    Ceramic building materials of Viminacium

    Get PDF
Ceramic building materials1 were one of the key building materials of the Roman Empire. They were introduced to the area of the province of Moesia Superior and ancient Viminacium by the Romans. Prior to their arrival, the province was sparsely urbanised, and in the following centuries, Viminacium grew to be its largest agglomeration2. The site is located in Eastern Serbia, next to the modern town of Kostolac, on the right bank of the Mlava river, near its confluence with the Danube. It was first established as a legionary camp (castrum legionis), whose oldest phase dates to the Flavian period. In the late 1st - early 2nd century, a civilian settlement developed to the west of the camp. The city gained the status of municipium in AD 117, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, and in AD 239, during the reign of Emperor Gordianus III it was granted the status of colonia. The city and its surroundings were destroyed by the Huns in AD 441 and never again regained its former glory

Is Anybody out there? Viminacium Legionary Fortress in Late Antiquity

    No full text
Viminacium was an important military base, located at the confluence of the Mlava and the Danube rivers, within the province of Moesia Superior and Moesia Prima in the later period. During most of its history, it was the home of the Legio VII Claudia. According to recent archaeological excavations in the North-western part of the fortress and broader area of the principia, it was possible to define two main phases of the construction, as well as layers and features that date back to the late Roman period. This paper deals with the appearance of the legionary fortress in Late Antiquity. Based on destructed walls and ramparts, the filled V-shaped ditch, graves and buildings from the late Roman period, it is possible to suggest that the fortress was abandoned during the 4th century AD. In this paper, we will discuss the reasons for its abandonment, while we will also tackle the question of the plausible location of the legion in Late Antiquity

Searching for elements – creating a composition: from archaeometry to conservation of Roman constructions on the Danube in Serbia

Roman mortars have long been one of the most intriguing topics in the field of construction history, which together with archaeology has embraced many sciences and professional practices in order to unravel the technologies and knowledge of ancient builders. Among them, geology occupies a special place in the investigation of the origin of raw materials. At the same time, with the help of chemistry, it looks for their mutual relationships, which eventually led to composites with the use of which the most monumental Roman buildings were erected

In 2016, the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, Sremska Mitrovica, in cooperation with colleagues from the Museum of Srem (Sremska Mitrovica), conducted rescue archaeological excavations at No. 53–55 Palanka Street in Sremska Mitrovica.1 These excavations took place in part of the so-called Eastern Cemetery in Sirmium, which had been previously investigated in 1976 and 1977 (Map 1). On that occasion, remains of a late antique memorial structure were discovered, and parts of the ancient (3rd-4th century) and modern (18th century) cemetery. Unfortunately, the late antique tombs and graves were damaged to a large extent by looting, later burials and recovery of materials for secondary use (see the text by B. Lučić in this publication), which directly affected the human osteological material and greatly limited anthropological analysis and interpretation. The degree of preservation of the bone remains of individuals buried at this site for the most part falls into the category of well-preserved incomplete skeletons

    Get PDF
