generation at this level of government. The paper concluded that unless the local governments looked inwards to maximize their internal revenue sources, they would not be financially self-reliant. The implication of this is that they cannot enjoy a reasonable degree of autonomy as a third tier of government if they continue to be heavily dependent on the financial assistance from both the federal and the state governments to function effectively. This is because, as the saying goes, “he who pays the piper dictates the tune.

Teaching Staff Attrition is an essential indicator of inefficiency in the educational system, and the patterns it takes among the generations of Universities may make achievement of policy objectives for establishing some universities difficult. This paper discusses the teaching staff attrition among the generations of universities in South West Nigerian Universities. Data were collected from the multi-stage sampled population and analyzed using attrition rate (rate statistic). The situational analysis of teaching staff attrition was looked at from the academic discipline and staff ranks. Teaching staff attrition is an important educational planning indicator in the area of preventing brain drain syndrome that will make the educational system inefficient. It was therefore recommended that recruitment and retention strategies that would enhance realization of policy aim for establishing universities should be enforced, while academic disciplines and teaching staff ranks biased policy must be put in place to check teaching staff attrition
