    The ammonoids from the <I>Gattendorfia</I> Limestone of Gattendorf (Devonian–Carboniferous boundary; Upper Franconia, Germany)

    The early Tournaisian (Early Carboniferous; Mississippian) ammonoids from the classical abandoned limestone quarry of Gattendorf (Upper Franconia) are revised, using the historical collections as well as so far undescribed material. The ammonoid assemblage is composed of prionoceratid ammonoids of the six genera Mimimitoceras, Paragattendorfia, Stockumites, Acutimitoceras, Gattendorfia and Gattenpleura, which indicate a stratigraphic position near the Devonian–Carboniferous boundary in the earliest Carboniferous. The new species Stockumites hofensis sp. nov. and S. nonaginta sp. nov. are described.</p

    This work provides the first revision and illustration of the type material of the ammonite species Parahoplites abichi Anthula [Type species of Protacanthoplites Tovbina] and Parahoplites aschiltaensis Anthula [Type species of Acanthohoplites Sinzow] from the upper Aptian (Lower Cretaceous) of Dagestan, Russia. The close affinities and synonymy between these two species are confirmed, and Acanthohoplites aschiltaensis is here retained as the senior valid name by its long quoting history and its historical use as a zonal index of the upper Aptian. The genus Protacanthoplites should be thus synonymised with Acanthohoplites by priority in the date of publication. Comparison with, and distinction from, closely allied Acanthohoplitidae is provided.</p

    New species of &lt;I&gt;Palpimanus&lt;/I&gt; Dufour, 1820 from India (Araneae: Palpimanidae, Palpimaninae), with a catalogue of the Indian palpimanid fauna

    Two new species of Palpimanus Dufour, 1820 are described from India: P. godawan Tripathi &amp; Sankaran sp. nov. (♂♀), collected from the Thar Desert in Rajasthan, and P. maldhok Kuni, Tripathi &amp; Sankaran sp. nov. (♂♀), collected from Maharashtra. Images of the endogyne and male palp of the holotype and paratype of P. narsinhmehtai Parajapati, Hun &amp; Raval, 2021 are presented to facilitate its identification. A key to Indian species of Palpimanus and a catalogue of Indian palpimanid spiders are provided. The current distribution of all the known Indian palpimanid spiders is mapped.</p

    Une grande partie de la collection de bryophytes de feu Pierre Tixier (1918-1997), déposée à l’Herbier cryptogamique du Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris (PC), n’étant pas identifiée, l’Auteur a commencé à étudier la riche collection d’espèces de Bazzania Gray avec quelques autres taxons. Elles n’ont pas été identifiées par Tixier, car de son vivant, le genre n’avait pas encore été révisé. Il y a longtemps, l’Auteur a lui-même enregistré neuf espèces du nord du Vietnam, et quelques études ont été publiées sur le Vietnam et les régions avoisinantes. Aujourd’hui, en identifiant la collection Tixier, le nombre d’espèces de Bazzania connues du Vietnam est passé à 28.As a large part of the bryophyte collection of the late Pierre Tixier (1918-1997), deposited in the Cryptogamic Herbarium of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris (PC), was unidentified, the Author has started to study the rich collection of Bazzania Gray species as well as some other taxa. They were not identified by Tixier, because during his lifetime the genus had not been revised yet. Long ago, the Author himself recorded nine species from northern Vietnam, and a couple of studies were published on Vietnam and neighbouring areas. Today, by identifying Tixier’s collection, the number of Bazzania species known in Vietnam has been increased to 28.</p

    Une espèce nouvelle est décrite de Nouvelle-Calédonie dans le genre Goniothalamus, qui comprend maintenant trois espèces endémiques de l’archipel. La plante a été collectée pour la première fois il y a plus de 150 ans, mais n’avait pas été étudiée par la suite. Elle a récemment été incluse dans une phylogénie moléculaire, qui montre que les trois espèces calédoniennes sont apparentées et appartiennent au même clade, mais se distinguent facilement par leur morphologie. Goniothalamus hmoope sp. nov. diffère de G. obtusatus par ses feuilles plus petites, et ses monocarpes térètes à 3-8 graines (vs ellipsoïdes, à 1-3 graines), et de G. dumontetii par ses feuilles plates avec des nervures secondaires planes (contre légèrement bullées avec une nervation imprimée), et ses monocarpes térètes (vs allongés aplatis avec des projections triangulaires latérales). La plante qui est limitée à la Province Nord et peut être abondante dans la chaîne du Mont Panié, a été évaluée par l’Autorité de la Liste Rouge de la Nouvelle-Calédonie comme Vulnérable (VU) selon les critères de la liste Rouge de l’UICN.Carte de distributionA new species is described from New Caledonia in the genus Goniothalamus, which now includes three endemic species from the archipelago. The new species was first collected over 150 years ago, but had not been subsequently studied until now. Material of the New Caledonian taxa was included in a recent molecular phylogeny, which shows that they are related and belong to the same clade, but they are easily distinguished from one another by morphology. Goniothalamus hmoope sp. nov. differs from G. obtusatus by its smaller leaves and its monocarps that are terete and 3-8 seeded (vs narrowly ellipsoid, ellipsoid, subglobose to obovoid, 1-3-seeded), and from G. dumontetii by its flat leaves with plane secondary veins (versus slightly bullate with impressed venation), and its monocarps that are terete (vs flattened elongate with lateral triangular projections). The new species, which is restricted to the North Province and can be abundant in the Mt. Panié range, was assessed by the New Caledonian Red List Authority as Vulnerable (VU) based on the IUCN Red List criteria.Distribution map</p

    The Australian genus of Eurybrachidae (Hemiptera, Fulgoromorpha) Kamabrachys gen. nov. is described to accommodate Platybrachys signata Distant, 1892 and Euronotobrachys plana Kirkaldy, 1906, the former being the type species. The new combinations Kamabrachys signata (Distant, 1892) gen. et comb. nov. and K. plana (Kirkaldy, 1906) gen. et comb. nov. are subsequently proposed. Ten new species are also included in the genus and described: K. andersoni gen. et sp. nov., K. brennani gen. et sp. nov., K. campbelli gen. et sp. nov., K. danielsi gen. et sp. nov., K. falcata gen. et sp. nov., K. fasciata gen. et sp. nov., K. pedemontana gen. et sp. nov., K. rieki gen. et sp. nov., K. v-carinatum gen. et sp. nov. and K. waineri gen. et sp. nov. The male and female genitalia of each species are illustrated and photographs of habitus, distribution maps, biological data and an identification key are provided. The mating behaviour of K. signata is described, illustrated and discussed. The genus Kamabrachys currently contains 12 species and is associated to trees in the family Myrtaceae.</p

    Catalogue of &lt;I&gt;Mycotretus&lt;/I&gt; Lacordaire, 1842 (Coleoptera: Erotylidae: Tritomini): an annotated, illustrated and historical approach

    The New World genus Mycotretus Lacordaire, 1842 (Erotylidae: Erotylinae: Tritomini) is the second most speciose genus within Erotylidae and is found mainly in the Neotropical region. Currently, the genus includes 231 available names, of which 204 are valid. Accurate species identification is hampered by the lack of taxonomic revisions, identification keys or an illustrated catalogue for Mycotretus. To correct this problem and to allow further studies, the objective in this paper is to provide an illustrated catalogue for Mycotretus and propose some taxonomic acts promoting taxonomic stability within the genus. The present catalogue is the result of more than six years of morphological studies and careful comparisons of specimens, including research in several scientific collections throughout America and Europe, searching for identified specimens and types of available names of Mycotretus. The historical literature was examined and all available names listed in the catalogue of Blackwelder (1945) are included here, along with updated information from the catalogue of Alvarenga (1994). Our main results are: (i) examination of types of 216 former available names within Mycotretus, including 74 types previously not examined or not located by Alvarenga (1994); (ii) lectotype designations for 143 available names of Mycotretus; (iii) proposal of 41 new synonyms and three new combinations; (iv) the number of valid species of Mycotretus is reduced from 204 to 174; (v) plates providing images (most of them types) of specimens representing most available names within Mycotretus. The present work is the first major step towards a nomenclatural stability that will allow further revisionary and phylogenetic studies on Mycotretus.</p

    Description of five new species of frog-biting midges (Diptera, Corethrellidae) from Brazil and examination of new morphological characters with utility for taxonomic and phylogenetic studies

    Family Corethrellidae has a worldwide distribution with most known extant species occurring in the Neotropics, many with only the adult stages described. Despite previous efforts, one remaining problem in the taxonomy of Corethrellidae is the challenge of delimiting species due to the current range of morphological characters included in descriptions to date. This paper discusses additional morphological evidence to distinguish species and their phylogenetic relationships. Together with fresh samples collected in Bahia, the only state in the Northeast Region with records of corethrellids, and slide-mounted specimens from other regions, five new species are described: Corethrella pindorama sp. nov., C. patasho sp. nov., C. fuscifimbria sp. nov. and C. unifasciata sp. nov. based on female adults; and C. bifida sp. nov. based on male and female adults, and larval and pupal exuviae. We also provide complementary descriptions comprising the novel characters for 33 previously described species, including the immature stages of nine. Fifteen species are newly recorded for Bahia and the Northeast Region, of which two are new records for Brazil. Additionally, we provide remarks about the biology of species, an updated list of species recorded in Brazil and an updated taxonomic key of New World species, modified from Borkent (2008).</p

    Malgré l’importance des caractères morphologiques dans la classification, les données moléculaires sont désormais plus largement utilisées que la morphologie dans les reconstructions phylogénétiques, en particulier dans les études sur les algues. La tribu Ceramieae C.Agardh ex Greville (Ceramiaceae) est un groupe répandu, spécifique et morphologiquement diversifié d’algues rouges d’intérêt avec de nombreux bioactifs identifiés. Nous avons cherché à élucider les relations phylogénétiques dans la tribu pour délimiter les genres et fournir une nouvelle classification. La délimitation générique est actuellement basée sur des caractères morphologiques, et il n’y a pas eu de réévaluation globale des circonscriptions génériques et des relations évolutives à l’aide de données moléculaires. Nous avons utilisé trois marqueurs moléculaires (COI-5P mitochondrial, rbcL chloroplastique et LSU nucléaire). Au sein des Ceramieae, plusieurs clades sont reconnus, bien que les relations entre les principaux clades ne soient pas résolues. Ces clades sont ici reconnus comme des genres, avec de nouvelles circonscriptions pour Ceramium Roth, Carpoblepharis Kützing, Herpochondria F.Schmitz &amp; Falkenberg, Campylaephora J.Agardh et Celeceras Kützing, et la proposition de Pseudoceramium Barros-Barreto &amp; Maggs, gen. nov., Yoneshiguea Barros-Barreto, Maggs &amp; M.A.Jaramillo, gen. nov. et Stirkia Barros-Barreto &amp; Maggs, gen. nov. Les Ceramieae montrent un degré élevé d’homoplasie morphologique entre les espèces ainsi qu’une plasticité phénotypique extrême au sein des espèces. Les genres manquent de synapomorphies uniques et plusieurs caractères morphologiques sont nécessaires pour définir la plupart d’entre eux. Les données moléculaires sont essentielles pour comprendre la systématique dans ce groupe.Despite the importance of morphological characters for classification, molecular data are now more widely used than morphology in phylogenetic reconstructions, particularly in studies of algae. The tribe Ceramieae C.Agardh ex Greville (Ceramiaceae) is a widespread, speciose, and morphologically diverse group of valuable red algae with many identified bioactives. We aimed to elucidate phylogenetic relationships in the tribe to delimit genera and provide a new classification. Generic delimitation is currently based on morphological characters, and there has been no overall reassessment of generic circumscriptions and evolutionary relationships using molecular data. We used three molecular markers (mitochondrial COI-5P, plastid rbcL and nuclear LSU). Within the Ceramieae, several clades are recovered, although the relationships among major clades are not supported. These clades are here recognized as genera, with new circumscriptions for Ceramium Roth, Carpoblepharis Kützing, Herpochondria F.Schmitz &amp; Falkenberg, Campylaephora J.Agardh and Celeceras Kützing, and the proposal of Pseudoceramium Barros-Barreto &amp; Maggs, gen. nov., Yoneshiguea Barros-Barreto, Maggs &amp; M.A.Jaramillo, gen. nov. and Stirkia Barros-Barreto &amp; Maggs, gen. nov. The Ceramieae show a high degree of morphological homoplasy among species as well as extreme phenotypic plasticity within species. Genera lack unique synapomorphies and multiple morphological characters are required to define most of them. Molecular data are critical for understanding systematics in this group.</p

    Ni poisson ni volaille. Indication isotopique d’un régime à base de plantes chez des ours bruns (captifs ?) du site romain d’Augusta Raurica, Suisse

    À l’époque romaine, l’ours brun (Ursus arctos Linnaeus, 1758) était l’une des plus importantes espèces d’animaux sauvages chassées. Il était tué notamment pour sa fourrure, ses dents et sa viande. Une raison pour laquelle on capturait les ours vivants, était leur utilisation pour le divertissement public, par exemple les chasses aux animaux dans les amphithéâtres. Des os d’ours découverts dans la colonie romaine d’Augusta Raurica, dans le nord-ouest de la Suisse, attestent de la chasse (ou du commerce ?) de l’ours dans cette partie de l’Empire romain. L’étude archéozoologique de plusieurs squelettes complets, indique qu’au moins un de ces ours a été tenu en captivité pour une certaine période. Les restes de quatre ours d’âges différents, déposés dans deux puits, ont été sélectionnés pour une analyse des isotopes stables du carbone et de l’azote, afin d’étudier si la vie en captivité a eu un impact sur le régime alimentaire et par conséquent sur les proportions des isotopes stables dans le collagène des os. La comparaison avec des chevaux (herbivores) et des chiens (omni-carnivores) de cette ville romaine, mais aussi avec des ours d’autres contextes préhistoriques et modernes, indique que le régime alimentaire de l’individu adulte d’Augusta Raurica était à base de plantes et ne fournit pas de preuve d’une alimentation influencée par l’homme. L’enrichissement en azote chez les jeunes ours s’explique probablement par l’allaitement. On ne peut pas exclure entièrement que l’enrichissement isotopique résulte d’une alimentation influencée par l’homme, mais la comparaison des isotopes stables des ours bruns sauvages et des chiens et chevaux du même site contrarie cette hypothèse.In Roman times, the brown bear (Ursus arctos Linnaeus, 1758) was one of the most important hunted wild animal species. Bears were killed for e.g. their furs, their teeth and their meat. One of the reasons for catching bears alive was for their use in the context of public entertainment, i.e., animal hunts in amphitheatres. Bear bones from the Roman settlement of Augusta Raurica, NW Switzerland, attest the tradition of hunting (or trading?) bears in this part of the Roman Empire. Archaeozoological investigations of several complete bear skeletons from this site indicated that at least one bear was kept in captivity for some period. The remains of four bears, deposited in two wells, were selected for stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis to explore whether life (stages) in captivity had an impact on the diets and in consequence to the stable isotope ratios in bear bone collagen. A comparison with (herbivorous) horses and (omni-)carnivorous dogs from the same Roman city and with bears from other prehistoric and modern contexts indicates that the diet of the adult brown bear specimen from Augusta Raurica was plant-based and does not provide evidence of human-influenced feeding in (prolonged) captivity. Nitrogen enrichment in the young bears is most likely explained by suckling. Human-influenced additional feeding in captivity cannot be completely ruled out but the enrichment results from stable isotope data from wild brown bear data from the literature and from dogs and equids from the same site argue suggest that this was not taking place.</p
