Résumé Nous donnons des constantes dans l’inégalité de concentration à gauche de Talagrand pour
les processus empiriques indexés par des classes de fonctions, en partant de la méthode de
Herbst. Le point nouveau est que la constante du facteur variance est exacte, ce qui répond

Abstract We give new constants in Talagrand’s left concentration inequality for maxima of empirical
processes. Our approach is based on the Herbst method. The improvement we get concerns

1. Introduction

espace polonais muni de sa tribu borélienne. SoitF une famille dénombrable de fonctions mesurables de

Nous regardons les propriétés de concentration de la variable aléatoireZ = sup{Sn(f ) : f ∈F} autour de
sa moyenne. Ce problème a été étudié dans une série de travaux successifs, en particulier par Talagrand [5]
au moyen d’inégalités isopérimétriques pour les mesures produits. Il a obtenu une inégalité de type Bennett
pour la déviation deZ par rapport à sa moyenne. Ensuite Ledoux [1] a montré que ces inégalités pouvaient
aussi être obtenues à partir d’inégalités de type log-Sobolev pour les mesures produit. Cette technique
permet de majorer la transformée de Laplace deZ. Massart [2] a clairement montré l’intérêt des méthodes
entropiques (ou log-Sobolev) pour le calcul des constantes dans les inégalités de Talagrand, enfin Rio [4] a
obtenu une inégalité de concentration à droite de type Bernstein avec un facteur variance asymptotiquement

1. Introduction
Dans cette Note qui annonce les résultats de [1], on se propose de définir une notion de solution
entropique pour un problème nonlocal.

Dans les dernières années plusieurs auteurs se sont intéressés aux problèmes elliptiques locaux dans L1
relatifs aux opérateurs sous forme divergentielle du type :(I) : Au = −diva(·,Du) = f dans, u = 0
sur ∂. Pourf ∈ W−1,p′(), on a l’existence et l’unicité d’une solution variationnelle dans W1,p0 ()
(voir [6]). En dehors du cadre variationnel et pourf seulement intégrable, on perd l’existence d’une
solutionu ∈ W1,p0 () et on n’a même pas existence en général d’une solution au sens des distributions
dans W1,10 (). De plus, même si une telle solution existe, on n’a pas unicité en général (voir [3]). Pour
y remédier, on a du introduire les nouvelles notions équivalentes de solution entropique, renormalisée et
SOLA (cf. [3,7,4] et [5]). Ces nouvelles notions sont aussi des solutions au sens des distributions et assurent
l’unicité dans le casp > 2 − 1/N . Dans le cas 1<p  2− 1/N , elles permettent de définir l’opérateurA
et assurent l’existence et l’unicité d’une solution pour le problème (I).

Abstract We study nonnegative harmonic functions of symmetricα-stable processes ond-setsF . We
prove the Harnack inequality for such functions whenα ∈ (0,2/dw)∪ (ds ,2). Furthermore,
we investigate the decay rate of harmonic functions and the Carleson estimate near the
boundary of a region inF . In the particular case ofnatural cells in the Sierpínski gasket

de ces processus et des processus similaires sur les fractals est récemment intensement étudiée [13,16]. Soit

Le résultat principal de cette Note est l’inégalité de Harnack. Nous montrons que pour toutα ∈
(0,2/dw) ∪ (ds,2) et toutκ > 1 il existe c3 = c3(κ) tel que pour tousx0 ∈ F , r > 0 et toute fonction
h  0, α-harmonique dansB(x0, r) on ah(x) c3h(y), x, y ∈ B(x0, r/κ). Notre outil fondamental est la
propriété faible d’échelle (3) qui remplace la propriété usuelle d’échelle du processus stable. Un autre outil
important est la formule de Ikeda–Watanabe (cf. [14]). Leur utilisation permet d’obtenir les estimations (4)
and (5) du noyau de Poisson d’une boule. C’est un point de départ pour démontrer l’inégalité de Harnack.
QuandD est une cellule naturelle (un triangle élémentaire) du triangle de Sierpiński (non-borné) nous
obtenons par la suite le principe de Harnack à la frontiére. Pour des fractals plus compliqués (p. ex. le tapis
de Sierpínski) un argument plus fin devrait être apliqué. Nous donnons aussi une estimation de la vitesse
decroissance des fonctionsα-harmoniques près de la frontière et l’estimation de Carleson.
Dans les preuves nous developpons des analogues fractals des méthodes données dans [7] pour les
domaines de Lipschitz et les processusα- tables dansRN invariants par rotation. Nous présentons les
idées des preuves de nos principaux résultats. Les preuves complètes trop longues et trop techniques pour
être incluses ici, seront données dans une publication ultérieure [10].
1. Preliminaries
Symmetric stable processes ond-sets were introduced in [18] (see also [12,13,16]). The aim of this Note
is to present the research which is a continuation of that paper. LetF b a nonempty closed subset ofRN ,

definition is slightly different from that given in [1].) Following [17] and [18] we use the Euclidean distance
instead of the shortest path metric (see [1]). Since the well known fractal diffusions were constructed in the
shortest path metric setting (e.g. [1]), (1) is virtually tantamount to the assumption that the two metrics are

The above estimate of the rate of decay of harmonic functions near the boundary corresponds to Lemma 3
in [7]. However, [7] makes an essential use of the exact formula for the Poisson kernel for the ball, which is
not available in our case. We use Proposition 3 instead. We also note that Theorem 4 holds for allα ∈ (0,2).
Proposition 5 below is an analogue of the Carleson estimate. We adapt the proof from [8] (see also [7]).
Our main contribution is the application of Theorem 2 instead of (unavailable) scaling.

Our proof of the result hinges on the simple geometry of the Sierpiński gasket (∂D is totally
disconnected) and is analogous to the proof of the boundary Harnack principle for intervals on the real
line, e.g. for Brownian motion or symmetric stable processes. It turns out that in this case the boundary
Harnack principle follows easily from the usual the Harnack inequality.
We note that for more complicated fractals (e.g. the Sierpiński carpet) more advanced methods need to
be applied.
3. Idea of proof of Theorem 1
The method of our proof depends on whether the process is point-recurrent (α > ds) or transient
(α < 2/dw). In the former case (2) yields the estimates for the Green function of a ball:

In the more interesting transient case we apply the method of regularization of the Poisson kernel, which
proved to be useful in the case of symmetric stable processes (ee [7,9]). This method yields comparability
of values of a given harmonic function with its integral over a neighborhood of a region of harmonicity.
However, possible geometrical irregularities of ourd-set F make the present proof more difficult. In

particular, in the present setting it is not clear whether or notXτD ∈ ∂D with positive probability. Our
approach shows that this event has probability 0 (comp. [7]) and provides an upper bound for the Poisson
kernel, which is crucial for the method of regularization. The key step is an estimate for the dimension
of the Euclidean sphere intersected withF , which yields relevant capacitary estimates. We note that the
application of the capacity argument imposes the restrictionα ∈ (0,2/dw). (WhenF = RN , dw = 2, this
translates intoα < 1.) This seems to be merely a technical restriction and we conjecture that Theorem 1
holds for allα ∈ (0,2).
Remark. – It is interesting whether similar results hold for other type of stable processes ond-sets
[16,12]. There are some hints that the answer, at least partially, is positive (see e.g. [16] where the
equivalence relation for the Dirichlet forms is provided). Our method, however, is closely related to the
weak scaling properties so that a new approach is needed.
For details of the proofs and more complete results we refer the reader to the forthcoming paper [10]. We
also note that similar considerations apply to symmetric (not necessarily rotation invariant) stable processes
onRN [4,9].

Spectral triples in Arakelov geometry
Abstract In this Note, we use Connes’ theory of spectral triples to provide a connection between
Manin’s model of the dual graph of the fiber at infinity of an Arakelov surface and the

In Arakelov theory a completion of an arithmetic surface is achieved by enlarging the group of divisors
by formal linear combinations of the “closed fibers at infinity”. Manin in [8] described the dual graph
of any such closed fiber in terms of an infinite tangle of bounded geodesics in a hyperbolic handlebody
X = \H3, uniformized by a Schottky group ⊂ PSL(2,C). In this Note we consider arithmetic surfaces
over the ring of integers in a number field, with fibers of genusg  2. We use Connes’ theory of spectral
triples to relate the hyperbolic geometry of the handlebody to the cohomology of the cone of the local
monodromyN at arithmetic infinity as introduced in [4]. First, we construct a spectral triple, where the
non-commutative space is given by the reduced C∗-algebra of the Schottky group acting on the cohomology
of the cone via a representation induced by the presence of a polarized Lefschetz module structure. In
this setting we recover the alternating product of the Archimedean factors from a zeta function of the
spectral triple. Then, we introduce a second spectral triple, which is related to Manin’s description of
the dual graph of the fiber at infinity. Here the non-commutative space is a C∗-algebra representing the
“reduction mod infinity” and acting on a “dynamical homology and cohomology” pair, defined in terms of
the bounded geodesics in the handlebody and of a dynamical systemT . The operator, that represents the

“logarithm of a Frobenius-type operator” on the Archimedean cohomology of [7], gives the Dirac operator
on these spectral triples. We show that the Archimedean cohomology embeds in the dynamical cohomology,
compatibly with the action of a real FrobeniusF∞, so that the duality isomorphism on the cohomology of
the cone ofN corresponds to the pairing of dynamical homology and cohomology.
A detailed version of the results presented in this Note is contained in [5].
1. Introduction
En théorie d’Arakelov une complétion d’une surface arithmétique est réalisée par l’élargissement du
groupe des diviseurs avec une combinaison linéaire formelle des «fibres fermées à l’infini ». Dans [8],
Manin a décrit le graphe dual d’une telle fibre fermée en employant un enlacement infini de géodésiques
limitées dans une variété hyperboliqueX = \H3, uniformisée par un groupe de Schottky ⊂ PSL(2,C).
Dans cette Note nous considérons des surfaces arithmétiques définies sur l’anneau des entiers d’un corps de
nombres, avec des fibres de genreg  2. Nous employons la théorie des triplets spectraux de Connes pour
rapprocher la géométrie hyperbolique de la variété avec la cohomologie du cône de la monodromie localeN
à l’infini aritmétique qui a été introduite dans [4]. D’abord, nous construisons un triplet spectral, où l’espace
non-commutatif est donné par la C∗-algèbre réduite du groupe de Schottky qui agit sur la cohomologie du
cône à travers la représentation définie par la présence d’une structure de Lefschetz module polarisée.
Dans ce cadre nous retrouvons le produit alterné des facteurs archimédiens d’une fonction zeta du triplet
spectral. Puis, nous introduisons un deuxième triplet spectral, qui est lié à la description de Manin du graphe
dual de la fibre à l’infini. Ici l’espace non-commutatif est une C∗-algèbre qui représente la « réduction
modulo infini » et qui agit sur un accouplement d’«homologie et cohomologie dynamique », définie avec
les géodésiques limitées dans la variété hyperbolique et à travers l’usage d’un système dynamiqueT .
L’opérateur, qui représente le « logarithme de Frobenius » sur la cohomologie archimédienne de [7],
donne l’opérateur de Dirac sur ces triplet spectraux. Nous prouvons que la cohomologie archimédienne
est plongée dans la cohomologie dynamique, de manière compatible avec l’action de Frobenius réelleF∞,
de sorte que l’isomorphisme de dualité sur la cohomologie du cône deN correspond à l’accouplement
d’homologie et cohomologie dynamique.
