Une fois encore cette année, je suis heureux de témoigner ici du patronage de l’Académie des
sciences à ce Colloque, co-organisé par ONERA-Alumni et l’Université d’Angers. Ces rencontres
annuelles, de haut niveau scientifique, sont dues à une belle initiative de Bruno Chanetz, orga-
nisateur hors pair avec Marie-Claire Coët. Il convient tout d’abord de les remercier chaleureu-
sement pour savoir mettre ainsi en avant un patrimoine historique, autour de personnages de
notre terroir qui ont illustré dans les siècles passés la marche en avant, féconde mais souvent
balbutiante, de la science. En outre, une publication dans les Comptes Rendus Mécanique assure
pérennité et transmission aux communications de cette journée. Merci encore aux intervenants,
ainsi qu’à l’Université d’Angers pour cet accueil dans la douceur angevine.
Denis Papin fut un homme attachant, lié au protestantisme si vivant à Saumur, que la France,
dans un moment où se préparait déjà la triste révocation de l’Édit de Nantes, ne sut pas s’attacher,
pas plus qu’elle ne conserva l’immense figure de Christiaan Huygens, accueilli à l’Académie des
sciences en 1670, quatre ans après sa création. Ce dernier avait recruté le jeune Papin, âgé de 24
ans, en tant qu’assistant. En 1674, l’un et l’autre se retrouvent donc à Londres, non sans que Papin
ait publié une première expérience, où l’énergie chimique de la poudre à canon est transformée
en énergie mécanique déplaçant un piston. Peu après et pour la suite de son existence, c’est la
transformation de l’énergie thermique en énergie mécanique qui mobilise sa vive imagination et
ses talents d’expérimentateur, on pourrait presque dire « de bricoleur habile », talents qu’il cultive
auprès de Robert Boyle, afin de produire « des forces mouvantes extrêmement grandes », comme
il l’écrira quinze ans plus tard, puisqu’à l’époque c’est de force et non d’énergie qu’il est question,
ce dernier concept n’existant pas encore.
L’histoire de cette transformation, par le biais de la vapeur d’eau, est extrêmement intéres-
sante. Source d’une révolution industrielle majeure en Europe, peut-être la première, ses débuts
furent marqués par de nombreuses tentatives et réalisations empiriques, de plus en plus perfor-
mantes, où s’illustrent, aux côtés de Papin, les noms de Thomas Newcomen et de James Watt. Il
est fascinant aujourd’hui de lire la rapide progression des dispositifs techniques, qui à partir de
1750 envahissent les mines britanniques et en assurent la puissance, en parallèle à la lente émer-
gence de la science conceptuelle, cette science dont Robert Boyle et l’abbé Edme Mariotte posent
les premiers jalons et qui n’aboutit qu’un siècle plus tard au magnifique édifice de la thermody-
namique.

Cette émergence mystérieuse d’une science nouvelle, qui naît d’une sorte de rêve éveillé
face à la réalité, en s’appuyant le plus souvent sur une mathématisation du monde, est sans
doute exemplaire du rapport entre l’ingénieur et le savant, de cet appui mutuel que se donnent
l’expérience et la conceptualisation dans la science moderne, ainsi que Blaise Pascal l’avait
génialement mis en œuvre au Puy-de-Dôme. Conor Maguire, secouant avec talent la poussière
de l’histoire, nous a montré dans son approche si originale que le terme moderne de scientist
n’apparaît dans la littérature que vers 1850, avec l’éclosion de la thermodynamique.
Il est piquant d’observer que, de nos jours, un scientifique au talent exceptionnel, Pierre-
Gilles de Gennes, prix Nobel de physique en 1991, s’attaqua au même problème que Papin, à
savoir le jet d’eau nécessaire pour éteindre un incendie. Papin est peut-être l’auteur du mémoire
anonyme, portant sur un jet orientable, présenté en 1671 à l’Académie, tandis que de Gennes,
doté d’une éblouissante intuition expérimentale, sut proposer aux pompiers de Paris l’ingrédient
qui, mélangé à l’eau, réduisait la turbulence dans le tuyau et permettait aux lances d’atteindre les
immeubles de grande hauteur dont Paris commençait alors à se doter. Il s’agit d’un polymère de
haut poids moléculaire, le poly-oxyéthylène, utilisé à très faible concentration : mais l’explication
précise du phénomène continue de défier les physiciens.
Au cours de cette journée, d’excellents exposés nous ont montré quelques remarquables
exemples du devenir de l’art de l’ingénieur, désormais appuyé sur la science fondamentale, l’un
et l’autre témoignant de la créativité présente en Europe. Pourtant, une phrase de la correspon-
dance de Papin, lors des échecs qui marquèrent la fin de sa vie, n’est-elle pas particulièrement
actuelle, lorsqu’il écrit « Les princes ont tant de sortes d’occupations qu’ils ne pensent guère aux
sciences ? » La carrière, heurtée et souvent malheureuse, de cet homme dont le corps repose à
Londres et qui fut un nomade entre France, Angleterre et Allemagne, ne nous parle-t-elle pas au-
jourd’hui de ces jeunes chercheurs, dont le prince ne se soucie guère du nomadisme et qui, après
une thèse souvent brillante en France, accumulent les séjours postdoctoraux et s’exilent pour
longtemps dans l’incertitude du lendemain, voire abandonnent le métier de chercheur ?
Pour conclure, donnons-nous donc rendez-vous dans un an à Montpellier, pour y découvrir
l’abbé Bertholon, « un électricien des Lumières », comme l’a heureusement qualifié mon confrère
Jean-Paul Poirier.

Le présent fascicule est issu d’un colloque en hommage à Denis Papin, organisé à Saumur le
26 mai 2023, en partenariat avec l’université d’Angers et l’Académie des sciences.
Déjà le 20 juillet 1947 à Chitenay, dans le Loir-et-Cher, eut lieu une cérémonie célébrant
l’anniversaire des 300 ans de la naissance de Denis Papin en cette commune. Albert Caquot,
membre de l’Académie des Sciences, la présidait et titra ainsi son discours : « Denis Papin, grand
mécanicien, grand inventeur »[1], reconnaissant en lui un maillon essentiel dans la conception
de la machine à vapeur que devaient perfectionner « Savery, Newcomen et Cayley et surtout (le)
magnifique ingénieur James Watt ». Il poursuivait : « Grâce à la vapeur, l’ère de la vitesse pouvait
naître avec les voies ferrées, et l’énergie mise à sa disposition décuplait l’industrie ». À l’heure
où beaucoup de nos contemporains voient dans la révolution industrielle le péché originel,
responsable de la destruction de notre planète, citons Albert Caquot — dont l’esprit patriotique et
philanthropique ne peut être mis en doute — mais dont les propos trois quart de siècle plus tard
résonnent étrangement, lorsqu’il encense la mécanisation, qui « permettra la vie heureuse pour
les plus humbles, en mettant à leur disposition les nouveaux et les plus fidèles esclaves mécaniques
que créera l’intelligence ».
Si la mémoire de Denis Papin, pionnier de la machine à vapeur, fut évoquée à Saumur en
2023, c’est qu’il fut étudiant à l’Académie protestante de Saumur, avant d’émigrer en Angleterre
et en Allemagne. En 2017 déjà, nous avions rendu hommage, en l’hôtel de ville de Saumur, à un
autre savant ayant étudié au sein de cette académie : le mathématicien Abraham de Moivre. La
révocation de l’édit de Nantes par Louis XIV a contraint Papin à l’exil, comme ce fut également le
cas pour Abraham de Moivre[2].
Ce fascicule se propose de rappeler la vie et l’œuvre de Denis Papin, de montrer l’utilisation
de la machine à vapeur au cours de la révolution industrielle dans le domaine des transports et
de présenter la situation actuelle dans différents domaines :
• l’utilisation des mathématiques dans l’ingénierie ;
• les centrales nucléaires, où l’on génère de la vapeur pour produire de l’électricité ;
• la chaine de traction des trains à grande vitesse ;
• la propulsion aéronautique ;
• le renouveau des dirigeables dû à la propulsion électrique et au fond plat.

Abstract. The iconic problem of the stability analysis of a vertical cut is revisited after Drucker’s celebrated
contribution, in order to assess the sensitivity of the analysis to the soil tensile resistance. Within the
framework of the exterior approach of the theory of yield design, the same virtual mechanisms as introduced
by Drucker are reconsidered and thoroughly implemented. It is observed that, whatever the value of
the friction angle, the drastic drop of the non-dimensional stability factor observed by Drucker when the
constituent soil does not sustain tension remains confined within the immediate vicinity i.e., a few percent,
of zero tensile resistance. Despite the fact that this conclusion cannot be considered as a final one since it
is only based upon a full implementation of Drucker’s virtual collapse mechanisms, we believe it may bring
some relief as to the reliability of classical analyses that do not take any tension cutoff into account, as a
response to Drucker’s warning about “the consequences of assuming soil unable to take tension”.
Résumé. On reprend le problème de l’analyse de stabilité d’une tranchée verticale après la contribution
célèbre de Drucker, afin d’évaluer la sensibilité de l’analyse à la résistance en traction du sol. Dans le cadre de
l’approche par l’extérieur de la théorie du calcul à la rupture, les mécanismes virtuels introduits par Drucker
sont réexaminés pour une mise en œuvre complète. On observe que, quelle que soit la valeur de l’angle
de frottement, la chute drastique du facteur adimensionnel de stabilité observée par Drucker lorsque le sol
n’offre aucune résistance à la traction reste confinée dans le voisinage immédiat, c’est-à-dire quelques pour
cent, de la résistance nulle en traction. Bien que cette conclusion ne puisse être considérée comme définitive,
puisqu’elle n’est fondée que sur une mise en œuvre complète des mécanismes virtuels introduits par Drucker,
nous pensons qu’elle peut apporter un certain soulagement quant à la fiabilité des analyses classiques en
réponse à l’avertissement de Drucker sur « les conséquences qui pourraient résulter d’une hypothèse de sol
incapable de résister en traction ».

1. Yield design analysis for materials obeying a Coulomb or Tresca strength criterion
with tension cutoff
Tresca’s and Coulomb’s criteria with zero-tension cutoff were considered by Drucker and Prager
[1, 2] for the stability analysis of a vertical cut, who, implementing a vanishing virtual velocity
field, identified a significant reduction of the critical height of the cut. Salençon and Pecker [3],
Chatzigogos, Pecker and Salençon [4] also referred to a Tresca criterion with zero-tension cutoff
for the determination of the ultimate bearing capacity of shallow foundations under inclined
eccentric loads.

From a general viewpoint, Coulomb or Tresca strength criteria with a zero-tension cutoff,
which include cohesionless Coulomb’s criterion, illustrate the concept of strength criteria for
which the zero-stress state lies on the boundary of the domain of resistance, as considered by
Frémond and Friaa [5]. For such criteria, it turns out that, when implementing the exterior
approach of the Yield design theory, the minimization process often results in “vanishing” virtual
velocity fields, such as those implemented in [2] or [6].
These criteria stand as particular cases of intrinsic curve type strength criteria with a tension
cutoff set at a value T , which may either be zero, with the meaning that no tension can be sus-
tained by the material, or positive allowing some tensile stresses. As a “tribute” to D. C. Drucker
(1918–2001), this contribution is devoted to a more detailed analysis of the minimization process
implemented in [2] for the stability analysis of a vertical cut, in the cases of a Tresca or Coulomb
strength criterion when a positive tension cutoff T tends to zero, in order to assess the sensitivity
of the analysis to the soil tensile resistance.
2. Critical height of a vertical cut
In terms of non-ordered principal stresses, a Coulomb criterion defined by a friction angle φ and
a cohesion C , with a tension cutoff denoted by T such that 0 ≤ T < H =C cotφ, can be written as

The exterior approach of the yield design theory states that the rate of work by external forces
exerted on the structure whose stability is under concern shall not be superior to the maximum
resisting rate of work in any virtual velocity field U . Such virtual velocity fields U can be piecewise

of a tension cutoff, i.e., 3.83 whatever φ, (3.77649 for φ= 0) as usually agreed upon [9–12].
The results of the minimization process are displayed in Figure 4, where (γh/C ) tan(π/4−φ/2)
is plotted as a function of τ= T /ρ = tan(π/4+φ/2)T /2C .
It comes out, through this normalization process, that all the results fit on a parabolic like
curve with a horizontal axis and a summit on the vertical axis at γh tan(π/4−φ/2)/C = 2, which
is the critical value obtained by Drucker and has also been established as a lower bound estimate
through a simple three-zone relevant stress field.
It also appears that the mechanisms in Figure 2 only prevail over the classical log-spiral one
for small values of T /ρ, namely when T /ρ ≤ 0.07, while the drastic drop to the critical and exact
valueγh/C = 2tan(π/4+φ/2) for τ= 0 remains confined within the immediate vicinity of T /ρ = 0.
From a practical viewpoint, if a 20% drop is considered as acceptable, T /ρ must be superior to
3%, which means that the tensile resistance of the soil shall not be less than 0.06C tan(π/4−φ/2).
It is worth insisting on the fact that these results are valid whatever the value of φ.
Obviously, strictly speaking, the conclusions enounced here above cannot be considered as
final since they only result from a full implementation of Drucker’s virtual collapse mechanisms.
Nevertheless, it can be observed that, from a physical viewpoint, these mechanisms, when

T /ρ↘ 0, with Em(T /ρ) ↘ 0, are perfectly suited to matching the zero normal stress constraint,
which is imposed as a boundary condition along the stress-free vertical and horizontal edges of
the cut, with the vanishing tensile resistance of the material. Hence, as a response to Drucker’s
warning about “the consequences of assuming soil unable to take tension” [2], we believe that
the analysis that has been developed here may bring some relief as to the reliability of classical
analyses that do not take any tension cutoff into account.
In the particular case of a purely cohesive frictionless material (φ = 0), numerical static
lower bound approaches have been developed, assuming full tensile resistance of the material
(ρ = 2C ), which culminated with γh/C ≥ 3.77522 as a lower bound estimate in [11]. Checking the
sensitivity of such approaches to a reduction of the tensile resistance would, obviously, help to
comfort the preceding conclusion.
