Results of the recent excavations of the Late Neolithic Site Kotlina, Baranya county: flint, stone and bone artefacts
The site of Kotlina was discovered in 2009 during a large archaeology prospection project of Baranya in NE Croatia. Systematic archaeological research of the site was initiated in 2018 and the project “Kotlina, the prehistoric site” encompassed non-invasive field survey and excavations. Until today, the area covering approximately 150 m2 was excavated, revealing diverse archaeological structures: post holes, rubbish pits and graves. The portable archaeological finds were rich and diverse and consist of pottery sherds, animal bones, bone artefacts, chipped stone artefacts, polished and abrasive stone artefacts as well as one bead made from mollusc shell. Also, one very small fragment of copper and a large quantity of obsidian tools were discovered during the excavations. Portable archaeological finds and absolute dates show that the site can be attributed to the Late Neolithic Lengyel culture.
In this paper, the results of the analysis of flint, stone and bone artefacts using variety of techniques that focus on the raw materials selection, technology and typology will be presented. Both local and imported raw materials were used, thus showing a complex pattern of raw material acquisition and management.
The study of archaeological implements provided important information about the Lengyel communities located to the south of the Drava River. It will be very interesting to compare these data with other Lengyel sites in the north.[https://www.e-a-a.org/eaa2022/]

Design of Compatible Mortars for Conservation Interventions
Architectural heritage suffers from many deterioration patterns among which mortar aging and degradation present a significant task for conservation practitioners and scientists. The functional requirements of compatible repair mortars strongly depend on the properties of historical mortars. In this sense, in depth characterisation of historical mortars and technologies is crucial for the development and design of the repair mortars
Фрагменти црквеног градитељства у бедемима средњовековног Новог Брда / Fragments of sacral architecture in the ramparts of medieval Novo Brdo
This paper offers the first overview of the appearance and origin of architectural decorations built into the ramparts of the fort at Novo Brdo. It considers parts of decorations that have a wide repertoire of tracery motifs in shallow relief, as well as parts of the decorative-constructive composition of the façades. The research results suggest that these carved decorations belonged to two destroyed churches, unknown today. All the mentioned fragments indicate the manner of construction, decoration and artistic partition of the composition of the façades, which corresponds to the architecture of the most representative churches of Moravian Serbia
The use of polished stone axes and adzes in the Neolithic of Serbia - experimental research.
The polished stone tools with cutting edge, in addition to other polished stone objects with
practical and symbolic use, represent a peak of stone processing in prehistory. The main types
of these tools are polished stone axes, adzes, and chisels, which in the Neolithic, we can assume,
to the greatest extent have practical use in woodworking. It is also reasonable to assume that some of these tools were used in a number of other activities in the Neolithic, such as butchering,
hide processing, digging, making bone/antler tools, or as a battle or symbolic tools, as evidenced
by numerous ethnoarchaeological examples. The use of polished tools with cutting edge, and their
efficiency at work, is one of the least researched aspects of the polished stone industry, therefore
the reconstruction of their use was a significant and very inspiring segment within a much wider
archaeological experiment conducted between 2016 and 2019. One of the goals of this phase of
the experiment was to offer answers to various research questions from a functional-technological
point of view, among which the following stands out: what is the reason for the noticeable predominance of adzes in relation to axes at Neolithic sites in Serbia? Based on previous analyzes of the materials, we know that adzes are much more represented than axes, so we were interested
in whether such quantitative disproportionality is a consequence of the greater functionality, efficiency,
or applicability of adzes. We wanted to determine how much time and physical effort are
required to carry out each segment of the operational chain in the life cycle of these tools, as well as
to examine the dynamics of their damage and repairs. One of the main focuses was on determining
the effectiveness of axes and adzes when performing various woodworking tasks. The presentation
shows the preliminary results of the experiment which will be expanded in the future to other
abovementioned activities and materials. In: Ina Miloglav (ed.), Book of abstracts of 10th International Scientific conference Methodology & Archaeometry, 1st - 3rd of December 2022, Zagreb, Croatia, (pp. 42-43). Zagreb: Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb
Introduction: [Other People’s Anthropologies] [2008]
There were several formative moments in the creation of this book [i.e., Other People’s Anthropologies]. First of all, the idea of organizing the workshop on “Other Anthropologies” at the 2004 EASA conference in Vienna was suggested by Thomas Hylland Eriksen, as we were walking through the High Street of Grahamstown (South Africa) on a windy Sunday morning in May 2003. The two day (10–11 September) and three session workshop in Vienna went extremely well, in terms of both attendance and the discussions. Many papers from this workshop (by Kuznetsov, Elchinova, Sugishita, and Guber) eventually made it into this book
The economic and social importance of saline soils and saltwaters during the late neolithic of the Pannonian plain and the central Balkans
The importance of salt in human and animal diets suggests that the local resources of saline soils, watercourses, and marshes with saline water had to be well known to past populations. Based on the analysis of the environs of a large number of Late Neolithic and Early Eneolithic sites, this research assumes the great importance of such resources. This paper examines the spatial relationships between settlements and these resources, in the example of five Late Neolithic settlements from the territories of the Pannonian Plain and the Central Balkans. The goals of the research are to provide an initial step in the reconstruction of potential locations for salt exploitation, and provide a better understanding of each settlement and, subsequently, its role and function in the local Neolithic settlement system. The research considers previously published results of the pedological analysis of the settlement environments and archaeological investigations of the settlements. If certain micro-regions and regions did not provide possibilities for the extraction of salt for both animal and human utilisation, salt, and probably cattle, had to be procured through exchange networks. However, if livestock could not be grazed in areas abundant in salt, then salt would have to be added to the animals’ diet. We conclude that Late Neolithic settlements should not be observed in isolation, but rather аs parts of wider settlement systems including exchange networks with salt as a major commodity. This represents one of the crucial factors for the understanding of cultural development during the 5th millennium BC
