No full text
This paper proposes new perspectives on Aristotle’s discussion of the position of the heart and the presence of blood in the lungs. The accuracy of a detailed reconstruction of the internal topography of the human body, and of the resulting discursive presentation of its visualisation, would depend upon the specific experimental conditions from which this knowledge was derived. In particular, the difficulty or even impossibility of performing dissections on human corpses and the relative diffusion of knowledge about the anatomy of other animals resulting from sacrificial practice would play important roles in the constitution of a body of human anatomical knowledge. Our analysis will also bring to light experimental biases that could have shaped Aristotle’s ideas about human anatomy. It will do so through a rigorous multidisciplinary approach that combines tools of philological and cultural-historical research on the one hand, and modern experimental data from medical science, and especially from comparative anatomy, on the other, in order to gain a better understanding of Aristotle’s discussion on the human heart and lungs (HA 1.17).</p

Deux nouvelles espèces du genre Lactarius Pers. (Russulaceae) de l’Arunachal Pradesh, Inde

No full text
Lactarius Pers. is one of the most frequently encountered ectomycorrhizal genera of the family Russulaceae. Because of its cosmopolitan nature, several taxa belonging to its three subgenera, Lactarius subg. Lactarius (Fr. ex J.Kickx f.) Kauffman, L. subg. Russularia (Fr.) Kauffman, and L. subg. Plinthogalus (Berk.) Hesler & A.H.Sm., have been documented worldwide portraying its diversity. Routine macrofungal explorations concentrating on Lactarius in two districts of Arunachal Pradesh (West Kameng and Tawang) have accounted for many species in temperate to subalpine forests. Recent observations have revealed two interesting species belonging to subgenera Lactarius and Russularia. Morphological features along with nrITS-LSU based phylogenetic analysis inferred these two species as new to science. Lactarius kamengensis sp. nov. (subg. Lactarius) is characterized as a medium-sized Lactarius with bitter to acrid taste, pale yellowish, vaguely zonate pileus, scrobiculate stipe, white latex turning pale yellowish and occurrence under Castanopsis (D.Don) Spach. Whereas, Lactarius madhuriensis sp. nov. is a unique high-altitude species belonging to subg. Russularia with brownish orange coloured, umbonate pileus, and watery white latex that turns yellowish.</p

Holocene ostracods (Crustacea) from a whale-fall excavation site from the Chao Phraya delta, Central Thailand

No full text
Late Holocene ostracods were recovered from marine sediments of the Chao Phraya delta at a whale-fall excavation site located fifteen kilometers on land in the Am Pang Subdistrict, Ban Paew District, Samut Sakhon Province, north of the Gulf of Thailand. Thirteen species belonging to seven genera are identified. The deposition environment of the succession is for the first time characterized. The ostracod assemblages suggest that the entire succession associated with the whale-fall deposited in a shallow marine environment such as estuary, bay, inner shelf, subtidal, under less than 20 meters water-depth, in brackish to normal salinity with high mud content and turbidity, on a muddy substrate. This analysis is an important step toward the first in-depth study of ostracods associated with modern and fossil shallow-water whale-falls

No full text
Of all domestic animals, dogs (Canis familiaris Linnaeus, 1758) have developed the tightest bond with humans during the history of civilization. Regardless of their chronological affiliation, articulated dog skeletons discovered in structured deposits show individuals within their biological contexts; their ageing and sexing are usually possible and even pathological histories can be reconstructed. This presentation is a concise review of five Migration Period (5th-6th century CE) deposits from western Hungary, the former territory of Roman Pannonia province. These burials are examples of dogs being interred with other animals as well as humans under various circumstances. The integration of multidisciplinary information in reconstructing both the morphotype and likely socio-cultural status of 13 individuals showed the presence of unusually large dogs in human burials by both late Antique and present-day standards. This raises the question of whether these large dogs were associated with humans or occasions that were seen as particularly significant. Could any large dog be added to the burial of a human considered important enough? The dualistic perceptions of dogs in the historical/ethnographic record offer a broad range of interpretations. The results of high-resolution zoological analysis provided by complete dog skeletons can contribute to a better understanding of dog-human relationships as well as the perception and value of individual dogs to people.</p

No full text
Bryophyte colonization on selected monuments of Champaner Pavagadh UNESCO World Heritage site was investigated. A total of seventeen bryophytes including nine liverworts, six mosses and two hornworts, causing degradation of the monuments, were recorded. The geological substrate was studied by a thin section of substratum and Powder X-Ray Diffraction analysis. Microscopic images of the thin section of geological substrate of the samples showed the presence of quartz, ferruginous materials, calcareous materials, orthoclase and plagioclase feldspar minerals. The XRD analysis spectra revealed the presence of different minerals such as aluminosilicate, calcite, muscovite, hematite, magnetite, orthoclase and plagioclase feldspar. The geological investigation showed that selected monuments are composed of the most calcareous materials. Hence, calcium uptake by Asterella wallichiana (Lehm. & Lindenb.) Grolle and Hyophila involuta (Hook.) A.Jaeger from the substratum was studied using a flame photometer. Maximum calcium uptake (i.e., 52 µg/mg) was obtained for plant samples of Asterella wallichiana compared to Hyophila involuta (i.e., 36 µg/mg). Bryophyte colonization on monuments was initiated by humus formation, followed by the protonema stage, mature gametophyte and rhizoids penetration into crevices as well as porous surfaces, forming cracks and degrading structures. This deterioration mechanism due to bryophyte colonization is explained by pictorial representation.</p

The planthopper family Caliscelidae (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Fulgoromorpha) and the tribe Adenissini are recorded here for the first time from the Socotra Archipelago (Yemen). A new genus, Oceatra gen. nov., is described for two new species from Socotra Island – Oceatra litoralis gen. et sp. nov. (type species) from coastal sand dunes and salt marshes, and O. scandens gen. et sp. nov. from evergreen montane woodland and shrub communities of the Hagher mountains. Oceatra gen. nov. is similar to Perissana Metcalf, 1952 but differs in the structure of the male style and phallobase. A key to distinguish the genera of the subtribe Adenissina is provided.</p

No full text
Two new species in the genera Goodyera R.Br. and Zeuxine Lindl. are described and illustrated. The morphological characters that distinguish Goodyera suprinii M.Pignal, sp. nov. from G. scripta (Rchb.f.) Schltr. are essentially a lip without internal lamellae at the hypochile (instead of lamellate), flowers and fruits forming an angle of 60° with the floral axis (instead of being erect almost parallel to the axis) and green ovoid fruits (instead of white and ellipsoid fruits). The characters that differentiate Z. mamiefoglianiae M.Pignal, sp. nov. from Z. samoensis Schltr. are an inflorescence with a greyish indumentum on the floral axis and bracts (instead of a green indumentum), lanceolate curved petals (instead of obovate angular petals), narrower, all-white terminal lobes of the lip (instead of bright orange-based lobes), a white throat (instead of bright orange throat), a greenish abaxial face (instead of bright orange face) and light brown internal appendages (instead of bright orange). Due to the high threats to the localities of these taxa, the proposed IUCN conservation status is EN (Endangered). The retention of G. scripta (Rchb.f.) Schltr. in the genus Goodyera R.Br. is proposed. Vrydagzynea albostriata Schltr. is mentioned for the first time in New Caledonia. An artificial key and an interactive key to the New Caledonian subtribe Goodyerinae Klotzsch are given (http://goodyerae-nouvelle-caledonie.identificationkey.org/) in English and French. Moreover, the lectotypes of Anoectochilus imitans Schltr., Goodyera triandra Schltr., Rhamphidia discoidea Rchb.f., Zeuxine francii Schltr. and the neotypes of Anoectochilus montanus Schltr., Erythrodes oxyglossa Schltr. et Goodyera grandiflora Schltr. are designated.</p

Phylogéographie d’Amansia glomerata C.Agardh (Ceramiales, Rhodomelaceae) à Hawai‘i : une seule espèce à forte divergence

No full text
Algal biogeography in Hawai‘i has not been studied in detail for many species. The islands are home to swift-current deep-water channels separating suitable habitats. The ability of these channels to act as barriers to dispersal has been studied in several animal lineages and is assessed here using the widespread red alga Amansia glomerata C.Agardh. A variety of analytical techniques based on 129 mitochondrial COI barcoding sequences collected across c. 2500 km were used to assess the genetic diversity of A. glomerata in Hawai‘i. Haplotype network analyses demonstrated that the species is split into four main lineages which overlap in large parts of their range, yet there is insufficient support to recognize the lineages as separate species. Measures of haplotype diversity, nucleotide diversity, and neutrality tests suggest that at least three of these lineages have undergone recent population expansion. Biogeographic barriers were found to largely match those of marine animal groups in the archipelago. No evidence was found for distinct haplotypes or lineages between shallow and mesophotic reefs. A number of potential collection locations are suggested for the 1822 lectotype of the species, which was included in the molecular analyses. Potential scenarios leading to observed diversity patterns in the archipelago are presented. Amansia glomerata exhibits a high degree of haplotypic variation in Hawai‘i, suggesting it may exhibit vast molecular divergences across its broader range, which extends from Hawai‘i to southeastern Africa.</p
