Antler technology in the Late Eneolithic / Early Bronze Age Vučedol culture
Vučedol culture is a Late Eneolithic / Early Bronze Age cultural complex that occupied the area of the southern Carpathian basin, in present-day Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary and in later phases it was widespread even in Austria, Slovakia and Slovenia. The Vučedol culture is characterised by the rich and diverse material culture, including extraordinary ceramic vessels and metal objects. Bone industry, although abundant, is still insufficiently explored. The assemblages from excavations carried out in the late 19th–early 20th century from the sites of Vučedol, Sarvaš–Gradac and Zók provided some very interesting results regarding the use of osseous raw materials. Particularly rich are items made from antler, predominantly red deer antler, hence, manufacturing procedures, typological repertoire, as well as the place of the antler industry within the everyday activities of the Vučedol culture communities will be analysed in this paper. Predominant techno-types are artefacts made from basal and beam segments with a cutting edge at the distal end, or double-sided – the basal part used as a percussion tool and the distal end modified into a cutting edge. Tines were mainly modified into some sort of smaller chisels and wedges. Toggle harpoons represent the most carefully made objects, produced through several stages, finalised by scraping and burnishing. Also, peculiar small elongated artefacts discovered at Zók, in a shape of short rods, should be mentioned, some with incised decoration – zig-zag and transversal parallel lines. These objects do not have analogies, and their function is not certain; they were most likely some sort of decorative items.
These assemblages also include large amounts of manufacturing debris, and it is very interesting to note that these items show evidence of being processed with metal tools, as this is the earliest evidence of the use of metal tools in the bone industry of the region. The antler industry was well developed, production can be characterised as relatively large-scale, and the working areas of workshops were present at all three tell sites, thus pointing to the possibility of a certain level of craft specialisation
Vladimir R. Petković and Stobi
In the preceding chapters, one can find a detailed account of the life’s path of Vladimir R. Petković – a keeper of Serbian medieval heritage. He conscientiously served in high positions, mindful of the trust placed in him at the very beginning of his career, when he was given the opportunity to study abroad. His future endeavours depended on a thorough education in the field of medieval
Byzantine culture. Fortunately, his scholarly inquisitiveness, coupled with pronounced erudition, extended even beyond this broad scope, driving Petković to study the past preceding the main area of his scholarly interest, as well. It is worth pointing out that he earned his doctoral degree on a topic from early Christian art history, and this predilection was to flourish into a very important contribution to the local studies of Roman and Late Roman monuments
Obsidian in the Copper and Bronze Age Central Balkans: tracing long-distance exchange networks through pXRF analysis
Obsidian artifacts in the central Balkans, sourced from the Carpathians and the Aegean island of Melos, played a significant role in the Neolithic, particularly within the Vinča culture, with most studies focusing on Carpathian sources. However, post-Neolithic obsidian exchange networks remain largely unexamined due to the lack of provenance studies in the central Balkans. Sparse obsidian artifacts from Early Copper and Bronze Age sites in southern and central Serbia suggest the continuation of these networks amidst the predominant use of local materials such as flint and chert. The FLOW project (‘Interactions-Transmission-Transformation: Long-distance connections in Copper and Bronze Age Central Balkans’) undertakes the first provenance analyses of obsidian samples from well-dated sites, including Velika Humska Čuka, Bubanj, and Kalenić Livade. This study presents the initial results from these analyses, focusing on the comparison between two pXRF devices— Olympus Delta X and Bruker Tracer 5—used to chemically trace the origins of the obsidian artifacts from the late 5th and 4th millennia BC. A reference collection comprising three distinct Carpathian sources, along with the Aegean outcrops at the island of Melos, and Italian sources of Lipari and Monte Arci, was employed for comparative purposes. Both devices show distinct strengths and limitations, with reliable results from elements such as Fe, Rb, and Zr. The comparative analysis reveals that while both datasets differentiate between Carpathian and Aegean sources, minor discrepancies in clustering and concentration values suggest potential measurement mode influences. This contribution addresses the significance of these findings for archaeological interpretations and outlines future steps to resolve data consistency challenges in the study of long-distance exchange in late prehistory
A contribution to the study of the sacral topography of medieval Belgrade – archaeological and geophysical perspectives
Повратак изучавању топографије Београдске тврђаве, с аспекта археолошких и геофизичких
истраживања, донео је низ вредних детаља у вези са структуром и хронологијом здања унутар просторне целине Доњег града. У светлу новодобијених прецизних основа објеката, уз подсећање на индикативне писане изворе, преиспитана је расположива ликовна и археолошка грађа. Поред потврде претпостављене позиције митрополијске Цркве Успења Богородице, нарочити помак се исказује у сагледавању фрањевачког самостана Св. Марије. На основу одлика тлоцрта, разматра се могуће време заснивања фрањевачке цркве и самостанског комплекса у раздобље касног 13. или раног 14. века, недуго након првог помена присуства њихове заједнице у Београду. Подигнут у непосредној близини, караван-сарај је дефинисан као зграда масивног архитектонског склопа, с атријумским двориштем око којег су низови релативно пространих соба. Његови остаци су делом негирани изградњом аустријске пешадијске касарне (1723–1739), док је касније, након 1740.
године, над остацима обе волуминозне зграде подигнута Хасан-пашина џамија.Returning to the studies of the topography of the Belgrade Fortress from the perspective of archaeological and geophysical research unveiled a number of valuable insights regarding the structure and chronology of constructions within the spatial unit of the Lower Town. In the light of the newly obtained precise layouts of the objects, and harking back to the indicative narrative sources, a reexamination of the available artistic and archaeological material was undertaken. In addition to the confirmation of the presumed position of the Metropolitan Church of the Assumption, new light is shed on the siting of the Franciscan monastery of St. Mary. Based on the features of the floor plan, a possible period of establishment of the Franciscan church and monastery complex in the late 13th or early 14th century, shortly after the first mention of the presence of their community in Belgrade, is considered. Erected in its immediate vicinity was a caravanserai, a building of massive architectural proportions, with an atrium courtyard surrounded by rows of relatively spacious rooms. Its remains were partly destroyed by the construction of infantry barracks by the Austrians (1723–1739), while later, after 1740, Hasan Pasha’s mosque was built over the remains of both voluminous buildings
Inverted Education or How to Effectively Communicate Cultural Heritage to Young Generations: Case Study of the Cooltour Project in Serbia
The present state of approach towards cultural heritage requires innovative preservation strategies
that engage younger generations. The COOLTOUR project – Millennials for Cultural Heritage –
addresses this by involving millennials in cultural heritage discussions and using digital platforms
for broader visibility. Through its platform, COOLTOUR provided a space for young people to create,
share, and promote cultural values, highlighting heritage sites within their networks. Partnering with
over 90 millennials in Serbia, the project achieved notable results, including an international mobility
event at Viminacium Archaeological Park with 60 students from six European countries. This hands-on
experience highlighted archaeology as a tool for intergenerational knowledge transfer.
Knowledge gathered throughout the COOLTOUR project contributed to the development of
guidelines and a toolkit to help heritage managers engage millennials with the use of technology and
online communication. The resource offers tools for creating workshops, managing social media, and
utilising AI. It also explores how to navigate the collaborative process between Digital Natives and
Digital Immigrants to achieve the best outcomes for cultural heritage communication and valorisation.
This paper outlines the project’s objectives, methodology, and outcomes, emphasising millennials'
engagement in preserving and reinterpreting cultural heritage and the importance of intergenerational

Arheološkog instituta radili su na projektu
COOLTOUR – Milenijalci za kulturno nasleđe,
iz Erazmus plus programa Evropske unije. Tokom
realizacije projekta ciljevi istraživanja i aktivnosti
bili su usmereni na iznalaženje najboljih rešenja
u dijalogu mladih ljudi i stručnjaka iz oblasti
kulturnog nasleđa, odnosno adekvatnih načina
predstavljanja kulturnog nasleđa mladima,
ukazujući na izuzetan obrazovni potencijal koji imaju obe strane u ovom procesu. Polazno
istraživanje, koje je sproveo Tehnološki
univerzitet na Kipru, pokazalo je da su milenijalci
veoma zainteresovani za kulturno nasleđe, ali da je
potpuno prihvatanje vrednosti i značenja kulturnog
nasleđa kod mladih moguće ostvariti najpre
kroz prilagođavanje njihovim interesovanjima
i potrebama. Nove tehnologije i digitalna
komunikacija su izuzetno važni u pozicioniranju
kulturnog nasleđa u svesti milenijalaca kao
interesne grupe koja je trenutno demografski
najveća. Iz ovoga je proistekla metodologija
projekta na kojoj počivaju dva osnovna rezultata:
COOLTOUR digitalna platforma i smernice za
menadžere kulturnog nasleđa.
COOLTOUR digitalna platforma je spoj
društvene mreže i veb-aplikacije, koja omogućava
korisnicama da stvaraju i dele sadržaje o
kulturnoj baštini. Platforma se sastoji iz dva dela.
U jednom delu su ljudi koji se profesionalno
bave kulturnim nasleđem – oni stvaraju
osnovni sadržaj i pružaju istorijske podatke. U
drugom delu, korisnici – milenijalci, pruženo
nadograđuju, stvarajući dodatni, interaktivan i
digitalan sadržaj, razmenjujući mišljenja i utiske
unutar svoje virtuelne zajednice. COOLTOUR
smernice kreirane su na osnovu istraživanja,
dobrih praksi i iskustva nastalog tokom primene
metodologije projekta kako bi menadžerima
kulturnog nasleđa omogućile adekvatan dijalog
sa mladima i pomoću novih tehnologija i
onlajn-komunikacije obezbedile veće učešće
milenijalaca. Smernice pružaju alate i uputstva za
sve važne aspekte komunikacije nasleđa, poput
organizovanja radionica, upravljanja društvenim
mrežama, korišćenja veštačke inteligencije i dr.,
pružajući instrukcije kako da ovaj kolaborativni
proces bude što uspešniji. Tokom međunarodne
razmene u Arheološkom Parku Viminacijum,
60 milenijalaca iz šest evropskih država radilo
je na testiranju COOLTOUR platforme, za koju
su kreirali digitalne sadržaje, zasnovane na
interpretaciji naučno-istorijskih podataka do kojih
su došli kroz samostalno istraživanje, studijske
obilaske lokaliteta i kulturnih mesta u okolini
Viminacijuma, kao i kroz priče koje su sa njima
podelili saradnici Arheološkog instituta. Mladi su
takođe učestvovali u unapređenju metodologije i
samih smernica za menadžere kulturnog nasleđa,
ukazujući na najefikasnije elemente digitalnih alata i komunikacija. U narednoj fazi projekta,
ovi mladi COOLTOUR ambasadori prenosili su
stečeno znanje drugim menadžerima u kulturi
tokom nacionalnih pilot-programa u svakoj
od zemalja, učesnica projekta, istovremeno
dopunjujući sadržaj platforme za njih najvažnijim
mestima kulturnog nasleđa
Геофизичка истраживања на локалитету Cтублина – Cупска код Ћуприје
Применом геофизичких техника као неинвазивних и поузадних алата за истраживање археолошких локалитета, омогућено је проучавање, заштита и очување археолошког наслеђа. Геофизичка проспекцијау археолошким истраживањима дала је запажене резултате и показала се као веома брз метод којим је омогућено сагледавање археолошкихостатака, као и планирање даљих археолошких истраживања. Археолошки локалитет Стублина, село Супска код Ћуприје смештен је на уздигнутом платоу у долини реке Велике Мораве, 4km удаљен од Ћуприје. Резултати археолошких ископавања локалитета из 1956. године, указали суна вишеслојност насељавања и присуство старчевачког и винчанског хоризонта становања.
Локалитет Стублина - Супска након више од 60 година од последњих ископавања, дошао је у фокус интересовања археолога. Године 2019. приступило се геомагнетном снимању локалитета, и том приликом је снимљена површина од око 8ha.На основу приказаних резултата геомагнетне проспекције говориће се о величини и изгледу насеља, просторној динамици и међусобном односу објеката унутар насеља
A hoard of silver coins “Serbia Unknown Site” from the National museum of Serbia
The hoard that nowadays consists of one denarius and 1,286 antoniniani has been kept in the fund of the National Museum of Serbia for more than one century and, due to its discovery location being unknown, it is referred to as “Serbia Unknown Site”. The hoard covers the period from Caracalla’s independent reign (215 AD) to Trebonianus Gallus and Volusian (251-253 AD). Consecratio antoniniani of the Viminacium mint are present in an exceptional number (61) in the “Serbia Unknown Site” hoard. Also registered were issues for all 11 deified emperors in 17 types and one incus specimen minted for Nerva. Тhe terminus post quem of the “Serbia Unknown Site” hoard should be sought in the first half of 253 AD
