The first five millennia of plant food production in the central and western Balkans: archaeobotanical evidence from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age
This paper takes a long-term perspective and looks at the development of plant food economies
from the Neolithic through to the Bronze Age (6300‑1000 BC) in the central and western parts
of the continental Balkans (southeast Europe), more specifically – the territories of Serbia,
*Kosovo1
, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It does this by overviewing the archaeobotanical
evidence of crop growing from sites archaeologically dated to the selected timespan. Farming
started in the region with the cultivation of at least six crop species early in the Neolithic.
Through time, the range grew steadily as new species were taken into cultivation whilst old
ones were maintained. Some crops changed their role over time, from minor to major or
vice versa, while the importance of others remained constant. Continuity, diversification and
innovation mark the five millennia of farming practice in the region
The Southernmost Exceptional Archaeological Discovery from the Hungarian Conquest Period: the Significance of Several Finds from Bačka Region (Serbia)
This paper will present several interesting archaeological finds from the period of the Hungarian Conquest, originating from Stanišić in Bačka – a part of a gilded belt set, a golden hoop and a golden finger-ring set with carnelian gem. These objects were discovered on a necropolis located on a mound, which was damaged in intense ploughing activities during the 1980s. After having been sold to the City Museum in Sombor the findings were kept in a safe, without being presented to a wider scientific public. According to their traits they correspond to the material culture of the
Hungarian warrior elite from the first half of the 10th century, and they have close analogies in necropoles from the Upper Tisza valley (e.g. Karos). On the other hand, certain similarities can also be noted with sites from the wider area of Eastern Europe. In this paper, we will analyse the origin, symbolism and artistic and crafting milieu of the items from Stanišić, with a special attention given to the interpretation of the gem with representation of a lion carved into it. According to preliminary analyses, the gem is most similar to Sasanian glyptic specimens, which imposes interesting questions regarding its use. In this sense, a wider social-historical context and routes of long-distance trade in early Middle Ages will also be taken into consideration.
All the data available suggests the possibility that the findings from Stanišić belonged to a prominent member (members) of the military elite. As the southernmost findings with clear emblematic meaning, they bear witness of the invasion routes of the Hungarian army outside of their primary settling zone in the north of the Carpathian Basin, on which there is little archaeological data for the time being
Recreating Historic European Spindle Spinning“

Late Antiquity and Early Christianity in the Roman Provinces of Moesia Prima and Dacia Ripensis, BAR International Series
The beginning and development of early Christianity along the Middle Danube Limes, in the Roman provinces of Moesia Prima and Dacia Ripensis, as well as cities and fortifications in the hinterland of the Limes during the two main stages of Late Antiquity and early Byzantine period are documented in literary sources and archaeological data. Our present knowledge of the spiritual life of the inhabitants of cities and fortifications in the Middle Danube Limes in Late Antiquity shows that, besides the dominance of the
official religion of Rome, the importance of Christianity was increasing, as evidenced by the preserved material remains. The new religion and changes that occurred in the cultural life of the autochthonous Romanised population can best be seen in the architecture and its most common forms. By the fourth century, Christianity had become an official Roman religion, and a new architectural form, the basilica, would soon become the standard throughout the Roman world. Aside from monumental basilicas, which dominated in every more or less urbanised centre, smaller church edifices were also erected in areas that were more isolated, geographically, from their political and religious centres. The number and variety of sacral architecture and objects of a religious character devoted to liturgical practice, as well as objects of a profane nature with clear Christian features that are represented both in larger urban structures and in fortifications on the Middle Danube Limes, indicate the existence of a well organised Christian church and an already developed form of Christian life in these areas in the period from the 4th to the beginning of the
7th century
Drachmae from Lycia, Amisus and Caesarea Mints in Serbian and European coin hoards (an update)
Eight silver coin hoards from the territory of present-day Serbia (the province of Upper Moesia, and parts of the provinces of Lower Pannonia and Dalmatia) also contain 13 drachmae of the Asia Minor mints of Lycia, Amisus and Caesarea (Cappadocia). Eight drachmae belong to the mint of Lycia, four were issued by the mint of Amisus and only one was coined in Caesarea.
The aim of the paper is to supplement the otherwise excellent article by Barbara Zając from 2015 on the drachma finds of the aforementioned mints in European coin hoards. In addition, the analysis will deal with the incidence of certain issuers of coins according to mints and an attempt will be made to compare the reverse types of drachmae of each mint (where the types are known) within certain reigns in order to determine whether there are some patterns in their distribution within European hoards
Vessels with the handle above the opening from Lower Pannonia and Upper Moesia
In this paper, we will try to determine the function of the specific vessels that have a handle above the opening. Such
containers are found in several sites on limes, e.g. Teutoburgium and Viminacium, and in urban and rural sites. During the
research of Viminacium, pots with handles that cross the upper side of the rim are found at several locations. In addition to
the settlement layers, they are most numerous in the amphitheatre. We distinguish three types of such pots. All are made
of medium refined clay in grey or red color. Their outer surface is polished, in the case of grey specimens, and in the case
of red ones, it is coated with tones of red slip. Two vessels are found in a well of a rural site (Liskovac near Cibalae). The
context of the finds in Viminacium date to 2/3 of the 3rd century, while the context from Liskovac is dated to the end of 1st CE
to the beginning of the 2nd CE. The origin of the form can be found in the prehistoric and Hellenistic world, but its function is
jet to be established.. The most interesting thing about them is that a great number of them were found in wells, which could
mean to us that they could be used to extract water. Using the experiment, data from the excavations, literary sources and
ethnographic data, we are going to try to propose the function of those vessel
Lime Mortars Containing Clays for the Conservation of the Danube Limes
This paper will present the composition of historical mortars and the technology of their production, as well as the work on the creation of compatible mortar mixtures for the conservation of the Danube Limes in Serbia. Mixtures with the addition of domestic clay used for traditional brick manufacture, domestic and imported kaolin clays, imported and laboratory-produced metakaolin as well as zeolite of domestic origin, were prepared and tested, and later applied to experimental masonry structures. The potential long-term success of the application of lime mortar mixtures containing mechanically or thermally activated different types of domestic clays will be of exceptional importance for conservation in Serbia
