Archaeology Workshops as an Educational Approach in Communication with the Public – Case Study Roman Games in Ptuj
The Roman Festival in Ptuj aims to connect the local community and visitors with the Roman heritage and present a part of Roman life that includes the army, gladiatorial fights, conflicts with the Barbarians, traditional Roman food, craftsmen, etc. Within the project “Sadike na prihodnost” supported by the Erasmus + programme, some educational activities were organised during the event. This was a good opportunity for the creation of specific and thematically defined archaeological workshops, which were used as a good educational approach in communication between professionals and the wider public. Visitors were also able to get acquainted with the skills required for the slingshot used by Roman soldiers, through a practical workshop that students prepared. In such a way it can be said that the project results contributed to a widening educational approach towards the Ptuj public and the local community

Opal ring from Novo Brdo and gemstone rings in the late Middle Ages
Rings made entirely of one piece of gemstone are a rarity in medieval
jewellery. One such ring, made of opal, was discovered during the most recent archaeological
excavations in Novo Brdo, in a layer above the floor in a house near
the north-eastern ramparts of the lower town, which was formed during the second
half of the 14th century. This paper will examine the circumstances of the finding
of the ring, the technical details of its production and the marks that appeared
during use, i.e. wearing. Another ring of the same type, but made of carnelian, had
been previously discovered in the area of the Novo Brdo Cathedral. In addition
to the two mentioned, more specimens are known, among them several from archaeological
contexts. This interesting group of rings raises questions about possible
models, sources of raw materials, method of production, symbolism, as well
as about the skill of the master jeweller and the requirements of the customers. In
addition, special attention will be paid to the technical aspects of the production,
as one of the possible ways to establish a more precise chronological framework for
jewellery rings, as well as to better understand the social and cultural contexts in
the Middle Ages

Paths of Storytelling Focused on Archaeology and Its Outreach Potential – Case Study Roman Games in Ptuj
This paper presents an example of good practice in the case of (re)presenting and the popularisation of heritage in cooperation with the local community. In addition to this kind of cooperation, the Roman Games in Ptuj is an event of an international character, reuniting the Western Balkan countries, which additionally helps the presentation of heritage and knowledge exchange and experience based learning. Via various activities and workshops, archaeological knowledge and finds related to the Roman period were used as the basis for creating a story about the past. In such a case, storytelling was based upon scientific data, but one of the important topics in student workshops was the stereotypes set by popular culture about archaeology and archaeologists. Based on the conducted activities and workshops, and primarily on the experience from the Roman Games, the paper will discuss how the concept of public archaeology has changed over time and how effective it is to have both professional and local communities involved in order to create a better storytelling narrative about the past that is later shared with the general public
The necropolis along the north-western corner of the legionary fortress in Viminacium
During more recent archaeological research in the area of the legionary fort of the Legio VII Claudia in Viminacium, a part of the defensive ditch along the north-western part of the camp was also explored. Several archaeological units were discovered in this area, among others, a smaller necropolis with skeletal burials as well. This necropolis consists of 36 graves, mostly with brick and tegulae constructions, and also several freely buried individuals. On the basis of the stratigraphy and the few find of coins, this necropolis was dated to the second half of the 4th century. It is interesting to note that the most numerous graves at the necropolis are those of new-borns and children, with only a few adult individuals registered

Consequences of Hunnic raids and the newly-established border: An archaeological panorama of the Central Balkans (ca. 450–500)
According to Priscus, in 447 the Roman Empire and the Huns agreed to move their border away from the Danube, to a distance of five days’ journey from this river to the vicinity of Naissus. Yet, already in the next year Attila himself suggested that the border should be shifted back to the Danube. The death of this legendary Hunnic leader in 453 was soon followed by the collapse of their empire, but at least the northern parts of the Central Balkans remained out of Roman reach. Unlike those of earlier or later dates, Germanic finds from the second half of the 5th century
belonged to the ruling people and not to foederati. Together with them, this paper will bring together the Roman finds from the second half of the 5th century, mostly numismatic, to investigate their spatial distribution. These finds provide a glimpse into the Eastern Gothic strategy in these parts and an overview of the Roman strongholds upon which the 6th-century reconquista could have rested
Lokalitet Velika Humska Čuka-iskopavanja 2019. godine
