Not demeaning the dignity of women: A study on the authentic purpose of “Paca” (Bride-Price) in a traditional Indonesian society
Nearly all previous studies on customary marriage in traditional societies indicate that the practice of bride price demeans women. It, therefore, should be abolished. This study shows the opposite. The bride price practiced by traditional societies has a sacred purpose. The practice upholds women’s dignity. To some extent, women are even worshipped as if they were fertility goddesses. In this study, “paca” (bride price) of the Manggaraians in Indonesia is taken as a study case. The study used qualitative and quantitative methods. The study found that nearly all informants reject the notion of “paca” as a practice of commercializing women. What is true is the opposite. Based on this study, the Manggarian “paca” is a sacrificial expense of ritual celebration in which the bride’s membership in her clan of origin is revoked. She will get it a new in the groom’s clan. Naturally, the cost of this ceremony is borne by the groom’s family. This is the core purpose of “paca” ritual of the Manggaraians, while other functions are extrinsic and are inappropriate practices that should be abandoned. The Manggaraian “paca”, then, should continue to be cherished for its life-giving purpose while one should remain critical of its inappropriate practices
Unpacking the interplay dynamics of the bureaucratic environment, employee treatment and work engagement
The research aimed to examine the influence of the bureaucratic work environment and employee treatment on the work engagement of the employees. Literature was reviewed to deepen the concept of the study. The study used a descriptive assessment and correlational research design. The population of the study was the employees of the institution where the study was conducted and total enumeration was the sampling method. The study used questionnaires to gather the data and descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. The study found that the bureaucratic environment and employees' work engagement were high and employee treatment was moderate. The Pearson r correlation analysis suggested that bureaucratic and work engagement are significantly correlated but there was no significant correlation between employee treatment and work engagement. The study recognized its limitation because of its limited population and variables being investigated. It is necessary to conduct further studies to determine organizational culture and work engagement
Experiences of teachers from small schools in preparing and implementing daily lesson logs
This study examines the lived experiences of elementary school teachers in small schools under the Schools Division Office (SDO) of Laoag City in preparing and implementing Daily Lesson Logs (DLLs) for English 6. Employing a descriptive phenomenological approach, the research seeks to uncover the challenges faced, strategies employed, and factors that facilitate successful DLL preparation and implementation. Data were collected through online open-ended interview questionnaires with eight purposively selected teachers and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six-phase thematic analysis. Results indicate that teachers encounter significant challenges related to curriculum alignment, limited resources, and time constraints. To address these, participants reported employing strategies such as multimedia integration and collaborative teaching practices. Additionally, access to diverse instructional resources and teacher adaptability were identified as critical factors in overcoming these challenges. These findings highlight the need for targeted technical assistance and resource provision to support teachers in improving lesson quality and fostering effective instructional planning.

The influence of digital literacy, financial readiness, and government support on the information and communication technology adoption
The contemporary business environment is profoundly shaped by Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which are now integral to global commercial operations. Drawing on Eshet-Alkalai's Digital Literacy Framework, the Finance Readiness Framework, and the Advocacy Coalition Framework, this study aimed to explore how digital literacy, financial readiness, and government support influence ICT adoption among small businesses in Vigan City. It also assessed the levels of digital literacy, financial readiness, government support, and ICT adoption. Using descriptive and correlational research designs, the study surveyed 150 owners and employees of small businesses in Vigan City, selected through non-probability quota sampling. The data were collected using a researcher-designed questionnaire. The findings revealed that increased digital literacy enhanced ICT adoption by reducing barriers to technology integration, while financial readiness positioned businesses to invest effectively in ICT solutions. Moreover, substantial government support—through initiatives like subsidies, training programs, and infrastructure development—created an enabling environment for ICT adoption by addressing challenges such as high costs and inadequate infrastructure. These factors collectively enhanced operational efficiency and competitiveness among small businesses. To optimize ICT adoption further, the study recommended implementing training programs, workshops, and conducting additional research to identify other influencing factors and strategies for effective technology integration in small business operations
Nurturing a competitive attitude to enhance work performance and innovative work behaviour of the employees
The study aimed to examine the influence of competitive attitude on individual work performance and innovative work behaviour. Literature was reviewed to deepen the concept of the study. The study used assessment and correlational research design. The population of the study was all employees of the institution where the study was conducted and therefore total enumeration sampling was applied. Questionnaires were used to gather the data and descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. The study found that competitive attitude was moderate, while individual work performance and innovative work behaviour were high. The Pearson r correlation coefficient suggests that there is a significant and positive correlation between competitive attitude, individual work performance and innovative work behaviour. Thus, the hypothesis is accepted. The study recognizes its limitation because of its limited population and variables measured. Thus, it is necessary to include more population and wider context and variables that measure competitive attitude and its effect on innovative work behaviour
