Lost and Found: Animal Management Throughout the Roman and the Late Antique Periods Within the Settlement(s) Under the Modern City of Čačak (Western Serbia)
Even though archaeozoology of the Roman and the Late Antique periods is a young discipline that has gained momentum in Serbia in recent decades, there is still modest information originating from the area of Western Serbia. So far, the data from the archaeological site Jerinin grad – Brangović has been published (Kukić, Mladenović 2014). However, in the last two years, analyses of archaeofaunal material from the area of present-day Čačak, which includes three sites/locations – Courtyard of the Gymnasium, Courtyard of the National Museum, and Courtyard of the Church of the Ascension of the Holy Virgin – dating back to the Roman and Late Antique periods, have gotten underway. This paper aims to provide an insight into animal management within the same landscape at three different locations through time by comparing taxa ratios, body part profiles, age and sex data, pathological changes, as well as butchery mark patterns between various sites/locations to reveal plausible diachronic and contextual differences in the strategies of animal exploitation
Bahla ware from Central Oman: Petrological and chemical information of bodies, chemical information of glazes
This is a dataset coming from the analysis of 32 Bahla ware sherds collected in archaeological activities (survey and excavation) in Central Oman, with an extended chronology of 15 to 20th centuries. The dataset includes petrographic analysis of ceramic bodies and glazes (microphotographs and fabric descriptions), WD-XRF chemical analysis of bodies (table with raw chemical data) and SEM-EDS analysis of ceramic bodies and glazes (tables with processed data, images)
Loom weights and weaving craft in Viminacium
Textiles were invaluable in most past societies and were widely used, from clothing to other everyday items. An increase in the textile production was recorded in the Roman period, when fabrics were made not only in households, but also in numerous workshops, in order to meet the needs. Fabric was usually produced on a vertical loom with ceramic weights used for increasing the firmness of the thread and fabric. Since other parts of the loom were made of perishable materials, loom weights are the only remaining evidence of weaving in archaeological record.
In the territory of ancient Viminacium, loom weights were not only found in the settlement, but
also in necropoles. This paper analyzes forms, ornamentation and chronology of ceramic loom
weights from Viminacium, as well as their context of discovery. The results shed light on the local
textile production and the use of the vertical loom, and propose locations of potential workshops.
This kind of analysis is all the more significant because loom weights are not a particularly popular
type of finds, and as such have not been of greater interest to researchers so far
Viminacium at the Crossroads of the Roman Empire – research of the necropolis
Archaeological excavations of the Viminacium necropolis yielded over 14,000 graves with more
than 40,000 archaeological artifacts. The greatest number of burials belongs to the period from the
end of the 1st to the 4th century. The contemporary existence of cremations and inhumations defines the necropolis as bi-ritual. Both rites were applied simultaneously for a longer period. Cremation was the prevailing ritual during the 2nd and partly during the 3rd century, while inhumation, present already from the 1st century, became the dominant rite by the end of the 3rd century. The most common grave forms with cremation are simple and two-levelled pits with red and grey burnt walls. Considering graves with inhumation the most common are burials in plain pits while those in brick structures and in wooden or lead coffins are represented in a smaller percentage. However, a great number of tombs were built of brick produced in a craft center at the site itself. Interdisciplinary research during this millennium has led to new and surprising findings. Not just new methods in anthropology (strontium and DNA analysis) in attempts to identify the origins of the people buried in the Viminacium cemetery which were based on archaeological excavation, grave inscriptions, and historical sources, but application of physicochemical analysis of the material used in the funeral rituals (grave inventory, building material for graves, pigments of wall paintings) sheds new light on the understanding of the population of the Roman Viminacium. According to them, the anthropological structure of the population shows extreme heterogeneity. People from all parts of the empire are apparently present, but whether it is a civilian or a military population or even a combination of the two remains is an open question. It proves that Viminacium, besides being the capital of the Roman province Moesia Superior, as the significant military stronghold where the Roman legion Legio VII Claudia Pia Fidelis was stationed, was a meeting place of Eastern and Western cultures
Location of the amphitheatre in Viminacium
This paper deals with the amphitheatres and their locations within the military and urban centres on the outskirts of the Roman world. Viminacium is used as a case study for this research. It is located in Serbia, near the confluence of the rivers Mlava and Danube. Initially, it was a legionary fortress. Next to the fortress a settlement grew and became the capital of the province of Moesia Superior, and later to the province of Moesia Prima
A medieval burial from the site of Supska: an anthropological and contextual analysis of the skeletal remains from grave 1
In 1956, the Institute of Archaeology and the National Museum in Belgrade
carried out excavations at the site of Supska, near Ćuprija, in Central Serbia. Based on
the material culture findings, the site is mostly known as a Late Neolithic one; however,
archaeological findings from other periods were discovered too. In the 1956 excavations,
the cultural layers, and archaeological features with the Vinča culture archaeological
materials were examined, as well as one grave, marked as Grave 1. The results of
this excavation have been previously published in one monograph; however, an anthropological
analysis of the individual found in Grave 1 has not been conducted before.
In this paper, we present the results of contextual, bioanthropological, stable isotopes
and C14 analyses of human skeletal remains found in Grave 1. The results showed that
a young adult, who had experienced nonspecific metabolic stress during childhood,
as evidenced by traces of linear enamel hypoplasia and porotic hyperostosis, was buried
in this grave. AMS date revealed that this individual lived between 1280–1390 cal.AD, while the results of the stable isotope analyses suggested that it had mixed diet
based on C4 plants (such as millet) and/or C3
plants, with larger amounts of animal
protein, possible deriving from freshwater fish
