The Hypocrite Can Be Killed, but Hypocrisy Survives: Interview with Theatre Director Gábor Tompa

Born on August 8, 1957, in Târgu-Mureș, Gábor Tompa is a Romanian-Hungarian theatre director with extensive activity both within Romania’s borders and abroad. Since 1990, he has been the Manager of the Hungarian State Theatre in Cluj-Napoca and, since 2018, the President of the Union of European Theatres. Over time, he has staged highly successful productions in numerous significant Romanian institutions, receiving multiple nominations and distinctions from UNITER (Theatre Union of Romania). He is also a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters from the French government (Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres). Due to his special fascination with Molière’s personality, he first staged Tartuffe in 1994 at the Institute of Theatre Arts in Târgu-Mureș. He later revisited the play, notably with a critically acclaimed production in 2000 at Theatre de l’Union in Limoges, France. Similarly, in 2011, over a decade after staging The Misanthrope at the Hungarian State Theatre in Cluj-Napoca, he created a new production of the same play at the National Theatre in Iași, in an entirely different aesthetic paradigm. During this interview, I attempted to unravel the driving forces behind this enduring fascinationwith one of the founders of European comedy, whose dramatic stakes transcend mere frivolous amusement

Spectral Bodies and Superimposition in Photography and Film

During the Victorian age, post-mortem and spirit photography became increasingly popular so that those who had lost dear people were offered an extended mourning ground. These types of images were produced in great number in order to prove the existence of the other world. It is natural that many of these dead people portraits deal with transparency, blur and diffusion, as the result of superimposing reality and spectrality. Later on, ectoplasms were caught on photosensitive materials by a great number of spirit hunters, aiming at the same purpose of demonstrating the physicality of the invisible order. Cinema imported the spiritualist themes and the subjects related to them and continued the same tradition of revealing to the common eye of the spectator a supernatural realm. Our paper analyses the aesthetics of different styles and techniques of working with these delicate subjects in photography and film throughout the ages, from Mumler to Méliès

A Complex Transmedia Universe about Myths, Creatures and Traditions

The In-Between Worlds Transmedia Universe started out as a blank whiteboard. Sixteen students, three coordinators and multiple contributors and collaborators created this Universe together, during one full semester (from October 2022 until February 2023). The project culminated with an exhibition that lasted one week, with the opening on 11 February in the Ethnographical Museum of Transylvania located in the heart of Cluj-Napoca city, Romania. The project revolves around the subject of mythological creatures, myths and traditions from the territory of Romania. The exhibition was meant to showcase the ephemeral parts of this project, such as: several interactive installations, projections, photography exhibition, Virtual Reality experience, but also the more permanent parts of the project, such as: the feature documentary and the card game. It is important to understand what exactly means the domain of the Transmedia, what are the elements and components that build a Transmedia Universe and how exactly this project encompasses each one of those, in order to achieve a complex and complete structure, and to also understand the reasoning behind each artistic product

Lire-enseigner Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme de Molière en classe de français au secondaire marocain : une œuvre classique devant des élèves-lecteurs adolescents

In this article, we have undertaken an in-depth study of the reading of classical texts, highlighting their current state. To this end, we examined the  theoretical underpinnings of the teaching of these classical works in Morocco, seeking to understand how they are transmitted to students. We adopted a concrete approach, using the method of direct classroom observation to analyze the specific difficulties encountered when teaching a classical work to adolescent student-readers. In addition, we looked at the impact of Molière’s work on students’ ethical representations, seeking to determine how classical literature can influence their perception of the world and moral values. Finally, to encourage the development of students’ written production skills, we shared a practical experience using the pastiche of the exposition scene from Molière’s Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. This comprehensive research aims to enrich our understanding of the importance of classical texts in contemporary education and proposes innovative pedagogical approaches to stimulate students’ interest and engagement with these iconic literary works. In this article, we have undertaken an in-depth study of the reading of classical texts, highlighting their current state. Refreshing Remodelling of the Classics

This paper deals with several reinterpretations and rewritings of classic texts by two directors, Susanne Kennedy and Silviu Purcărete. The theoretical framework is represented by Hans-Thies Lehmann’s idea of postdramatic theatre, but also by the reflection on how technological media change the way we look at classical texts. If Susanne Kennedy is passionate about Internet dramaturgy and technical devices, Silviu Purcărete, a director inspired by a visuality of pictorial origin, resorts to a more metaphoricalsymbolic way of deconstructing the dramatic texts

Critiques de Molière, de Rousseau à Baudelaire : idéologie, psychologie, esthétique

This paper deals with a number of interpretations that have been given to Molière’s work, namely that undertaken by Rousseau in his Lettre à d’Alembert sur les spectacles and those attempted by Baudelaire in fragmentary form in many of his writings. Rousseau’s and Baudelaire’s perspectives are ideologically divergent, but a closer reading reveals also psychological and aesthetic differences. The shifting perspectives between these authors are all the more surprising because Baudelaire was not only a critic of Molière but also a critic of Rousseau, yet he drew inspiration from the writings of both in his poems. The binary, linear hermeneutic is overcome here in favour of a triangular, or even plural, reading, as voices such as Sainte-Beuve’s or Nietzsche’s are occasionally summoned to diversify the possible points of view. This paper deals with a number of interpretations that have been given to Molière’s work, namely that undertaken by Rousseau in his Lettre à d’Alembert sur les spectacles and those attempted by Baudelaire in fragmentary form in many of his writings.
