Teacher Personality and Effective Classroom Management in Secondary Schools in Nigeria
Get PDFIn social organizations, human behavior is very important when it comes to organizational success or failure. The school as a social system is not left out. Studies have shown that teachers wield more influence on students’ academic achievement. Out of all the teachers attributes, personality is outstanding. It is on this premise that this study examines the relevance of teacher’s personality on effective classroom management in secondary schools in Nigeria. Variables such as personality dimension, factors that influence teacher’s personality, effective classroom management techniques and the importance of teacher’s personality and effective classroom management were considered. The study revealed that effective classroom management depends greatly on teacher’s personality. No meaningful achievement of educational goals could be realized where teachers possess negative attitude towards their students and the subjects being taught. Effective managerial skills were also linked to teacher personality which accounts for the level of organization, charisma, and unique adjustment to classroom processes. The study opines that worthy personality traits with appropriate classroom management techniques, places the teacher on an edge to have a better control of the students and manage the classroom effectively. The result of this study has implication for teachers, school administrators and educational planners. Conclusion was drawn and suggestions were made
Study of Academic Self Concept in Relation to Mathematics Academic Achievement of Senior Secondary School Students
Get PDFThis study examines academic self-concept as it correlates to Mathematics achievement among Senior Secondary School students in Edo State. The purpose of the study is to explore the relationship between academic self-concept as correlates of achievement in mathematics among senior secondary school students in Edo State. The study adopted a correlation research design. The study sample consists of 698 students who were randomly sampled from the population of 27,937 students in pubic senior secondary school students’ in Edo Sate. Both the independent and dependent variables were measured with relevant standardized instruments. To guide the study, three research questions and a hypothesis were raised and formulated. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and pearson r correlation coefficient statistical techniques. The results showed that academic self-concept positively and significantly predicted students’ academic achievement in Mathematics. In terms of the magnitude of contribution, academic self-concept made a significant contribution to academic achievement. On the basis of the findings, it was recommended among others that academic self-concept should be enhanced using appropriate counselling strategies. Teachers and counselors should be supported to enable them help students improve on their academic achievement in Mathematics
Distribution of Public Primary Schools and Provisions of Facilities in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State: Education Management Imperative
Get PDFThe purpose of the paper is to find out the extent of equity in the distribution of public primary schools and the provision of facilities in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Among the findings are that wards 2 and 6 do not have any public primary school. Library and first aid facilities and toilets are in short supply in the schools. It was therefore concluded that there is inequity in the provision of public primary schools and school facilities in the local government area. It was recommended that the lopsidedness in the school distribution pattern in the state should be reversed by downplaying it to the barest level of politicization of school distribution and location
Influence of Teachers’ Motivation on the Academic Performance of Public Secondary School Students in Nigeria
Get PDFTeacher motivation has become an important teaching skill, given its significance in imparting knowledge and skills to learners. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to investigate the Influence of Teachers’ Motivation on the Academic Performance of public Secondary School Students in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, Edo State. A self-designed questionnaire titled “Influence of Teachers’ Motivation on the Academic Performance” was used for the study. The research design adopted for this study is the descriptive survey. Purposive sampling was used to select 10 senior secondary schools from Akoko-Edo local government area. Twenty-two (22) teachers were randomly selected from each of the 10 selected schools. Hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance, data collected were analyzed using t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The result showed that there is a significant difference in the factors that influence teachers’ motivation in public secondary schools in Akoko-Edo LGA, Edo State based on gender and educational qualification. Psychological Effects and Teacher Effectiveness in Classroom Instructional Practices in Schools

Their proficiency in instructional practice will not just remedy the misdemeanors exhibited by students, it will also promote a cordial relationship between parents and the school management. This study has therefore, explored the significance of psychological tenets in enhancing the effectiveness of a classroom teacher. The instructional practices from a psychological and learner’s perspectives and psychologist’s views on teachers’ effectiveness were investigated. The aim of the study was to examine the psychological effects on teaching and learning practices in the classroom. Since a lot of time and efforts were needed in pedagogy, teachers were advised to put in conscientious effort/time in instructional practice. Though teachers might be frustrated because of the demanding nature of teaching, but with commitment, motivation and patience, teachers may get through tough moments. Nursing Management Perspective of Health Care for Patients with Glaucoma in the Nigerian Health System
Get PDFNurses, especially the ophthalmic nurses, should rise up to the challenge of the silent thief of sight known as glaucoma which is popularly referred to as the second leading cause of blindness in Nigeria and the world at large. Just as hypertension is to the heart and circulatory system so also, glaucoma is to the eyes. The effect of losing one’s sight cuts across every aspect of the individuals’ life, physically, mentally, psychologically, socially and otherwise. Thus, there is the need to constantly sound the trumpet of awareness about this disease that comes as an individual ages. The causes, types, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, assessment and diagnostic findings, pharmacological, surgical and a comprehensive nursing management of patients with glaucoma, prevention/control of glaucoma and follow-up care were reviewed. This was in order to help create the awareness about the disease and the need to prevent and control the progress of the disease, thus helping in the reduction of the incidence of blindness caused by “the silent thief of sight”. Hence, recommendations were made to promote the knowledge of the disease, and for early assessment for those at risk of the disease and early treatment to prevent complications associated with it. The role of a nurse in the fight against blindness is crucial as he/she has the advantage of meeting people and earning their trust both within and outside the clinical setting
Students’ Perception of the Organisation and Administration of the Study Centres of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)
Get PDFThis study was carried out to investigate students’ perception of the organisation and administration of the study centres of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). The two sampled study centres are McCarthy Study Centre in Lagos and Awa-Ijebu in Ogun State. This study was motivated by students’ complaints of non-availability of course materials and poor distribution channels, to mention but a few. This research was carried out using a survey design. A sample of 120 students was randomly selected from 6 schools. The instruments used were questionnaires. Simple percentage and chi-square (X2) distribution was used as a test statistics in testing the hypotheses. From the findings, it was discovered that there were delays in logistics of printing and distribution of course materials. Also, it was revealed that students did not make use of facilities provided by the University that would help them in their academic work, like the library and counselling services. Based on the findings, it was recommended that management should remove administrative bottle neck so that learners would be able to collect their course materials on time, hence prompt submission of tutor-marked assignments. Students should be encouraged on the imperativeness of global ICT compliance and the need to acquire knowledge and practical skills on ICT
Nurse Educators’ use of Information and Communication Technology to Enhance the Learning Experiences of Nursing Students in Edo State, Nigeria
Get PDFInformation and Communication Technology (ICT) is now a global phenomenon being harnessed in all facets of life due to its rich potential in national development. This study explored how nurse educators use ICT to enhance the learning experiences of nursing students in Edo State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was employed to sample a population of all 36 nurse educators in the three universities that offer Bachelor in Nursing Science degrees by a self-administered questionnaire. Results showed that all the respondents used laptops 34(100%); 30(88%) used them to store information and browse the internet. Audio based ICT facilities such as voice recorders were employed by 22 (64.7%) for direct class room facilitation. The study established that high educational qualifications had a direct impact on computer use at a p-value of 0.05df. It enjoined government to enforce its basic requirement of computer literacy for all educators in nursing institutions while taking steps to provide ICT facilities especially desktop computers with internet connectivity as part of the nurse educators’ office equipment
Explorative Study on the Causes and Effects of Examination Malpractice among Secondary School Students in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nigeria.
Get PDFThe study investigated the causes and effects of examination malpractice among secondary school students in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nigeria. Five objectives and five null hypotheses guided the study. The survey design was adopted for the study. The researcher selected 100 students and 50 teachers from each of the six area councils in FCT which constituted the sample for the study. Four rating scale structured questionnaire titled causes and effects of examination malpractice questionnaire (CEEMQ) was used for data collection. Validity of the instrument was determined by experts in Education. Test re-rest method was used to establish the reliability of the instrument which gave coefficient value of 0.89. The researchers and six research assistants personally distributed the instrument. Data collected were coded into Statistical Package of Social Sciences which was used to run Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC) into the test null hypotheses one, two and three while chi-square was used to determine null hypotheses four and five. All the null hypotheses were tested at significant level of 0.05. The result revealed, among others, that teachers, peers and students contributed to examination malpractices among students in secondary schools in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria. Consequently, this affected class attendance and study habit of the students. In view of these, it was recommended, among others, that counselling units of schools should help to improve the moral upbringing of students and teachers through enlightenment campaigns.
