    Process design of quick cooking rice (KDML 105) by microwave

    Process design of quick cooking rice by using microwave has not been studied before. This project used microwave cooking and microwave drying in the process of quick cooking rice production. The white rice (KDML 105) was soaked in water for 1 hour until the moisture content of 30% was reached and then cooked by microwave at 800 Watt for 10 minutes using the rice and water ratio 1:9 until the moisture content was 63%. The cooked rice is dried by a continuous microwave of 1000 Watt, belt speed 6.72*10-3 m/s for 10 rounds. The total time of drying was 14.1 minutes. The final moisture content of quick cooking rice was 12%. The quick cooking rice was rehydrated by soaking in boiling water for 9 minutes or soaking in tap water at room temperature (28 ºC) in 30 minutes. The quality of rehydrated rice was acceptable and was similar to the normal cooked rice

    Optimal crop nutrient management for sugarcane production on sandy soil in the northeast of Thailand

    An effective nutrient management for plant cane production on sandy soil was investigated. This aimed to be a guideline of fertilizer recommendation for plant cane production on sandy soil in the Northeast of Thailand. The experiment was conducted in Ban Phai soil series at Khon Kaen Province. The experimental design was split-split plot with 3 replications. Main plots comprised 1) without soil amendment and 2) amendment with 100 kg/rai of dolomite and 1,000 kg/rai of filtercake compost. Subplots consisted of Khon Kaen 3 and LK92-11 sugarcane varieties. Sub-subplots were fertilizer application levels i.e. 0-6-18, 9-6-18, 18-6-18, and 27-6-18 kg N-P2O5-K2O/rai. The results showed that average yield of plant cane grown on infertile Ban Phai soil series without soil improvement was rather low about 11.43 t/rai. When the soil was amended with dolomite and compost, the yield of plant cane increased to 15.35 t/rai. Comparison between both sugarcane varieties showed that Khon Kaen 3 variety was higher production potential than LK92-11 variety, in which average yield of Khon Kaen 3 was 14.20 t/rai whereas that of LK92-11 variety was 12.59 t/rai. As an aspect of economic returns, if the soil was amended with dolomite and compost, nitrogen fertilizer application could be reduced to a lower rate. Without soil amendment, the fertilizer should be applied at 18-6-18 kg N-P2O5-K2O/rai for Khon Kaen 3 variety and 27-6-18 kg N-P2O5-K2O/rai for LK92-11 variety. On the other hand, with compost application, the chemical fertilizer should be applied at a lower level of 9-6-18 kg N-P2O5-K2O/rai for Khon Kaen 3 variety and 18-6-18 kg N-P2O5-K2O /rai for LK92-11 variety, which maximized benefit for economic returns

The group 1 (biotype 4) and group 2 (biotype 5), the percentage decrease in group 3 New biotype has the years 2006 and the year 2009 found that the biotype of a group of 4 percent of the biotype changes that reflect the evolution adaptation of insect pests of rice in the rice varieties resistant to infection.

    Identification of phytopathogenic bacteria of rice, Xanthomonase oryzae, by mass spectrometry of whole cell protien extracts

    100 isolates of phytopathogenic bacteria of rice, Xanthomonas oryzae, were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–time of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The results showed the whole-cell protein spectrum profile of mass spectra of Xanthomonas oryzae pv.oryzae,and X. oryzae pv. oryzicola shared the common spectra peak. However, X. oryzae pv.oryzae presented difference mass spectra at 2641.55, 3729.83, 4919.52, 5608.13, 9857.82, 12480.64 and 18737.92 m/z.whereas X. oryzae pv. oryzicola presented unique spectra of 6279.48 and 9179.89 m/z

    DNA fingerprinting of Thai rice recommended cultivars

    DNA fingerprints are DNA banding patterns obtaining from DNA samples that have been undergone through molecular genetic processes. These DNA fingerprints can be used to identify the genetic relationships or differences among individuals. DNA fingerprints will be very useful for plant varietal protection in the future, especially for those economically important crops. Regarding to plant varietal protection, an information used to describe agronomic characteristics of a given plant variety should follow Mendelian rules and not be affected by environments. DNA fingerprints of 33 Thai recommended rice varieties were conducted by using 32 DNA markers. The DNA banding patterns at each locus were compared to allele standards that have been conducted from 17 rice varieties. The results show that at some loci, such as, RM261, RM190, GT11 and RM220, the DNA banding patterns of recommended varieties were similar to allele standard. On the other hand, at some loci, such as, RM165, RM257, RM206 and RM235, the DNA banding patterns of recommended varieties were quite different from those of allele standards. The DNA fingerprints of these Thai recommended rice varieties will be very useful for plant varietal protection and identification in the future

    Study on time of harvesting and main crop stubble height on ratooning rice production in Nakhon Si Thammarat

    Study to determine the appropriate of harvesting time and main crop stubble height for stubble-lodging rice ratooning method was conducted at farmers’ fields in Dontro subdistrict, Chalermprakiat district, Nakorn Si Thammarat province, from January to September 2011. Rice cultivar named Phitsanulok 2 was used in this experiment at the seed rate of 20 kg/rai by wet broadcast seeding for the main crop. The experiment was designed in split plot with 4 replication. The main plot was 2 groups of harvesting times: 28 and 34 days after 80 % flowering. The subplots was 3 groups of stubble height: 5-10, 20-25, and 40-45 cm. Plot size was 10x10 m2. Stubble lodged was done by driving a towing tractor with tires wheels. Wet broadcast seeding rice was conducted in the second crop to compare growth and yield. The result showed that there was no significantly different yield of the main crop between the 28 days and the 34 days. And there was also no significantly different yield of the stubble-lodging rice ratooning which was harvested different times: 28 and 34 days with 379 and 423 kg/rai, respectively. The yield of stubble height of 20-25 cm. was the highest, 445 kg/rai, but there was no significantly different from the 5-10 cm., 420 kg/rai. The 40-45 cm. high stubble had the lowest yields, 356 kg/rai but there was no significantly different from the 5-10 cm. There was interaction between main crop harvesting time and stubble height on the yield. Main crop harvesting time at 34 days after 80% flowering at 20-25 cm. stubble height was the highest yield, 529 kg/rai which the yield was 81% and 98% of the main crop and the wet broadcast seeding in the second crop, respectively

    Effects of spermidine application on chlorophyll fluorescence, proline content and electrolyte leakage of black glutinous rice leaves under salt stress

    Saline soil is a major problem that affects growth and productivity of rice. Spermidine (Spd), a member of polyamine (PA), is a plant growth regulator playing essential roles in protecting many crop plants under salinity stress. The objective of this study was to explore the roles of exogenous spermidine in protecting salt-stressed rice plants by evaluating its effects on three physiological indicators of plant stress. Two black glutinous rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L. spp. indica), including cv.Gs.no.00621(salt tolerant) and cv. LLR-039 (salt sensitive) were grown in potted soils until early booting stage. The plants were then arranged into three treatment groups including 1) control 2) 25 mM NaCl and 3) foliar application with 1 mM Spd prior to exposure to 25 mM NaCl. In treatment groups 2 and 3 the plants were treated with 25 mM NaCl for 20 days before the leaves were harvested for physiological determination. Salt stress slightly reduced chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) in both cultivars, while proline content was dramatically increased in LLR-039. Electrolyte leakage increased in both cultivars especially LLR-039. Pretreatment with Spd slight increased Fv/Fm in both cultivars and markedly decreased proline and electrolyte leakage in LLR-039. Therefore, spermidine application improved salt tolerance of rice by increasing quantum efficiency of PSII, reducing proline and cell membrane damage particularly in salt-sensitive rice
