Archaeological Indications of Contacts between the Slavic Cultures of the Serbian Danube Region and Great Moravia

The study of the Great Moravian heritage is of importance for Serbian archaeology, all the more so as different kinds of archaeological finds from the wider Serbian Danube region, inlcuding the Velika Morava and Timok valleys, point to certain contacts with the regions of the Great Moravian state in present-day Czech Republic and Slovakia. While for some finds one may confidently suggest a Great Moravian workshop provenance, other finds, similar not exclusively to the Moravian ones, reflect wider Slavic fashion styles. Although the majority of our sample does not come from archaeological contexts, on the basis of central European parallels these finds can be dated to the 9th and the first half of the 10th centuries. There are two groups of indicative finds – jewellery and parts of clothing, and weapons and horse-riding equipment.Arheološki institut, Beograd. Posebna izdanja, knjiga 7

Osseous raw materials were very important for prehistoric communities that inhabited Pločnik. During the Late Neolithic Vinča culture, bones, antler and rarely teeth were used for a variety of objects, predominantly everyday tools, while imported mollusc shells, bones and antler were used for decorative and non-utilitarian items. Manufacturing techniques used were those known in other Vinča culture communities, and the typological repertoire has some of the widespread Vinča culture traits, but with few local traits. Objects were mainly carefully produced, with a limited number of ad hoc tools; sometimes traces of repair may be noted, but the raw materials were abundant and were not economised. Manufacturing debris shows that osseous artefacts were produced within the settlement. However, it was not possible to determine the location of a possible workshop or working area, since the majority of artefacts was discovered within contexts containing deposited material. Differences between earlier and later phases were not noted. The Bubanj culture horizon yielded a limited amount of tools, but they share the same techno-typological traits with other Early Eneolithic bone industries in the region

Throughout the year of 2017, the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments Nis has conducted rescue researches on the route of the Nis-Pirot highway, in the region of the village Stanicenje (Municipality of Pirot), at the locality Gradiste – Podgradje. The locality is situated in the narrow river plateau of the Nisava River and creates an entirety with a bigger settlement and its belonging fortification of unknown antique name (Latina?), on the route of the Roman road between Remesiana and Turres. The researches have discovered different construction remains (Roman bath, early-Christian sacral complex), which belong to the period between the second half of the III until the second hald of the VI century. The most significant discovered object is the larger early Christian basilica. The construction of the existing highway has destrayed the whole northern half of this basilica. In the south-western part of basilica, there was a crypt, in which the sceleton remains of 11 individuals of male gender were secundarily buried. In the western side of the complex, there was an additionally-constructed rectangular annex which had the function of the main entrance, with monumental stairs. Within the variety of archelogical findings, particularly interesting are numerous numismatic findings. The 168 coins found here, mostly belong to the period when the early Christian complex was in use. A detailed analysis of money circulation will have the purpose of defining a more precise chronology of this archeological site, in particular the periods when this sacral complex was in use and the circumstances in which it was abandone

U oktobru 2021.

A contribution to the study of archery on the basis of activity-induced stress markers on the skeleton

    No full text
During the examination of skeletal remains from historical periods, anthropologists often come across, among others, findings from soldiers’ graves as well. Aside from researches whose goal is to provide an interpretation of everyday life and habits of soldiers, their health status, examining the presence of ante-mortem and peri-mortem injuries which were not caused by accidents, but rather by deliberate violence (injuries caused by arms or tools, injuries as consequences of punishments, caused by fighting with “bare hands”, i.e. in direct frontal fights, etc.), and the level of medical care provided, the greatest challenge for the researchers is certainly the solving of problems regarding activity-induced stress markers linked to carrying military equipment, usage of specific types of arms or tools, riding, etc., while the deceased were in active military service. While studying soldiers’ graves, our attention was especially drawn by graves of archers from several sites in Serbia: Timacum Minus, Singidunum, Romuliana, Banjska Monastery and Resava (Manasija) Monastery. Aside from examining their health status and pathological changes, special attention was dedicated to deformities, anomalies and entheseal changes that occur on the skeletons as a result of physical stress

Viminacium: Segments of History Documented by Archaeology

    No full text
Excavations of the archaeological site of Viminacium began at the end of the 19th century with excavations of necropoleis that are still the most extensively researched areas due to rescue projects. The systematic research of the legionary fortress and the city only began in this millennium. The investigators have several sources in connecting historical and epigraphic knowledge about Viminacium as the capital of the Roman province Moesia Superior, later Moesia Prima, with the results of archaeological exploration. When it came to the necropolis, it was possible to connect a specific burial ritual with the soldiers of the auxiliary detachments who were stationed in Moesia Superior. With regard to buildings such as the amphitheatre, fortification, or aqueducts, the construction material could provide an answer to the question of the identification of the legion or legions present in the fortress. Special attention is paid to the recently discovered and researched site which is considered to provide events of events in the second half of the 3rd century AD

A Contribution to the Contemporary Development of Architectural Conservation in Serbia: Scientific Research on the Danube Limes Mortar
