Bone technology in the Late Neolithic Vinča culture: Manufacturing pointed tools

    Get PDF
The bone industry of the Late Neolithic / Early Eneolithic Vinča culture was rich and diverse; different osseous raw materials (diverse skeletal elements) were used for the production of everyday items, weapons and ornaments. The selection of raw materials was usually strict – certain skeletal elements were consistently used for specific artefact types, often depending on their physical properties. The manufacturing techniques display a certain level of standardisation, in particular, the most common tool type, medium-sized pointed tools (awls), was generally produced by using the same manufacturing techniques and resulting in more or less standardised products. In this paper, an overview will be provided of manufacturing techniques used for the production of pointed tools from several Vinča culture sites: Vitkovo, Pločnik and Vinča – Belo Brdo, reconstruction of the chaîne opératoire, the morphological features of the subtypes and variants, and their overall cultural and economic importance will be discussed.[https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S104061822300071X?via%3Dihub

Teeth, as the strongest component in the human body, are more resistant to decomposition and taphonomic factors compared to other bone material. The analysis of dental material from an archaeological context provides an abundance of information about the health of the analysed individual, but also of the entire population, about similarities and differences in the type and manner of nutrition, as well as differences in relation to individual age, gender, social status, both within one population and between two or more populations, through different periods. This paper will present data on the dental health of the population buried at the Late Antique necropolis of Begov Most – Staničenje (vicinity of Pirot). During the research in 2014 and 2015, 132 grave units were identified. A total of 128 skeletons were available for analysis, out of which 92 individuals had preserved dental material (1448 deciduous and permanent teeth). A special attention was given to the frequency of caries, ante mortem tooth loss, calculus and periapical abscess, in the entire population, as well as the difference between the age and sex categories. The results showed that in almost all of the examined categories, female individuals had the highest frequency of dental diseases, which coincides with the results obtained in other parts of the Roman Empire, as well as in other historical periods

The legionary fort in Viminacium was most likely established at the beginning of the 1st century CE, as the Romans reached this part of the Danube Valley. It seems that organising the military on the Danube occurred simultaneously with the establishment of the province of Moesia, in the year 15 CE. The Romans’ tendency to establish legionary forts on the Danube and to obtain a border that would be more secure was motivated by the need to protect the Roman provinces in the south of the Balkans from plunderers from the north. Subordinating free tribes that used to dwell between the province of Macedonia and the Danube occurred over the three final decades of the 1st century BCE and ended with a gradual movement of legions from Macedonia towards the north and the establishment the province of Moesia. This stretched from the river Sava to the Black Sea. It soon became apparent that the province was too big to be effectively controlled and, as a result, in the year 86 CE, it was divided into two parts: Upper and Lower Moesia

Danube limes in Serbia: on the way to a UNESCO World heritage site – problems, challenges and solutions

    Get PDF
Since 1987, when the first part of the Roman Limes was inscribed to the UNESCO List of World Heritage, there has been an idea to unite this system, stretching over 5,000 km across the Roman provinces in Europe, the Near East and North Africa, into one big site – Frontiers of the Roman Empire (Ployer, Polak and Schmidt 2017). Apart from Hadrian’s and Antonine’s wall, the Lower Germanic, the Upper German-Raetian Limes and the western part of the Danube Limes have also been inscribed to this list so far. The Danube Limes was divided into two segments – western and eastern, with the parts in Germany, Slovakia and Austria already inscribed. The nomination of the eastern part of the Danube Limes is a joint project of four countries – Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria. The Limes section in Serbia is 450 km long. Archaeological prospection and excavations have confirmed the existence of approximately 80 sites, 10 in the province of Pannonia Inferior and 70 in Moesia Superior (Korać et al. 2014). For the revised Tentative List, 35 sites were selected (Tentative List).1st International Conference with Workshop. Science for Conservation of the Danube Limes. Interpretation of Cultural Heritage and Formal Education: ‘’TRAME’’ Erasmus+ Project Serbia Participation

    Get PDF
Today, the valorization of cultural heritage is seen as a complex process, which is primarily based on an interdisciplinary approach, greatly surpassing the known concepts of protection, presentation or interpretation. Certainly, the foundations of adequate valorization of cultural heritage should primarily be shaped by knowledge about it, and formal education must necessarily be seen as one of the basic carriers of information and the initial phase of continuous work on developing awareness of the importance of heritage. Therefore, the first valuation of heritage is inextricably linked to the knowledge gained in schools, at the first place - primary, and more importantly in the secondary. From all the above, it follows that it is necessary to make cultural, and especially archaeological heritage, as accessible as possible for the educational system through an appropriate methodological approach and modern tools, as well as examples of good practice, whether on an international, national or local level. On the other hand, in order to achieve this kind of synergy, the interpretation of cultural heritage in all three mentioned segments plays a very important role. It enables the development of teaching methodologies through non-formal learning and the application of practical knowledge formed through the use of various educational tools, while through examples of good practice it develops a sense of acceptance (adoption) and evaluation of heritage in local environments. This type of dialogue between formal education and interpretation of cultural heritage is one of the topics researched by the TRAME project - Tracce di memoria from the Erasmus + program, and on this occasion the main results of the project will be presented

Chemical analysis of historical mortars from the Roman period in Serbia

    Get PDF
This work is part of the MoDeCo2000 project research concerning the historical mortars from the Roman period in today’s Serbia. It is focused on the chemical analysis of mortar samples selected from archaeological sites along the Danube River. The main compositional and technological features of the mortars were determined by chemical analyses with energydispersive x-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) with an HF resistant introductory system. The aim of this study is to present the analytical chemistry strategy used for the rapid and reliable characterisation of the relevant features of historical mortars

Numismatic and Archaeological Evidence of Supra-Regional Trade in the Southern Parts of the Late Avar State

    Get PDF
This article will bring together the archaeological finds from Syrmia and southern Bačka, mostly numismatic, which apparently testify to the supraregional trade that was taking place in the southern parts of the Late Avar state: Abbasid coins from Sirmium, Zemun, Čelarevo, Futog, and Šišatovci, as well as a well-known hoard from Donji Petrovci (also containing nine dinars), and an eighth-century solidus from Maglić. In doing so, it will build upon the studies of, first of all, Michael McCormick, Falko Daim, and Péter Somogyi. These finds have been mistakenly connected with migrations, or left without interpretation; only occasionally some of them were described as pointing to inter-ethnic trade relations. On the other hand, the belt-set from Zemun, bearing human representations in a Late Roman style, may be seen as indicative of connections between the northern Mediterranean region and the southern parts of the Khaganate.Zbornik radova s međunarodnog znanstvenog skupa održanog u Vinkovcima 2020. godine / Proceedings of the international scientific conference held in Vinkovci 2020.
