Effect of light intensity on growth and anthocyanin accumulation in leaves of black glutinious rice

    No full text
Light intensity is an important factor affected rice growth and productivity. A comparative study on the effects of light intensity were investigated in three cultivars of black glutinous rice No.19, 27 and 51. Seeds were hydroponically grown for 30 days then divided into 3 groups: grow under natural light condition (300 Klux) and under low light condition 2 levels (3 and 1 Klux) using shaded net. The effect of light intensity on four growth-stages including; seedling, tillering, heading and maturity was observed. The results showed that the low light intensity caused decrease fresh weight, dry weight and anthocyanin contents in all cultivars. Moreover, the heading stage had higher anthocyanin content than other stages. The No. 51 had the highest level of anthocyanin content 0.96 mg/g FW. However, the anthocyanin was reduced 60% under low light intensity. The data from this study indicated that the low light intensity limited growth and anthocyanin accumulation in the leaves of black glutinous rice

Reducing of severity of bacterial leaf blight disease of rice by integrated disease management in irrigated area of the lower north

Bacterial leaf blight disease (BB) of rice caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (ex Ishiyama) (Xoo). In 2007 found severe outbreak in central region and lower north region of Thailand in Phitsanulok 2 and Chai Nat 1 variety. The farmers’s yield has been damaged. Integrated disease management (IDM) by applied the cultural practices combined with bactericide to reduce the disease severity in paddy field, that cultivated non-resistant variety to BB. To maintain yield meet potential of rice varieties or reduce damage to a minimum. In wet season 2010, research in paddy field of Chai Nat rice research center by broadcasting Chai Nat 1 variety. Results showed that, applied the rate of seed and fertilizer according to the advice of Rice Department (RD) combined with sprayed bacbicure 25%WP (Canoron®) 30g/20 liter water, could reduce the disease severity at 14 35 and 41 DAI Xoo. 1.5-4%, 12-16% and 6-10% respectively. Bacbicure could reduce the disease severity in the flag leaf and first leaf below the flag leaf. If this leaf area were much destroyed would affect the photosynthesis, the percentage of filled grains decreased, lightweight seeds and low yield. Applied RD’s practice combined with sprayed bacbicure to increase the number of panicle/m2 and the percentage of filled grain better than all treatments. Disease severity increase when using high urea and broadcast rice seed overcrowded. In wet season 2011, research in farmer’s field, Sukhothai Phitsanulok and Uttaradit province by broadcasting Phitsanulok 2 variety. IDM by applied the rate of seed and fertilizer according to the advice of RD, split using the urea combined with survey the disease regularly and sprayed bacbicure when found the disease early, could reduce the disease severity in flowering stage 10–28%. In severe epidemics area percentage of filled grain better than farmer’s practice 1.57–23.37%

Effect of cultivar and freezing on quality of cooked rice

    No full text
This study investigated the effect of freezing on quality of cooked rice. Four rice cultivars: Khao Dawk Mali 105 (KDML 105), Pathum Thani 1 (PT 1), Khao Tah Haeng (KTH) and Leung 11 (L11) were used in this study. After cooking and freezing, the frozen cooked rice was freeze-thawed up to 3 cycles. For the textural properties and sensory evaluation, the results showed that the unfrozen and freeze-thawed cooked rice from KDML 105 had the lowest hardness and the highest stickiness whereas rice from L11 had the highest hardness and the lowest stickiness. In addition, the freeze-thaw cooked rice had a tendency to increase hardness and decrease stickiness with subsequent freeze-thaw cycles. From a scanning electron micrograph, the surface of the unfrozen cooked rice from KDML 105 and PT 1 exhibited a smooth surface more than the other cultivars; however, after repeated freezethaw cycles the surface of the cooked rice became rough, in particular KTH and L11 cultivars. These results indicated that the cultivar of rice grains influenced the quality of frozen cooked rice. The knowledge from this study can be useful for improving the quality of frozen cooked rice

Needs for extension services of sugarcane growers in northeastern region

    No full text
This research aims at identifying needs for agricultural extension services of sugarcane growers in the Northeastern region. The data were collected from 494 sugarcane growers in 2009/2010. It was found that knowledge on white leaf disease control, selection of sugarcane cultivars and soil improvement were highly needed. The highly needed extension technology methods was study tour at successful sugarcane farm. The highly needed support included price assurance, arrangement on sugarcane stalk procurement and arrangement on fertilizers and chemicals procurement. The sugarcane growers with shorter period of being membership needed knowledge on sugarcane production to greater extension than there with longer period of being membership.

Improving dehusking efficiency of jasmine rice

    No full text
Dehusking is an important process in rice processing, however its main problem is kernels brokenness. Consequently, this study is aimed to improve dehusking efficiency of jasmine rice by decreasing percentage of broken kernels. It was found that surface lathering, temperature control and controlling of dehusking rate can reduce the brokening of kernel more than 1%
