    The genetic history of the Southern Arc : a bridge between West Asia and Europe

    By sequencing 727 ancient individuals from the Southern Arc (Anatolia and its neighbors in Southeastern Europe and West Asia) over 10,000 years, we contextualize its Chalcolithic period and Bronze Age (about 5000 to 1000 BCE), when extensive gene flow entangled it with the Eurasian steppe. Two streams of migration transmitted Caucasus and Anatolian/Levantine ancestry northward, and the Yamnaya pastoralists, formed on the steppe, then spread southward into the Balkans and across the Caucasus into Armenia, where they left numerous patrilineal descendants. Anatolia was transformed by intra–West Asian gene flow, with negligible impact of the later Yamnaya migrations. This contrasts with all other regions where Indo-European languages were spoken, suggesting that the homeland of the Indo-Anatolian language family was in West Asia, with only secondary dispersals of non-Anatolian Indo-Europeans from the steppe

    Les fouilles franco-yougoslaves dirigées conjointement par Noël Duval (1929-2018) et Vladislav Popovic (1930-1999), d’abord à Sirmium de 1973 à 1978, puis à Caričin Grad de 1978 à 1991, demeurent encore aujourd’hui un modèle de collaboration archéologique internationale. Du fait de leur impressionnant bilan, les deux missions participèrent pleinement à la mise en valeur du patrimoine romain sur le territoire de l’actuelle Serbie, de même qu’à la démonstration de l’intérêt de la période que l’on qualifie aujourd’hui d’Antiquité tardive. Dédié à la mémoire des deux grandes figures susmentionnées, le présent ouvrage unit les découvertes restées inédites de l’exploration franco-yougoslave de la basilique Saint-Irénée de Sirmium, menée entre 1976 et 1977, avec celles faites plus récemment, soit en 2002 et en 2016, à l’occasion des travaux conduits sur le site de la nécropole environnante de cette église paléochrétienne, par l’équipe de l’Institut archéologique de Belgrade. Les résultats obtenus par de véritables « pères fondateurs » se retrouvent donc ici associés à ceux de générations qui ont été formées dans la suite directe des importantes avancées scientiques, non seulement en termes de données, mais aussi de méthodologie, dont ils furent à l’origine.La basilique Saint- Irénée de Sirmium et sa nécropole (Édité par I.     The dust that a building is transformed into when it becomes a ruin holds precious traces of the past. The hands of an archaeologist will search through it patiently, and find a necklace bead of a woman that lived in it. The hands of an architect will virtually transform the dust into a mortar, brick, or stone. The first profession sees through the unbuilt. The second one builds from it. However, both perform their work by communicating with the sciences. Throughout history, various components were chosen, measured, and mixed into one of the most complex building composites ever - mortar, whose re-creation is of invaluable importance for architectural conservation. Geologists and chemists will best tell us about its composition. However, sometimes, while excavating a ruined wall, an archaeologist finds a mortar trowel, accidentally left by the past builder. Is this a more valuable trace for revealing the creation of a wall than the binder/aggregate ratio of the mortar used? Can we pick it up and imagine the hands that combined colourful aggregate grains with the earth, gypsum, lime, or cement

    Interpretation of Archaeological Heritage – Wishes and Possibilities

    Over the past few decades the interpretation of cultural heritage has gained importance. The development of new technologies rose exponentially, opening a row of different possibilities for interpretation, both visual and nar rative. A special place in interpreting cultural heritage is taken by archaeologi cal open-air museums and archaeological parks. Over the past few decades and in entire Europe, dozens of them have been established. In them, a special kind of interpretation and/or presentation of cultural heritage takes place, intended both for the broad public and experts. It is at the same time visual and narrative. Basically, in such parks, especially this specific kind of knowledge transfer is be ing developed, based on personal and hands-on experience. Although this kind of interpretation is especially interesting to the younger population, it is of extreme importance exactly for experts, archaeologists, and archaeology students. In such a way, it is easier for them to comprehend man in the past and his relation to the surrounding, materials he used, algorithms he applied, etc. Archaeological open air museums and archaeological parks are usually made in such a manner that they can fit into the already existing or specially designed landscape. At the same time, they offer an ideal surrounding for the activities mentioned above. In this paper, the authors will describe a few archaeological parks and open-air museums, with special attention dedicated to the kinds of interpretations they offer and to their target groups

    In the first segment of this paper, the stages of development of the field documentation of the Institute of Archaeology in Belgrade were processed. Special attention was paid to the history of the collecting, recording and inventorying of field documentation materials, starting from the establishment of the aforementioned scientific institution up to the present day. In the process of the reconstruction of these elements, the greatest source of data is provided by work biographies and annual reports of previous associates who performed the work of keeping the documentation, as well as the archival material of the Institute of Archaeology, which is located in the State Archives of Serbia. In the final parts of the text, the current state of the documentation and the proposed plans with the main goals for the next period are discussed, along with the presentation of new proposals in the fields of systematisation, digitisation and consolidation

    Monetary circulation in the mining area Territoria metallorum – case study of the Timacum Minus site

    Timacum Minus continued as an administrative center of the Territoria metallorum mining area from the middle of the 2nd century until its destruction around the middle of the 5th century. Ever since its foundation at the end of the 1st century an urban settlement had developed around the military fort. The numismatic finds from Timacum Minus fall into two categories: coins from a stratigraphic context and stray finds. By comparing the two categories we propose to test the relevance of stray coin finds analysis when made on its own, the value of stray coins as a sample, and the difference in the circulation of the two categories of finds. The end goal is to determine the influence of socio-economic circumstances on the monetary circulation in this specifically organized area, given the multiple roles of the military stationed in mining areas, who both defended and administered the Territoria metalloru

    Neanderthals on the Lower Danube: Middle Palaeolithic evidence in the Danube Gorges of the Balkans

    The article presents evidence about the Middle Palaeolithic and Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition interval in the karst area of the Danube Gorges in the Lower Danube Basin. We review the extant data and present new evidence from two recently investigated sites found on the Serbian side of the Danube River - Tabula Traiana and Dubocka-Kozja caves. The two sites have yielded layers dating to both the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic and have been investigated by the application of modern standards of excavation and recovery along with a suite of state-of-the-art analytical procedures. The presentation focuses on micromorphological analyses of the caves' sediments, characterisation of cryptotephra, a suite of new radiometric dates (accelerator mass spectrometry and optically stimulated luminescence) as well as proteomics (zooarchaeology by mass spectrometry) and stable isotope data in discerning patterns of human occupation of these locales over the long term

    Our MoDeCo2000: Results Overview of the Scientific and Research Project

    Project Mortar Design for Conservation - Danube Roman Frontier 2000 Years after (MoDeCo2000) deals with mortars used from the 1st to the 6th century AD along the part of the Danube frontier that is situated in the territory of today's Serbia and whose monuments form the UNESCO tentative list “Frontier of the Roman Empire - Danube Limes in Serbia”. The mentioned territory was a provincial area in the Roman period, and the construction activities that happened in this part of the empire were not particularly interesting to the international scientific community dealing with Roman architecture. The aim of this project is to gain knowledge of ancient mortar technology in this area, to allow conclusions to be made about building activities, the exploitation and use of raw materials, as well as the everyday life of the people on the frontier. After interpreting the results obtained in laboratories of testing historical materials, the project is making compatible mixtures of mortars for the future conservation of the Limes monuments, using local raw materials, but also improving the properties of these mortars with different additions
