Neolithic multiculturalism: zones of contact of various communities
Although the term „archaeological culture“ has been criticised from different viewpoints in past several decades, it is still a useful analytical tool (however, must be used with caution) to discern and label prehistoric communities that share similar or identical material culture. Micro-regions where traces of communities ascribed to different contemporaneous cultures are particularly interesting for studying cultural contacts and cultural changes in the past. One of such regions is south-eastern Baranja region in present-day eastern Croatia, where communities of Vinča, Sopot and Lengyel culture lived in the 5th millennium BC. Although this area was long regarded as being populated by Sopot culture communities, recent archaeological researches showed an important presence of Lengyel culture communities in this area. In this paper will be presented two Late Neolithic sites situated in vicinity of Beli Manastir: Kneževi Vinogradi, with archaeological remains attributed to the Sopot and Vinča cultures, and Kotlina, with archaeological remains attributed to the Lengyel culture. At the site of Kneževi Vinogradi, small-scale rescue excavations revealed several structures from Late Neolithic, and the material culture with traits of both Sopot and Vinča cultures. Recent systematic researches at the site of Kotlina revealed a large Lengyel culture site, with habitation structures, burials, and rich material culture. Particularly interesting is the presence of artefacts from exotic raw materials, such as obsidian and marine mollusc shells, showing that Kotlina was part of large trade and exchange network. The habitation patterns, subsistence and economy, and material culture from these two sites will be analysed, as well as their possible place within a larger network of Late Neolithic communities in the region
New finds of pechiera fibulae in the Iron Gates region
Throughout his successful career, Petar Popović dedicated more than 10 years to the research of
the Bronze and Iron Age settlements and necropolises in the Iron Gates region. His extensive knowledge and field experience, as well as long-lasting friendships with colleagues from the National Museum in Belgrade, have all contributed to the greater degree of research at the site of Konopište in Mala Vrbica near Kladovo. The renewed excavations at the site were initiated by A. Đorđević, curator of the National Museum in Belgrade, back in 2015. The excavations resulted in new finds of the so-called violin-bow fibulae (Violinbogenfibeln), or the Peschiera type of fibulae, which represent a prominent piece of the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age attire. New insight into the funeral ritual and the double-natured function of Peschiera fibulae are the focus of this pape
Istraživanja, restauracija i revitalizacija kompleksa Sahat i Barokne kapije Beogradske tvrđave u 2020. godini
Rad donosi rezultate ispitivanja otkrivenih ostataka arhitekture i arheološki istraženjih površina tokom 2020. godine
Bird bone artefact from the Late Eneolithic / Early Bronze Age site of Zók (Hungary)
Bird bones were rarely used for production of artefacts, due to various reasons – they were much smaller and thinner than bones of mammals usually selected for tool production; they also have specific shapes and fine structure, inadequate for the majority of common artefact types. They were occasionally used for some specific objects, such as flutes, pipes, needle cases, amulets, etc. When it comes to the Eneolithic and Early Bronze Age periods in south-eastern Europe, bird bone artefacts are rare; only few have been discovered thus far. In this paper, we will present one additional finding of a bird bone artefact, from the site of Zók–Gradina, situated in present-day Hungary. Excavations carried out in 1920 by the National Museum in Belgrade revealed a multi-period site, with major parts of the stratigraphic sequence belonging to the Late Eneolithic / Early Bronze Age Vučedol culture (2900–2500/2400 BC). Vučedol layers yielded relatively large quantities of worked bone, including one artefact produced from a bird bone, that will be presented here. The object in question was produced from the right radius of a Cygnus sp.; it is in the shape of an elongated tube; carefully cut at both ends. The function of this item is uncertain – it may have served as some sound-producing instrument (flute), or it was some sort of a handle or needle case.
It is interesting to note that bird representations, in particular ornithomorphic vessels, are among the specific traits of the Vučedol culture; therefore, the choice of a bird bone for the production of this artefact may have had a certain symbolic significance as well.[https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/oa.3209
The period of religious turmoil within the Roman Empire, in the 4th and 5th centuries, contributed that new pagan temples were being less and less erected, while, according to the ancient written sources, their dismantling was more and more common. This situation urged Roman Emperors to try to regulate through legal acts the society’s attitude towards pagan temples within the Empire. The collection of regulations Codex Theodosianus is the most eloquent testimony of such legal practice until the 5th century. However, since the emperors rely more and more on the increasingly pronounced power of the Christian church, their relationship, even through legal acts, is characterized by great caution towards addressing the afore-mentioned community. Certain articles of the law are often characterized by ambivalence regarding the preservation of temples. However, in the period of late antiquity, neither the emperors nor their subjects were strict observers of their laws, but the application of laws on the protection of pagan temples often depended on local conditions and political-religious ties with the court
Aspects of technology and craft production in the Late Neolithic : the case study of the settlement at Vinča – Belo Brdo
Technological changes that occurred during the Neolithic period had the most lasting
and the most far-reaching consequences upon human societies. They brought changes in
subsistence and economy, and along with them new tasks, new activities, new needs, and,
eventually, they led to occupational specialisation and modern organisation of societies.
The site of Vinča–Belo Brdo is one of the most extraordinary sites of the Vinča culture. It is
among the largest Vinča culture settlements and the one with the longest occupation, which left
an impressive 9m-thick cultural layer. Furthermore, the material culture recovered here stands
out from the majority of other Vinča settlements by its quantity, quality and diversity. This
suggests that the settlement at Vinča had a special place within the economic organisation of
the Vinča culture and there is even some evidence that this was a centre of sorts for craft
production and trade.
In this paper, we will examine some of the aspects of technology and craft production at the
Vinča settlement, with special focus on technologies for lithic and osseous raw materials, as well
as indirect evidence on perishable technologies
