Psychometric properties of the 18-item Indonesian Mental Toughness Questionnaire using the Rasch model and Machine Learning

    Get PDF
The psychometric properties of the Indonesian version of the 18-item Mental Toughness Questionnaire (MTQ-18) remain vague. This study uses the Rasch model to elucidate these properties. In addition, boosting classification was adopted to assess the predictive validity of athletes’ achievement. The sample size comprised 400 athletes. According to the Martin-Loef likelihood-ratio test = 482, p = 1.0 and factor analysis of the Rasch residuals, the questionnaire tends to make unidimensional assumptions. The MADaQ3 = 0.074 shows the overall tendency of local independency across all items, with the majority clustered in moderate to low-level measures. Q11, Q15, and Q18 were clearly identified as showing gender bias, with significant effect sizes. According to the boosting classification, the performance between national vs no achievement (F1 = 0.7, AUC = 0.56) and international vs no achievement (F1 = 0.62, AUC = 0.58) was flagged as unsatisfactory predictive performance. In conclusion, the abridged questionnaire is not preferable for determining an individual’s future performance or achievement. Future studies are needed to develop a better version that is more unimpeded by gender bias, and to resolve the variability of the items

Exploring the fraud triangle model and microeconomic factors in zakat embezzlement

    Get PDF
Purpose - This study aims to explore the factors contributing to zakat embezzlement, using the fraud triangle theory and a microeconomic perspective to better understand the underlying dynamics in zakat mismanagement. Method - This study employs a qualitative research methodology, combining a review of relevant literature on the fraud triangle theory and its application to zakat management with thematic content analysis of interviews conducted with two experts in financial corruption and zakat management. The literature review examines academic and industry sources to explore drivers of zakat embezzlement, including opportunities, pressures, and rationalizations. Interviews with a financial management researcher and a zakat management official provide firsthand insights, which complement the desk-based research and contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the issue. Result - The study reveals that financial pressure, weak internal controls, and rationalization drive zakat embezzlement. The lack of transparency and governance in zakat institutions provides opportunities for mismanagement, while personal financial gain and ethical rationalization further exacerbate the issue. Implication - These findings suggest the need for stronger governance, better internal controls, and ethical training in zakat institutions. Strengthening transparency and accountability could reduce opportunities for embezzlement, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of zakat as a tool for poverty alleviation. Originality - This research uniquely applies the fraud triangle framework to zakat embezzlement, integrating microeconomic elements such as utility maximization and information asymmetry

Method - Employing a qualitative case study method, data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation involving active collectors. Result - The study reveals patterns of non-transparent spending, manipulation of personal financial records, and rationalisation of consumptive behaviours that conflict with Sharia principles such as sidq (truthfulness) and amanah (trustworthiness). Implication - The integration of forensic accounting with Islamic behavioural values offers a corrective approach to personal financial management based on Sharia ethics. Originality - This research is among the first to address hobby-related consumption behaviour through the combined lens of forensic accounting and Islamic financial ethics

Territory, Hilāl, and Sovereignty: Revisiting Indonesia’s Maṭla’ under MABIMS’ New Criteria

    Get PDF
Differences in determining the start of the lunar month often spark polemics due to varying methods, schools of thought, and interpretations of maṭla’. Indonesia adopts a territorial-based maṭla’, yet inconsistencies remain in how its geographical boundaries are applied. Law No. 43/2008 defines Indonesia’s territory as including land, sea, and air, raising questions about the ideal scope of maṭla’ under the MABIMS Neo Visibility Criteria and its legal status. This qualitative study uses library research and expert interviews, analyzed through Islamic legal principles (ijtihād istiṣlāhī) and a juridical-normative framework. Findings show that Indonesia’s maṭla’ ideally includes all sovereign areas-land, inland waters, archipelagic waters, and territorial seas. From a syar’i perspective, crescent sightings at sea are valid; hence, lunar calculations should reflect land and maritime zones under national jurisdiction

The Role of Public Law in Determining the Islamic Calendar in Indonesia

    Get PDF
The debate over the determination of the beginning of the Islamic calendar in Indonesia is still a complex issue that has a vast impact on religious, social, and public policy aspects. This polemic arises due to differences in ḥisāb (astronomical calculation) and rukyat (hilāl observation) methods adopted by various Islamic organizations, such as Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive-normative analysis to explore the urgency of legal formalization and the supremacy of public law in determining the beginning of the Islamic calendar. The findings show that the absence of a binding legal authority is the main factor fuelling disagreement. Government-organised isbat sessions are often not universally accepted, so a more assertive legal policy based on national consensus is needed. By considering the principle of benefit, this study recommends the integration of sharia, astronomical technology, and positive law to improve accuracy, legitimacy, and uniformity in determining the beginning of the Islamic calendar

Friendly Education: Prophet Muhammad's Interactions with Children

    Get PDF
Acts of violence, both verbal and non-verbal, that threaten children often occur in interactions between adults and children. Acts of violence like this are very counterproductive in the world of education. This article aims to analyze how the Prophet PBUH interacted with kids who had their universe. Following that, a descriptive analysis was conducted on the hadiths about the Prophet's contact with children that were recorded in the hadith books. Child-friendly education is a concept that emphasizes the importance of fostering a sense of safety and enjoyment in children. The Prophet's interactions with children provide valuable guidelines for child-friendly education. He greets them with a sense of security, appreciates their unique world, and allows them to play without scolding. He encourages sadness by joking with them and does not discriminate against children based on gender. This child-friendly educational model deserves further research to identify more comprehensive and in-depth prophetic education methods. The Prophet's affectionate approach towards children makes him a valuable model for educators

Social Emotional Learning to Improve Collaboration and Questioning Skills in Elementary Schools

    Get PDF
This study investigates the impact of social-emotional learning (SEL) on enhancing collaboration and questioning skills in elementary school students. The research focuses explicitly on 31 first-grade students in Palembang. Employing a classroom action research methodology, the study is structured into two cycles, each comprising planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. Data collection involved both observational techniques and testing. The results indicate marked improvements in collaboration and questioning skills across three phases: pre-cycle, cycle I, and cycle II. A 19% increase in questioning abilities was observed from the pre-cycle to cycle I, followed by an impressive 33% increase from cycle I to cycle II. This progression illustrates that while students are making commendable strides in developing their questioning skills, they still benefit from targeted guidance from educators to refine the substance of their inquiries. Regarding collaboration skills, applying SEL resulted in a noteworthy 25% enhancement from the pre-cycle to cycle I and a further 42% improvement from cycle I to cycle II. These findings underscore a significant advancement in students' capacities for teamwork, responsibility, and constructive feedback within group dynamics. Overall, the insights gained from this study highlight the effectiveness of implementing social-emotional learning in enriching the educational experience and fostering collaboration and questioning skills among elementary school students
