Chemical Analysis of Historical Mortars from the Roman Period in Serbia [poster]

    No full text
This work is part of the MoDeCo2000 project research concerning the historical mortars from the Roman period in today’s Serbia. It is focused on the chemical analysis of mortar samples selected from archaeological sites along the Danube River. The main compositional and technological features of the mortars were determined by chemical analyses with energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) with an HF-resistant introductory system

Following the Ancients - Conservation Mortars for the Danube Limes in Serbia

    No full text
Data obtained from the archaeological, architectural, and geological research with the thorough laboratory testing of Roman mortars sampled during the project Mortar Design for Conservation - Danube Roman Frontier 2000 Years after (MoDeCo2000) which deals with the part of the former Danube Limes in today’s Serbia, was used in the formulation of compatible conservation mixtures. The mixtures were based on available local raw materials whose presence was determined during the characterization of historical mortars, and traditional production technologies whose traces can often be identified through the analysis. Laboratory models included the use of quicklime and slaked lime, stone aggregate of different grain sizes, crushed stone of different origins, crushed and ground brick, and clay. The ratios between the raw materials were determined with the aim of getting their optimal mutual relationship and the highest possible level of compatibility of the new model with the historical sample

Characterization of Roman Mortars from Two Archeological Sites: Trajan's Bridge and Roman Castrum Diana, Karataš

    Get PDF
Historical mortars are composite materials made of binders and aggregates that were used in the construction of water tanks, Roman baths, mosaics, aqueducts, frescoes, etc. Due to the specific composition, Roman mortars are characterized by excellent strength and durability, as evidenced by numerous Roman buildings that have been preserved to this day. During the restoration and conservation of cultural heritage buildings, it is necessary to use compatible materials with appropriate physical, chemical, mechanical and aesthetic properties, which could be used for conservation of the original historical materials without compromising the durability and specificity of the analyzed building

Womens role within the regional networks of interactions – Case study Vajuga – Pesak

    Get PDF
The Early Iron Age necropolises in the territory of Serbia are few and significantly underresearched. Therefore, the discovery of the Vajuga — Pesak necropolis represented an important step towards the understanding of the mutual relations between the prehistoric communities of the Danube region and the Central Balkans during the Iron Age 1. By analysing certain details regarding the burial ritual and the material culture, especially fibulae as one of the most prominent elements of the female costume, we’ll try to indicate the possible directions of cultural influences in the aforementioned territory during the Iron Age 1. We will primarily consider female individuals, as the bearers of those influences within populations, the bearers that were always associated with certain ethnic markers.Zbornik Instituta za arheologiju = Serta instituti archaeologici ; knj. 1

La morte come liberazione (CIL III 10214 = CLE 1781): stele con un episodio della storia di Oreste dalla Pannonia Inferiore

    No full text
This paper offers a new iconographic reading of a fragment of a Roman funerary stele in marble from the village of Putinci, near Bassiane in Lower Pannonia. Today, the lower part of the funerary stele is preserved. The fragment consists of a metrical epitaph and a relief below it. On the relief are depicted two fighting figures and one building on the right side. Both the epitaph and the relief are partially preserved. The relief has been interpreted as Orestes killing Clytemnestra. Following a tipological and iconographic analysis and comparison with Roman sarcophagi as well as with funerary monuments from Noricum and Pannonia, it has been suggested that it is most likely a scene with Orestes and the Taurians beside the temple of Artemis. Based on this interpretation, the fragment could be understood as an example of funerary iconography that is completely compatible with Norico-Pannonian funerary arts. Based on a comparison with a group of funerary monuments of merchants with metrical epitaphs, it is possible to presume that this stele was erected for a well-to-do merchant too

    No full text
The contribution aims to present new research in Southeastern Serbia with a particular focus on the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age. A new collaboration of the Archaeological Institute in Belgrade and the Austrian Academy of Sciences initiated long-term investigations in the southern Morava Region with a focus on human activities and human-- environment interaction from the beginning of sedentism until the Metal Ages. The ongoing fieldwork at the site of Svinjarička Čuka near Leskovac revealed several systematically analyzed domestic features from Late Bronze and Early Iron Age in that region, which will be presented, along with several specifics regarding the existing narrative of the development of the Late Bronze Age in the region. This first outcome will be contextualized in the broader sense of the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age societies in Southeastern Serbia

A new type of Hellenistic coin from Ravna (Timacum Minus)?

    No full text
A coin was discovered as a chance find northeast of the Roman fort Timacum Minus, and, based on our knowledge so far, represents an unknown specimen in science. The obverse shows a male profile facing right, wearing a Corinthian helmet. On the reverse, in a laurel wreath, there is an inscription in Greek letters in two lines: C I [?]/ MωN, with a palm branch below. Sources say that the conflict between Alexander the Great and the Triballi led by King Syrmus took place in 335 BC near the former island of Peuce that used to exist in the Danube delta. In this battle, Alexander failed to destroy the Triballi, but forced the king Syrmus into a vassal relationship. Is it possible that the specimen found near Timacum Minus, located on the border of the then most powerful tribal community, is an example of the emissions of Syrmus?https://www.bg-numismatic-readings.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Book-of-Abstracts-QR.pd
