Abstract. Let K be a number field. Given a polynomial f (x) ∈ K [x] of degree d ≥ 2, it is conjectured that
the number of preperiodic points of f is bounded by a uniform bound that depends only on d and [K : Q].
However, the only examples of parametric families of polynomials with no preperiodic points are known
when d is divisible by either 2 or 3 and K = Q. In this article, given any integer d ≥ 2, we display infinitely
many parametric families of polynomials of the form ft (x) = xd+c(t ), c(t ) ∈ K (t ), with no rational preperiodic
points for any t ∈ K .
Résumé. Soit K un corps de nombres. Étant donné un polynôme f (x) ∈ K [x] de degré d ≥ 2, il est conjecturé
que le nombre de points prépériodiques de f est borné par une constante ne dépendant que de d et
[K :Q]. Cependant, les seuls exemples de familles paramétriques de polynômes sans points prépériodiques
supposent 2|d ou 3|d et K = Q. Dans cet article, étant donné un entier d ≥ 2, nous démontrons qu’il existe
une infinité de familles paramétriques de polynômes de la forme ft (x) = xd + c(t ), c(t ) ∈ K (t ), sans points
prépériodiques rationnels pour tout t ∈ K .

1. Introduction
An arithmetic dynamical system over a number field K consists of a rational function f :Pn(K ) →
Pn(K ) of degree at least 2 with coefficients in K where the mth iterate of f is defined recursively
by f 1(x) = f (x) and f m(x) = f ( f m−1(x)) when m ≥ 2. A point P ∈ Pn(K ) is said to be a periodic
point for f if there exists a positive integer m such that f m(P ) = P . If N is the smallest positive

integer such that f N (P ) = P , then the periodic point P is said to be of exact period N . A point
P ∈ Pn(K ) is said to be a preperiodic point for f if the orbit { f i (P ) : i = 0,1,2, . . .} of P is finite, i.e.,
if some iterate f i (P ) is periodic.
The following conjecture was proposed by Morton and Silverman in p. 4 of [6].
Conjecture 1. There exists a bound B(D,n,d) such that if K /Q is a number field of degree D, and
f : Pn(K ) → Pn(K ) is a morphism of degree d ≥ 2 defined over K , then the number of K -rational
preperiodic points of f is bounded by B(D,n,d).
When f is taken to be a quadratic polynomial over Q, the following conjecture was suggested
in [2, Conjecture 2] and [9, Conjecture 2].
Conjecture 2. If N ≥ 4, then there is no quadratic polynomial f (x) ∈Q[x] with a rational point of
exact period N .
The conjecture has been proved when N = 4, see [5, Theorem 4], and N = 5, see [2, Theorem 1].
A conditional proof for the case N = 6 was given in [10, Theorem 7].
Although polynomials described by an equation of the form xd + c, d ≥ 2, c ∈ K , with rational
preperiodic points are scarce, examples of parametric families of polynomials with no preperi-
odic points are very few in the literature. In Theorem 4 of [3], families of such polynomials were
given when d is even or when d is divisible by 3, and K =Q. The main finding of this article can
be described as follows. Let K be a number field. Given an arbitrary integer d ≥ 2, we prove the
existence of infinitely many parametric families of polynomials of degree d with no K -rational
preperiodic points. This is achieved using some recent results on the non existence of rational
points on certain twisted superelliptic curves.
2. Parametric families of polynomials with no periodic points
In what follows K will denote a number field with ring of integers OK . The following proposition
is [8, Lemma 1].
Proposition 3. Let f (x) = xd + c, where d ≥ 2 is an integer and c ∈ K \ {0}. If f has a K -rational
periodic point, then there exist a,b ∈ OK such that c = a/bd , and (aOK ,bd OK ) = I d for some ideal
I in OK .
Proposition 3 shows that polynomials described by an equation of the form xd +c, d ≥ 2, c ∈ K ,
with K -rational preperiodic points are rare. However, up to the knowledge of the author, the only
such family is given as Theorem 4 in [3] where K = Q. The statement of the latter theorem is as
follows.
Theorem 4. Let 2 | d and m ≥ 4; or 3 | d and m ≥ 3. Then for t ∈Q, the polynomial

Now we state the main result of this work.
Theorem 5. Let K be a number field with ring of integers OK . Let d ≥ 2 be an integer. Let
P (T ) ∈ OK [T ] be of degree N a multiple of d such that the multiplicity of each of its roots is at
most d −1. Assume moreover that the Galois group of P (T ) over K has an element fixing no root of
P (T ). Then there exists w ∈OK \ {0} such that the polynomial

Proof. According to [4, Theorem 3.1], given that the Galois group of P (T ) over K has an element
fixing no root of P (T ), it follows that there exists w ∈ OK \ {0} such that the twisted superelliptic
curve defined by yd = w ·P (T ) has no K -rational points. In other words, there exists no (y, t , s) ∈
K 3 \ {(0,0,0)} such that yd = w ·Q(t , s), where Q(T,S) = SN ·P (T /S). In view of Proposition 3, f
has no K -rational periodic points of any period, hence no K -rational preperiodic points for any
t ∈ K . 
Remark 6. One knows that the proportion of degree N polynomials P (T ) ∈ OK [T ] with height
bounded by H and such that the Galois group of P (T ) over K is isomorphic to the symmetric
group SN tends to 1 as H tends to ∞, see for example [1, Theorem 2.1]. Consequently, the
proportion of fixed degree polynomials P (T ) introduced in Theorem 5 with height bounded by
H tends to 1 as H tends to ∞.

Résumé. Sur l’espace hyperbolique, nous donnons le spectre du Laplacien agissant sur les champs de
tenseurs symétriques sans trace de tous rangs.

tensors fields of any rank.

1. Introduction
L’étude des Laplaciens agissants sur les (champs de) tenseurs symétriques de rang r , comme
le Laplacien de Licnerowicz ∆L , est importante pour aborder certains problèmes en géométrie
riemannienne comme en relativité générale [2].
Sur l’espace hyperbolique, le spectre de ∆L est déjà connu lorsque r = 2. Dans la littérature
physique r ≥ 3 apparaît naturellement dans l’étude des champs spins élevés, en théorie des
cordes et dans la correspondance ADF/CFT (voir [10] par exemple). Ainsi par souci de complé-
tude, il faut calculer ce spectre pour toute valeur de r ∈ N∗ sur l’espace hyperbolique Hn+1. Le
spectre essentiel de ∆L découle du travail de J. M. Lee [7, propositions D et E] pour tout r ∈N∗ et
le spectre par l’auteur mais seulement pour r = 2 [3]. On peut aussi rappeler ici qu’il est montré
dans [4] qu’il n’y a pas de tenseur propre L2, toujours pour r = 2.
Le but de cette courte note est de prouver que surHn+1, il n’y a pas de valeur propre en dessous
du spectre essentiel pour tout r ∈N∗. Une conséquence est la suivante :

On peut en déduire facilement le spectre de tout Laplacian de la forme ∆L+ termes de
courbure, certains sont donnés en section 4.
Pour r ≥ 2, tout r -tenseur symétrique peut être décomposé en tenseur symétrique sans trace
et un (r − 2)-tenseur symétrique tensorisé (symétriquement) avec la métrique, et le Laplacien
de Lichnerowicz préserve cette décomposition. Ainsi le spectre sur les fonctions, les 1-formes
et les tenseurs symétriques de trace nulle, permet d’obtenir le spectre sur tous les tenseurs
symétriques.
Afin d’obtenir des estimées fines pour la méthode employée ici, il sera pratique de rappeler un
Laplacien auxiliaire ∆K agissant aussi sur les r -tenseurs symétriques et d’utiliser une formule de
Weitzenböck.

5. Remarque sur les variétés asymptotiquement hyperboliques statiques
Comme pour l’espace hyperbolique, il est tentant d’utiliser une fonction spéciale pour d’autres
variétés asymptotiquement hyperboliques (AH pour abréviation, voir [7] pour une définition
précise). L’existence d’une solution non triviale de l’équation de type Obata H(ψ) = ψg dans le
contexte AH va caractériser l’espace hyperbolique [11], il faut donc être plus modéré pour une
généralisation.
Regardons le cas des variétés AH statiques (M , g ,ψ) (des familles de dimensions infinies

A counterexample to an optimistic guess
about étale local systems

Relative p-adic Hodge theory aims at extending known results in p-adic Hodge theory to a
p-adic local system on a rigid variety. Let X be a geometrically connected, quasi-compact rigid
analytic variety over a p-adic field K and let E be a Qp -local system on the étale site X é t . Liu
and Zhu [3] showed that if at one point x̄ ∈ X (K̄ ) the stalk Ex̄ is de Rham as a p-adic Galois
representation, then E is a de Rham local system; in particular, the stalk of Eȳ at any point ȳ ∈ X (K̄ )
would be de Rham as well. They noted that the similar statements replacing “de Rham” by either
“crystalline” or “semistable” are both wrong. However, inspired by potential semistability of de
Rham representations [1], they ask [3, Remark 1.4] if a de Rham local system E on X would
become semistable1 after pulling the system back to a finite étale cover of X , or even after
enlarging the ground field K by a finite extension. While the former guess may well be true, in
this paper we construct an example illustrating the failure of the latter.
Theorem 1. There exist a projective variety X over a p-adic field K , and an étale local system E
on X , such that E is de Rham, but for every finite extension K ′/K , the restriction of E to XK ′ is not
semistable.
More precisely, for every finite extension K ′ of K , there exist a further extension L/K ′ and a point
x ∈ X (L), such that Ex is not semistable as a representation of GalL .
Proof. Let p be an odd prime, and let X be the elliptic curve over Qp with Weierstrass equation
y2 = x(x −p)(x +1).
Let X ′ be (the normalization of) the double cover of X given by
y2 = x(x −p)(x +1), z2 = x;

it is again an elliptic curve, Galois over X with deck transformation group Z/2Z cyclic of order 2.
Let π : X ′ → X be the covering map. Let E be the rank-1 direct summand of the rank-2 étale
sheaf π∗Qp on X , corresponding to the nontrivial character of the deck transformation group
Z/2Z. This E is de Rham because it comes from geometry.
On the other hand, for any L of absolute ramification degree at least 3, we can find a point (x, y)
above which E is not semistable, as follows. Let x be any uniformizer for L; then x(x −p)(x +1) is
a square in L, so we can find y ∈ L such that (x, y) ∈ X (L).
Now E(x,y) is the rank-one representation of GalL
