This study investigated the attitude of library customers to the use of information resources in Nasarawa State University Library. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researchers sought to find out the kind of attitude exhibited by library customers to the use of information resources, identify varieties of information resources available for use, the strategies used by staff in informing library customers on the availability of information resources and challenges encountered in the use of information resources in Nasarawa State University Library. The survey research method was adopted for the study while structured questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The staff and customers of Nasarawa State University Library formed a total population of 125 for the study. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics. The researchers found out that the attitude put up by library customers showed that they did more of removing resources from their normal position and tearing off or mutilating page(s), The study also revealed the varieties of library information resources available in the Nasarawa State University Library such as poor/inadequate facilities to access e-resource; lack of enough sitting space for users of the information resources and inadequate time allotted for the use of information resources. The researchers concluded that the attitude put up by the library customers is as a result of limited copies of information resources and inadequate facilities. Recommendations were made in order to improve the attitude of library customers to the use of library resources in Nasarawa State University Library

The paper x-rayed gender imbalance in governance in Nigeria. Efforts were made to conceptualize gender, gender imbalance and governance. The paper also examined the history of women participation in governance, the scope of women participation in governance and the challenges confronting women participation in governance in Nigeria. The paper established that while women’s role in governance dates back in history, their  participation  in politics has been historically hampered by their socio-economic status, cultural bias, lack of party support, the patriarchal system, poor public perception of women in politics, zero sum nature of politics in Nigeria and absence of a deep democratic structure, amongst others. Against these findings, some recommendations were made. Support network and prospective role models; Through the identification of aspirants and pairing them with established women politicians; Playing a mentoring role and providing capacity building training to young or aspiring female politicians; Building a Coalition of NGOs and Grassroots women associations that coordinate the support and advocacy for women aspirants;  Creative environment that allows women to engage in decision making processes in a sustainable and effective way free from political harassment and violence; and Establishment of legal funds to enable women politicians to challenge electoral malpractices. Finally, there is the need to identify and engage relevant stake holders such as the Independent National Electoral Commission and political parties in introducing quota for women in the democratic process.&nbsp

Education Counterpart Funding Scheme in Nigeria: The Journey So Far

    Get PDF
The Nigerian educational system has witnessed a number of laudable programmes targeted at making needed funds available for its operation. However, the agitation against paucity of and the clamour for more funds remain a major challenge among stakeholders in the educational sector. Often times, little or nothing is usually known about the efficiency of these instituted funding schemes before they are scrapped, restructured or others of similar outlook or mandate are established. Currently, the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Counterpart Funding Scheme is on course, but how well it has been able to cater for basic education that it is meant for is a major issue that requires attention. Between 2005 and 2014, the rate at which states accessed the funds was really disappointing. States like Ebonyi, Benue, Cross River, etc, led the list of defaulting states with up to #3 billion un-assessed. Basically, states in the northern part of Nigeria accessed the funds more than their southern counterparts. Lack of political will is however, largely responsible for the default by states in accessing the funds. Conclusively, states need to be proactive in this regard as it is a means of getting necessary funds to meet the needs of basic education

    Get PDF
The study adopted an Ex-post facto Experimental research design to investigate the integrated psycho-socio scientific argumentation into face-to-face facilitation and its effect on Physics performance of open and distance learners. The sample size consisted of randomly selected 28 learners of an open and distance institution. The instrument for data collection was Physics Performance Test administered following the two modes of facilitations. The research instrument was validated with face and content validity and a test re-test administered after three weeks. The obtained alpha value was 0.71.  t – test statistical method at 0.05 level of significance was used to analyse the grade scores obtained in Physics Performance Test. The results showed that the performance of learners who were facilitated with the integrated psycho-socio scientific argumentation into face-to-face facilitation performed significantly from those facilitated with ordinary face-to-face facilitation (t =3.85 > 0.002). The study recommends that psycho-socio scientific argumentation integrated with face-to-face facilitation be used as a mode of facilitation for Physics distance learners in open and distance university educatio

Analysis of the Effect Public Expenditure on Tertiary Education has on Human Capital Development in Nigeria

    Get PDF
This paper examined the effect public expenditure on tertiary education had on human capital development in Nigeria within the period 1977-2014 using co-integration and error correction mechanism. The findings revealed that tertiary institution enrolment and gross capital formation were both statistically significant and positively related to high level manpower (proxy for human capital development) in the long and short-run periods while public expenditure on education exhibited negative impact, though statistically insignificant, on high level manpower in the long and short-run periods. This appears to constitute a major policy challenge considering the yearly increase in budgetary allocation to education in the country. Implications of these findings and policy option were thereafter presented

    Get PDF
This paper examined the issue of education and unemployment in Nigeria based on the review of extant literature. Despite Nigeria being acclaimed as the ‘giant of Africa’ and the second largest economy in Africa as well as being blessed with abundant human and natural resources ,the country has continued to grapple with a high unemployment rate particularly among the youth and graduates with the severe attendant consequences. The major causes were attributed to the political instability and policy inconsistencies of governments in the socio-economic and educational developments, neglect of the agricultural sector and the inability of higher or university education to provide graduates with the requisites entrepreneurial skills and training to become employers or employable after graduation. Various governments’ intervention strategies have failed to address the unemployment problem due to their un-sustainability and poor implementation. While the education-unemployment gap is widening, the paper suggests that the gap can be bridged by restructuring the education system with more emphasis on entrepreneurship, diversification of the Nigerian economy and re-prioritization of the agricultural sector, among other

The paper investigated the factors that aid youth restiveness in Lafia metropolis of Nasarawa State. The population consisted of all the youths who are within the ages of 19-35 years.  A sample size of 500 was through the multi stage random sampling technique selected from the population of youths living in Lafia in Nasarawa State. A questionnaire titled “Factors of Youth Restiveness” was designed by the researcher. The questionnaire was validated for face, content and construct. The reliability was ascertained by the test-retest method .Three research hypotheses were raised to guide the study at 0.05 level of significance. Hypothesis I was tested by students’ t-test, hypothesis two by Pearson Product Moment Correlation and hypothesis iii by multiple regression analysis. Findings from the study indicated a significant difference between male and female youths and their restiveness, and no significant difference in youths’ restiveness and their religious background. Unemployment, poverty and lack of infrastructural facilities are predictors of youths’ restlessness. Unemployment was the highest predictor. A New Trend in the Teaching of Mathematics: The Mathematics Laboratory Method

    Get PDF
This paper examined the laboratory method of teaching as a way of improving the teaching of Mathematics in schools. The main thrust of the method is that teaching is based on self-doing by the learners through the use of instructional aids, models and manipulatives, while the teacher only plays the role of a facilitator. Some of the activities in a Mathematics laboratory are encapsulated in this paper. It is suggested that the schools, teachers and other stakeholders should brace up to the challenge of embracing the Mathematics laboratory method as an effective way of improving the teaching of the subject in schools. It is recommended that government should make a deliberate policy for the establishment of Mathematics laboratories in schools
