This issue of the C. R. Physique is thin, but should attract readers, since it gathers articles written by laureates of the 
prizes of the French Academy of Sciences in the last three years. In these articles they explain their work to non-specialists, 
as Nobel laureates do in their Nobel lectures.
Julien Barré and his collaborators discuss Landau damping. This topic is related to the more general question: how can our 
irreversible world result from microscopic equations that are reversible in time? The equation of interest here is the Vlasov 
equation, which applies to systems with long-range forces, i.e. plasma and galaxies. The Vlasov equation determines the 
evolution of the particle density in phase space, just as the Boltzmann equation does. The difference is that the Boltzmann 
equation takes interactions between particles into account through a collision term in which stochasticity is artificially 
introduced, while the Vlasov equation explicitly writes Coulomb or Newton interactions within a mean-field expression that 
allows us to obtain a closed equation. Such an approach is possible because each particle feels the effect of many others, 
while in the case of short-range forces, collisions are essentially between particle pairs (as actually assumed by Boltzmann). 
The compatibility of the (time-reversible) Vlasov equation with damping has been demonstrated by Landau in 1946, but the 
actual calculation is arduous in more realistic cases, and Barré and his collaborators have extended the field of applications. 
Landau damping is an important key for understanding the behavior of galaxies.
While Barré’s results can be applied to electrons in plasma, the article of Georges and Richard Bouzerar is devoted 
to electrons in condensed matter. There, the interactions between electrons are often short-ranged in practice because 
of screening. They can, however, give rise to ferromagnetism, as in the doped semi-conductors studied in this article. In 
view of applications to spintronic devices, it is indeed of interest to dope III–V semiconductors as GaAs with magnetic 
impurities as Mn. For a given concentration of a given impurity, e.g., Mn, the Curie temperature Tc is experimentally found 
to depend very much on the host. G. and R. Bouzerar have been able to relate the value of Tc to a single parameter, 
which is the potential seen by a conduction electron on the impurity site. This is illustrated by the picture on the cover 
of the present issue. The maximum value of Tc (120 K for a 5% concentration) is obtained for GaAs, in agreement with 
first-principles calculations. Within a simple model, the authors were able to shed light on the physics in a wide variety 
of diluted magnetic semiconductors. The nature of the magnetic interactions varies from a long-range oscillatory character, 
reminiscent of transition metals, to a very-short-range ferromagnetic behavior in insulating compounds as Mn-doped GaN.
While screening often ensures a finite range of Coulomb interactions, long-range interactions (i.e. decaying as a power 
r−p of the distance r) do exist in solid-state physics. Such forces, resulting from elastic interactions, contribute to the 
instability of strained surfaces, which is addressed in the paper by Jean-Noël Aqua and Thomas Frisch. Strain naturally 
occurs if a thin film is deposited on a substrate that has a different atomic distance, so that the film spontaneously splits 
into islands. These islands have well-separated electronic states. Thus an island constitutes a quantum dot, something that 
is sometimes compared to an artificial atom. Quantum dots may be used for instance to make single-electron transistors. 
They are generally produced by lithography, but the Asaro–Tiller–Grinfeld instability described by Aqua and Frisch is an 
alternative approach. Indeed, the resulting islands are subject to self-organization, forming networks with approximately 
equal sizes and distances. Since the self-organization is not perfect, one can help organization by making deposits on 
patterned surfaces. The reader will have to decide whether this kind of organization still deserves to be called “self”! The 
Aqua–Frisch contribution is theoretical, but has relied on a constant collaboration with experimentalists in recent years. 
Such collaboration is a condition for success in a field where experimental traps can hardly be imagined by theorists, while 
experimentation without theoretical insight would be finding one’s path in the darkness.
The last contribution of a prize winner, namely Aleksandra Walczak, belongs to biology and mathematics as much as 
to physics. The author asks how Nature manages to satisfy physical laws in living organisms, i.e. complex and cooperative 
structures (“emergent”, as some physicists nowadays say). Among other examples, she considers the egg of the fruit fly, as it 
evolves to become a fruit fly. This transformation is triggered by a maternal protein gradient that can be considered as input 
information, regulating the output, namely genes that control the process. A problem that has to be taken into account is 
the presence of stochastic processes (resulting for instance from the random diffusion of protein molecules). This is rather 
familiar to physicists, and Aleksandra Walczak presents a probabilistic model to find the “optimal solution”. As a matter of http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.crhy.2015.10.004

706 Editorialfact, a solution has already been found by Nature, but was it optimal? The author concludes that Nature’s work is pretty 
good! Anyway, this article helps us to understand elementary, but astonishing biological processes.
In addition to contributions of prize laureates, this issue contains a “spontaneous” article. It turns out that our journal 
currently publishes almost only invited papers. We still receive manuscripts that are not invited, but unfortunately most 
of them must be rejected, although some are quite good, but too specialized to fit our standards. The article by Lajimi 
Elamri Nour and Noureddine Boukadida is devoted to designing a building where two zones need to be at two different 
temperatures. This numerical study shows the impact of a multi-alveolar structure on the thermal behavior of a bi-zone 
building, reducing appreciably energy consumption. Our referees and the editorial board of our journal think that such 
questions are important in a time when energy saving is a common concern.
The five articles contained in the present issue show a vivid picture of Physics, applied to different aspects of our world, 
which are all of current interest.

Ce numéro des C. R. Physique est mince, mais mérite d’attirer de nombreux lecteurs, puisqu’il rassemble des articles écrits 
par des lauréats de prix décernés par l’Académie des sciences au cours des trois dernières années. Dans ces articles, ils 
expliquent leur recherche aux profanes, comme les lauréats Nobel le font dans leurs Nobel lectures.
Julien Barré et ses collaborateurs discutent l’amortissement de Landau. Ce problème se rattache à une question plus 
générale : comment notre monde irréversible peut-il être issu d’équations réversibles par rapport au temps ? Il s’agit ici de 
l’équation de Vlasov, qui s’applique à des systèmes soumis à des forces à longue portée (plasmas, galaxies). Elle détermine 
l’évolution de la densité de particules dans l’espace des phases, tout comme l’équation de Boltzmann. La différence est que 
cette dernière tient compte des interactions entre particules par un terme de collision où la stochasticité est introduite 
artificiellement, alors que l’équation de Vlasov contient explicitement les interactions coulombiennes ou newtoniennes. Une 
approximation de champ moyen permet d’avoir une équation fermée. Ceci est possible parce que chaque particule subit 
l’effet de beaucoup d’autres, alors que si les forces sont à courte portée, les collisions sont essentiellement entre des paires 
de particules, comme le supposait Boltzmann. La compatibilité de l’équation de Vlasov (réversible par rapport au temps) fut 
démontrée par Landau en 1946, mais le calcul dans des cas plus réalistes est ardu. C’est ce qu’ont entrepris Barré et ses 
collaborateurs. L’amortissement de Landau est une clé pour comprendre l’évolution des galaxies.
Alors que l’article de Barré peut s’appliquer aux électrons dans les plasmas, celui de Georges et Richard Bouzerar traite 
des électrons dans la matière condensée. Les interactions sont alors souvent à courte portée à cause de l’effet d’écran. Elles 
peuvent cependant donner naissance au ferromagnétisme, notamment dans les semi-conducteurs dopés étudiés dans cet 
article. Il est en effet intéressant, pour des applications spintroniques, de doper des semi-conducteurs III–V comme GaAs 
avec des impuretés magnétiques telles que Mn. Pour une concentration donnée d’une impureté donnée, la température de 
Curie Tc mesurée dépend beaucoup de l’hôte. G. et R. Bouzerar ont pu relier Tc à un paramètre unique, qui est le potentiel 
vu par un électron de conduction sur le site de l’impureté. C’est ce que montre l’illustration de couverture de ce numéro. 
Le maximum de Tc (120 K pour une concentration de 5 %) est obtenu pour GaAs, en accord avec des calculs ab initio. Dans 
le cadre d’un modèle simple, les auteurs ont su éclairer la physique de divers semi-conducteurs magnétiques. La nature des 
interactions magnétiques évolue d’un comportement oscillant qui rappelle les métaux de transition, à un couplage à très 
courte portée dans les composés isolants tels que GaN dopé au manganèse.
Si l’effet d’écran assure souvent une portée finie aux interactions coulombiennes, des interactions à longue portée (dé-
croissant comme une puissance r−p à longue distance r) existent bien en physique du solide. De telles forces, provenant 
d’interactions élastiques, contribuent à l’instabilité des surfaces sous contrainte, objets de l’article de Jean-Noël Aqua et Tho-
mas Frisch. Une telle contrainte apparaît si une couche mince est déposée sur un substrat qui possède une distance atomique 
différente, si bien que la couche se partage spontanément en îlots. Ces îlots ont des états électroniques bien séparés. Un 
îlot constitue ainsi une boîte quantique, objet quelquefois comparé à un atome artificiel. Les boîtes quantiques peuvent être 
utilisées, par exemple, pour confectionner des transistors à un électron. Elles sont généralement produites par lithographie, 
mais l’instabilité d’Asaro–Tiller–Grinfeld décrite par Aqua et Frisch constitue une autre possibilité. En effet, les îlots qui se 
forment s’auto-organisent en réseaux où les dimensions et les distances sont à peu près égales. Comme l’auto-organisation 
n’est pas parfaite, on peut aider le réseau à s’organiser en réalisant le dépôt sur un substrat préalablement nanostructuré. 
Le lecteur décidera si cette organisation mérite encore le préfixe « auto » ! Aqua et Frisch sont des théoriciens, mais ont tra-
vaillé en constante collaboration avec des expérimentateurs ces dernières années. Cette collaboration est nécessaire dans un 
domaine où les pièges expérimentaux peuvent difficilement être prévus par un théoricien, tandis qu’une expérimentation 
sans vues théoriques équivaudrait à chercher son chemin dans l’obscurité.
Aleksandra Walczak signe le dernier article de la catégorie « prix ». Il s’agit là de biologie et de mathématique autant 
que de physique. L’auteur se demande comment la Nature parvient à utiliser les lois physiques dans l’élaboration d’orga-
nismes vivants, qui sont des structures complexes et coopératives (« émergentes », comme disent quelquefois les physiciens 
d’aujourd’hui). Entre autres exemples, elle considère l’œuf de la mouche drosophile, qui évolue pour devenir, lui aussi, une 
mouche. Cette transformation est provoquée par un input : le gradient de concentration d’une protéine créée par les ARN 
messagers secrétés par la mère. Il régule l’output, en l’occurrence les gènes qui contrôlent le processus. Une difficulté dont 
il faut tenir compte est la stochasticité, qui résulte par exemple de la diffusion aléatoire des molécules de protéine. Les 
Editorial 707physiciens savent faire ça, et Aleksandra Walczak présente un modèle probabiliste pour obtenir la « solution optimale ». En 
fait, la Nature a déjà trouvé une solution, mais est-elle optimale ? L’auteur conclut que la Nature n’a pas trop mal travaillé ! 
En tout cas, cet article aide à comprendre certains processus biologiques élémentaires, mais surprenants.
Outre les contributions des lauréats de prix, ce numéro contient un article « spontané ». Notre revue actuellement ne 
publie guère que des articles invités. Nous recevons pourtant des manuscrits non invités ; malheureusement, la plupart 
d’entre eux doivent être refusés, bien que certains soient bons, parce que trop spécialisés pour notre revue. L’article de 
Lajimi Elamri Nour et Noureddine Boukadida est consacré à l’aménagement d’un immeuble où deux zones doivent être à 
des températures différentes. Cette étude numérique démontre l’effet d’une structure multi-alvéolaire sur le comportement 
thermique d’un local bi-zone, dont la consommation énergétique est ainsi fort diminuée. Nos experts pensent, ainsi que 
la rédaction de notre journal, qu’une telle question est importante à une époque où les économies d’énergie sont une 
préoccupation majeure.
Les cinq articles contenus dans le présent numéro présentent une image vivante de la physique appliquée à différents 
aspects, tous d’intérêt très actuel.
