The results of Roman mortars' characterisation of the former Danube Limes in Serbia are reported in this paper. The following procedures were used: detailed diagnosis of the defined archaeological sites, in situ characterisation of the building materials, sampling, laboratory analyses, interpretation and utilisation of the obtained results as well as up-to-date literature review of other research groups in the field. These procedures were defined and presented based on the results of the scientific project MoDeCo2000: Mortar Design for Conservation – Danube Roman Frontier 2000 Years after, financed through the programme PROMI

Optimo piscatu, Fish and fish-related finds from Roman Southern Pannonia and Upper Moesia as the evidence of global trade and local customs

    Get PDF
Literary, documentary, and archaeological sources for fish preservation and fishing during the Roman period are quite big but the story about fish, fishing and imports of fish products in Pannonia and Moesia is untold. Fishing and fish processing are culturally defined, its context is complex and aspects of the economic significance are multilayered. A significant number of Roman fishing implements from Siscia, a representative amount of fish remains from Viminacium and evidence gathered from amphorae and pottery from both provinces present the basis for understanding its economic role. The social context of consumption of fish and fish products can be seen in the light of the global trade (e.g. Hispanic garum documented by amphorae) and the local customs (freshwater fish remains within the archaeological context). Analysis of fish and fish-related finds are excellent tool for understanding the long distance trade and local supply, as well as data on the nutrition of different classes within society of Roman provinces

Palaeogenomic analysis of black rat (Rattus rattus) reveals multiple European introductions associated with human economic history

    Get PDF
The distribution of the black rat (Rattus rattus) has been heavily influenced by its association with humans. The dispersal history of this non-native commensal rodent across Europe, however, remains poorly understood, and different introductions may have occurred during the Roman and medieval periods. Here, in order to reconstruct the population history of European black rats, we first generate a de novo genome assembly of the black rat. We then sequence 67 ancient and three modern black rat mitogenomes, and 36 ancient and three modern nuclear genomes from archaeological sites spanning the 1st-17th centuries CE in Europe and North Africa. Analyses of our newly reported sequences, together with published mitochondrial DNA sequences, confirm that black rats were introduced into the Mediterranean and Europe from Southwest Asia. Genomic analyses of the ancient rats reveal a population turnover in temperate Europe between the 6th and 10th centuries CE, coincident with an archaeologically attested decline in the black rat population. The near disappearance and re-emergence of black rats in Europe may have been the result of the breakdown of the Roman Empire, the First Plague Pandemic, and/or post-Roman climatic cooling

Woman, wife, mother: everyday life of female residents of Viminacium

Ancient writers are known for often neglecting a number of important social topics in their works, thus, to a great extent influencing modern interpretations of Roman history and archaeology scholars, as well as the very choice of subjects dominating these sciences during 19th and 20th century. Moreover, history and archaeology of the Roman period developed during the imperial expansion of European colonial forces and this is why the contemporary dominant political thought influenced most of the early researchers and their perceptions of the past.1 For more than a century, the archaeology and history of the Roman period were dominated by topics related to military conquests, administration, and building activities, while neglecting entire social groups, such as women, children, slaves or foreigners. Because of all of the factors listed above, we are often looking at a distorted image of the Roman society, characterised by stereotypes, which are deepened and persist even with some of the modern researchers. The most common among them – supported by rigid misogynistic attitudes of ancient male authors – remain connected to the life and position of women in Antiquity. This is why the roles they played in the past are often simplified and insufficiently researched.2 Over the past thirty years, the global situation in science has significantly changed, although in domestic literature this topic is still rather unpopular. Despite that, a slight increase in interest for studying women of the Roman period in the territory of present-day Serbia is noticeable.

Jewellery and brooches: between functionality, aesthetic value, and status symbol

    Get PDF
Over the entire period of civilization’s development and owing to its beauty and the material it was made of, the basic role that jewellery played was decorative and aesthetic. This is exactly the reason why the Romans called it ornatus, ornamentum – ornament, decoration, although soon enough it became a status symbol. Through form, colour or material, jewellery was used to underline the power of protection, but in time, it became a favourite part of women’s, and often also men’s, everyday life. During the Roman civilization, two periods can be distinguished in understanding the role and importance of jewellery. In time of the Roman Republic, modesty was considered a virtue. Wearing expensive jewellery pointed to luxury and squandering, which was contrary to the expected women’s behaviour of the time. The Roman matron was a personification of humbleness, modesty and elegance. With the development and spread of the Roman Empire, the relationship towards jewellery also changed. There were no more limitations, nor modesty. Jewellery becomes more diverse and accessible

Animal diseases in the Central Balkan Eneolithic (ca. 4500-2500 BC)-A diachronic perspective on the site of Bubanj, south-eastern Serbia

    No full text
This paper aims to present the first evidence of animal diseases from the Central Balkan Eneolithic, a prehistoric period that lasted about 2000 years. The eponymous site of Bubanj in south-eastern Serbia provided a diachronic perspective on animal pathologies developing during this long time period. We analyzed 71 animal remains showing evidence of pathological changes. All of the remains exhibiting anomalies were subjected to macroscopic analysis, while the specimens with the most prominent alterations also underwent X-ray and CT imaging. Anomalies were observed mostly in domestic animals. Only in caprines were all of the different types of anomalies present, with dental pathologies being the most frequent. Degenerative bone alterations were noted in around 78% of the domestic cattle specimens, while congenital anomalies were the most common type in domestic pigs. Pathological changes were also noted in dogs, aurochs, red deer, wild boars, beavers, and bears. In most cases, the anomalies were caused by hereditary and environmental factors. Caprine dental pathologies were the result of aging and poor-quality nutrition. In domestic cattle, besides being caused by environmental factors, the degenerative alterations might also have been work related. The lack of paleopathological data from other Eneolithic sites in the region, and the scarce or non-existent evidence from the previous (Neolithic) and succeeding (Bronze Age) periods prevented comparative analyses and discussion of the results within wider temporal and spatial frames. Establishing a paleopathological investigation of animal remains with anomalies from the prehistoric Central Balkans should be a standard, in order to provide us with a better understanding of human-animal interactions
