Message on the pot: Sgraffito pottery decoration and group identities in the medieval Balkans
The meaning of decoration has undoubtedly represented one of the
central issues of archaeology since its formative years. It is equally important
in pottery studies. The archaeological approach to the classification
of decoration, exemplified in the seminal work of Anna Shepard (1956:
255–305), included formal, technical, decorative, and symbolic indicators,
thus emphasizing lines of analysis of decoration and a broad platform of
interpretation. Over time, the interpretation of designs has been considered
from different perspectives, among which the following stand out as
constantly current: (relative) chronology, technology, cultural context, and
symbolism. All of the above, and more, covered by the term (decorative)
style, is are part of a complex information exchange process that ultimately
leads to the identification of social groups and the determination of their

From the remains of the walls to the defence system of the Viminacium legionary fortress
Viminacium was a legionary fortress on the Danubian limes, within the provinces of Moesia Superior and Moesia Prima in the later period. It was the home of the Legio VII Claudia for most of its history. This paper deals with the remains of the defence system of the fortress. Geophysical surveys and aerial prospection preceded the archaeological excavations of the fortress that were started in 2016 and are currently ongoing. Excavations focused mainly on the defensive curtain walls, gateways, towers and ditches, but they also included the wider area of the principia and the north-western part of the fortress. Recent archaeological research revealed the existence of two main construction phases that date back to the last decades of the 1st century and to the first half of the 2nd century, as well as layers and features from the late Roman period. Based on the above data, it is possible to determine the layout of the fortress. The aim of the article is to explain the way the parts of the defence system were constructed in the different phases. Using the mentioned information, it is able to reconstruct the appearance of the defences of the legionary fortress of Viminacium
Landscape and its Traces in Roman Mortars of the Danube Limes in Serbia
The research within the project Mortar Design for Conservation - Roman Danube Frontier 2000 Years After (MoDeCo2000), dealing with Roman buildings in Serbia situated along the former Danube Limes was carried out using data from archaeological, architectural, and geological contexts, combined with mineralogical, chemical and material science research. The aim of the research is to reveal unknown data on ancient provincial construction, but also to contribute to future conservation processes, offering a database of historic mortars and raw materials used at the mentioned territory during the centuries. The research has confirmed the well-known unwritten rule of using local materials in historical constructions. The unique landscape around the Viminacium Archaeological Park with the remains of structures dating to ancient, Early Byzantine, and medieval periods, is an area where four archaeological sites, with nine buildings and forty-two different mortars, were examined, making it an ideal case study for this paper
Born Again: Multiple Biographies of Ground and Abrasive Stone Tools in the Neolithic of Serbia
Ground and abrasive stone tools had a long, dynamic and complex life during which they could repeatedly pass through different segments of the operational chain until their final disposal. Those tools would wear out slowly and could be used for a long time with constant renewal. Even after being damaged, they would start a new life cycle through various recycling processes or in a secondary context. The aim of this paper is to consider the transformative processes within the ground and abrasive stone industry in the Neolithic of Serbia and clarify their use in terms of maintenance, secondary use, and recycling, as well as to show the most frequent examples of such technological practices. The focus is primarily on tools for everyday use and the ways in which they were rerouted through various segments of the operational chain

Changes in material Culture between the Late Neolithic and the Early Eneolithic in the Central Balkans: A Case Study of Marjansko Brdo
During the spring of 2023, the Institute of Archaeology in Belgrade excavated the
site of Marjansko brdo in the village of Majilovac near Veliko Gradište, on the Danubes'
terrace. This multilayered site was continuously settled from the Neolithic to the Roman
time. Besides Early Vinča Neolithic houses, several pits dated between the 47th and the
44th century calBCA were recorded. The ceramic inventory of the pits represents the evolution
of the Late Neolithic pottery into the Early Eneolithic pottery. Interestingly, traces
of malachite, azurite, and copper finds, as well as traces of metallurgy, were discovered
in almost all of the discussed structures.
The analysis of pottery from the Late Neolithic and the Early Eneolithic structures
indicates that no significant changes in pottery forms and ornamentation occurred within
the given period of circa 350 years
