Timacum Minus as the Crossroad between the Danube and Morava Velley
The fortification and settlement of Timacum Minus was one of the first inland Roman centers of the
Moesia Superior province, founded in the 1st century AD, at the place of a pre-Roman settlement.
Its position in the Timok region, at the halfway from Danube to Morava Basin made it a crossroad from prehistory. During its long life, from the 1st to the mid-5rh century, Timacum Minus
has transformed from a military logistic center for Dacian wars, to archeometallurgical center of
mining territory and, finally, to castellum controlling the road along the Timok valley. It played a
role in romanization of Moesia Superior and later in defense of Dacia Ripensis and other inland
provinces (Dacia Mediterranea, Dardania) from “barbarian” invasions. Also, Timacum Minus played
an important role in economy of Upper Moesia, especially during the second half of 2nd-the 3rd
century, functioning as an administrative and metallurgical center of mining territory (Territoria
metallorum), that is supported with epigraphic and archaeological evidence. Finally, from the 2nd
to 4th century, Timacum Minus was an urban settlement with prominent population of the Roman
army veterans who belonged to the local elite. Baths, villas and temples (dedicated to Jupiter, Diana
and Mars) show its wealth and importance
Glamija – Rtkovo, New Consideration
Glamija - Rtkovo is one of the important archaeological sites on the lower course of the Danube in
Serbia. The discovered parts of architecture and movable finds offer the possibility for the analysis of archi tectural elements, used materials and mutual relationships of structures of older and younger fortifications,
as well as their dating. Also, with more detailed analysis, it is possible to draw certain conclusions and
principles on the basis of which a proposal for the ideal architectural reconstruction of the older fortification
could be made, as well as a comparison with similar fortifications in the immediate vicinity
The Rise of metallurgy in Eurasia tokom 2012-2013. godine.
Tracing prehistoric mines and quarries: preliminary results of the field survey of Rudnik area (central Serbia), campaign 2021.
Prehistoric communities exploited diverse sources of raw materials, from relatively small ones
up to large mines and quarries. However, tracing down in the archaeological record the exact
source of raw material exploitation is in certain occasions rather difficult – these sources may
have been completely destroyed and exhausted with later activities, they may have been comprising small, difficult to detect area, preserved archaeological traces may be too scarce to be detected, etc. Certain areas where the present-day geological data show that sources of raw materials are relatively abundant and particularly interesting for archaeological research. One of these areas is Rudnik mountain, the second major volcanic area in central Serbia, known for its richness and variety of raw materials used in the past. Abundant historical and archaeological record of Rudnik showed intensive exploitation of diverse ores in medieval and pre-modern times., as well as prehistoric exploitation of malachite, dated to the Bronze Age period. The site of Prljuša – Mali Šturac was discovered in the 1980s; research with the limited scope was then conducted and systematic research was initiated in 2011 and is still in progress. However, the settlements of the populations that exploited this mine are unknown. Furthermore, the area of Rudnik mountain and adjacent areas are also known for sources of diverse lithic raw materials. This is why the Archaeological Institute in Belgrade initiated systematic field reconnaissance with the main scope to search for sources of raw materials exploited in prehistory and associated settlements. In this poster will be presented the preliminary results of the 2021 field survey campaign. During the 2021 campaign, the areas of the municipalities of Kragujevac and Knić were extensively surveyed. Three modern quarries and their adjacent areas were researched, Ramaća, Rogojevac and Vučkovica, and limited traces of prehistoric activities were discovered in the relative vicinity. In: Ina Miloglav (ed.), Book of abstracts of 10th Scientific conference Methodology & Archaeometry, 1st - 3rd of December 2022, Zagreb, Croatia, (pp. 57). Natural Brick of Viminacium
Building activity in Viminacium, an important Roman legionary fortress and a city on the Danube in today’s Serbia, was influenced by its natural surroundings. They influenced the position and orientation of the first fortification, built in the 1st century AD, as well as the range of raw materials for the construction of buildings in all of Viminacium’s life phases. The first building material along with wood that Romans encountered after coming to the northern edge of the Stig Plain must have been red burnt soil created by coal combustion, whose source is only a few kilometres from the fortress. The first ramparts were constructed using blocks made of this material, called "crvenka" by the local people, which was used for building purposes in the wider area until relatively recently
Chemical Analysis of Historical Mortars from the Roman Period in Serbia
This work is part of the MoDeCo2000 project research concerning the historical mortars from the Roman period in today’s Serbia. It is focused on the chemical analysis of mortar samples selected from archaeological sites along the Danube River. The main compositional and technological features of the mortars were determined by chemical analyses with energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) with an HF resistant introductory system. The aim of this study is to present the analytical chemistry strategy used for the rapid and reliable characterisation of the relevant features of historical mortars

Roman and Late Roman Traffic Infrastructure on the Territory of Naissus
As a spot on an important Balkan route, the territory of Naissus had an entire net of main, magistral roads (viae publicae, viae militares), bridges, and also roads of municipal and regional importance. Our attempt is to summarize the archaeological and epigraphic data on the remains of Roman traffic infrastructure, discovered on the territory of the city (milestones, remains of bridges, roads). Special attention will be paid to the discovery of two pentagonal pillars of the potential Roman bridge in the Nišava riverbed. According to the preserved travelogues from the Late Middle Ages and the New Ages, the bridge most likely lasted for centuries, until the end of the 19th century
u prikazivanju ljudske figure i dekorativnih elemenata, gubljenje proporcije, horror
vacui i varijabilnost u tektonici i morfologiji nadgrobnih stela i cipusa.
Autochtonic elements in the culture of the eastern part of the roman
province of Dalmatia considers next elements: decorative motives on the grave
monuments, as are motive of rope and spiralae, jewllery of older prechistoric tradition,
and chains with the ivy lieaves as iterpretatio romana of some unknown native god
with the roman Dyonisos, and appereance on the grave monuments as are geometric
human figure and decorative elements, loosing of proportion and bad proportion
in the releief fields, horror vacui and imatation grave cippi on the grave stelae. All of
those appereances are visible in the culture of population of the eastern part of roman
province of Dalmatia in the period from II to beginning of IV century
A review of the study of human skeletal material from Viminacium
During the archaeological research of
Viminacium, around 14,000 graves have been unearthed
to date. One third of these are cremated
graves, while the rest are graves with inhumations,
in which over 20,000 skeletons were discovered.
With anthropological analyses and modern research
methods, such as the analysis of ancient
DNA, it has been shown that the Viminacium
inhabitants were mostly of autochthonous origin,
but that there were also foreigners, mostly
from Anatolia. A small percentage of inhabitants
originated from the eastern African regions, and
middle and western Europe (Cat. nos. 1–12).1 This
correlates to previous anthropological research
that proved the existence of at least seven anthropological
type
