    Effects of Temperature on the Rheological Properties of Rice Husk Modified Bentonite Drilling Fluids

    In this study, water base drilling fluids were developed using bentonite clay and rice husk. The pure and blends of bentonite clay and rice husk as specified by samples A with (pure bentonite), B (with pure rice husk), C (1:1 of rice husk to bentonite) and D (2:1 of rice husk to bentonite) were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). The XRD result of the samples showed that samples C and D both contains montmorillonite as mineral with the most intense peak at 5.887o. Samples A and B contain Quartz, and Montmorillonite respectively with the most intense peak at 2Ө value of 26.642o, 31.578o, 5.887o, 26.624o and 26.627o respectively. The results show strong interaction between sample A and C. FTIR results of samples A, B, C and D showed number of bands/peaks of 13,9,13 and 14 respectively and showed high level of interaction between pure and blends of the samples were with 14 peaks/bands each. Five water base drilling fluid samples produced using standard laboratory barrel (350 ml) method from bentonite and water with addition of rice husk in different proportion were investigated. The rheological properties (plastic viscosity, yield value, gel strength) of the samples were measured at different temperatures, using FANN 35 viscometer while the pH and density values were measured using pH meter and mud balance respectively. The pH values of all the produced drilling mud samples were alkaline (>7.0), close to the neutral value. Increase in temperatures bentonite drilling mud modified with rice husk does not have negative effect on the rheological properties of the drilling mud. The rice husk could be used as a viscosifier in the drilling mud for being capable of improving the viscosity of the mud at higher temperature

    Rice is Sri Lanka\u27s most popular staple food, and paddy cultivation is one of the country\u27s primary industries, with a substantial impact concentrated in a few large regions. Paddy farming in sri lanka faces several environmental, economic, and human issues. One of the driving factors that directly impact paddy production is temperature. Every stage of the rice plant will be affected by temperature between seeding and harvesting. Rice plants will be positively affected between specified temperature ranges; otherwise, the temperature would have a negative impact on paddy harvest. Using multiple linear regression as a technique, temperature guidance was created using numerical weather prediction (nwp) data and the r programming language to provide temperature forecasts. Numerical weather prediction (nwp) is a method of forecasting the weather based on initial weather conditions by using mathematical models of the atmosphere and oceans. The numerical integration of the governing equations with an initial condition provided by meteorological measurements is used to calculate the time evolution of the atmospheric circulation. With the help of identifying of the relationship between temperature and rice harvest using some acceptable methods, it will make some sense in future research when creating temperature guidance

    Brick Masonry Components Exposed to Aggressive Environment: Mechanical Behavior and Properties - An Experimental Investigation

    Deterioration of porous materials lead to severe damage in buildings. Salt weathering being the most common deterioration mechanism in porous materials which is related with the growth of crystal and pressure inside the pores of the materials associated with masonry. However the study on effect of salts on behavior of masonry as a whole unit and their individual components have not been elucidated for Indian conditions and only limited knowledge is available on deterioration of mortars which is the binder of brick masonry. This paper presents primary investigational study on components of masonry made of burnt clay bricks and cement mortar at joints in order to assess the damage induced by salts (sulphate and chloride). With this as aim, specimens were prepared in laboratory and were subjected to accelerated weathering conditions of different durations in sodium chloride and magnesium sulphate solutions which are the most common salts of attack in brick masonries when the environmental ambiance is strongly aggressive, either acidic or alkaline or in presence of sulphate and chloride produces physicochemical external attack and alterations in their integrity. Relevant studies have also been performed in the field by other authors, but in the study, conventional mortar mixes are manufactured and their behavior in aggressive environments. Certain mortar properties related to their behavior such as density, compressive strength, water absorption and porosity are analyzed for their disruptive effects. The paper presents the results obtained by the exposure of brick masonry and its components for a total duration of 14 weeks exposed to aggressive environment. Variation in mechanical properties of brick and its components were observed as the concentration of salts increased in the simulated environment created artificially in laboratory

    Suitability of Saw Dust Ash and Quarry Dust as Mineral fillers in Asphalt Concrete

    This study attempts to justify how suitable a conventional mineral filler and a non-conventional mineral filler can replace fractions of the aggregates in an asphalt concrete in order to reduce cost and encourage reuse of waste materials. Asphalt concrete mix proportions were generated with 3% Quarry Dust and 3% Saw Dust Ash replacements of aggregates. The binder contents were 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7% for a 60/70 penetration grade asphalt binder. Briquette specimens were formed using the asphalt concrete mix proportions carried out. Standard laboratory experiments were carried out on the aggregates, Quarry Dust, Saw Dust Ash, bituminous binder and asphalt concrete specimens based on the relevant codes and standards. The Marshall method was used for the asphalt concrete design procedure. The optimum binder content was found to be 4.85% using the standard Marshall curves. At optimum binder content, using 4% design air void for medium traffic and maximum aggregate of 10mm, the Stability, Flow, VMA and VFA were 5.83kN, 15.73(0.25mm), 15.28% and 73.25% respectively. These were within the Asphalt Institute design criteria

    SEI S.p.a. presented a project to build a 1320 MW coal-fired power plant in Saline Joniche, on the Southern tip of Calabria Region, Italy, in 2008. A gross early evaluation about the possibility to add CCS (CO2 Capture & Storage) was performed too. The project generated widespread opposition among environmental associations, citizens and local institutions in that period, against the coal use to produce energy, as a consequence of its GHG clima-alterating impact. Moreover the CCS (also named Carbon Capture & Storage or more recently CCUS: Carbon Capture-Usage-Storage) technology was at that time still an unknown and “mysterious” solution for the GHG avoiding to the atmosphere.   The present study concerns the sizing of the compression and transportation system of the CCS section, included in the project presented at the time by SEI Spa; the sizing of the compression station and the pipeline connecting the plant to the possible Fosca01 offshore injection site previously studied as a possible storage solution, as part of a coarse screening of CO2 storage sites in the Calabria Region. This study takes into account the costs of construction, operation and maintenance (O&M) of both the compression plant and the sound pipeline, considering the gross static storage capacity of the Fosca01 reservoir as a whole as previously evaluated

It has some significant real-life applications such as position control, aerospace vehicle control, and robotics. The objective is to determine the control law to the motor’s output torque such that the inverted pendulum motion will be stabilized about a vertical axis and position the rotary arm to a commanded angular position. In this study, multi-PID controllers, Linear-Quadratic Regulator (LQR), and Internal Model Control (IMC) controllers are designed and MATLAB-based simulations are performed to understand and compare the performance of the three control schemes
