Parasironidae fam. nov., a Cimmerian lineage of Mediterranean Cyphophthalmi (Opiliones), with the description of three new genera and four new species

No full text
A new family of Cyphophthalmi with disjunct Mediterranean distribution, Parasironidae fam. nov., is proposed. The new family comprises four genera and seven species. Cimmerosiro gen. nov., Tirrenosiro gen. nov. and Ebrosiro gen. nov. are described as new genera, and Tirrenosiro axeli gen. et sp. nov., Cimmerosiro krivolutskyi gen. et sp. nov., C. juberthiei gen. et sp. nov. and C. rhodiensis gen. et sp. nov. as new species. Parasironidae stands out by a set of characteristics that we recognize as predominantly plesiomorphic. These characteristics and the present distribution indicate the great age of the family, probably early Mesosoic. We attribute its origin to the western part of the Cimmerian terrane, and its current distribution and diversification of the major clades to geotectonic events during the Mesozoic. Additionally, a new sensory organ (sensilla) has been discovered in Cyphophthalmi. This organ is located on the pedipalp coxae and is believed to have a potential hygroreceptive function.A new family of Cyphophthalmi with disjunct Mediterranean distribution, Parasironidae fam. nov., is proposed.

No full text
The article addresses the challenges posed by the interdisciplinary collaboration that led to the recent Nature article presenting results of the extraction of ancient human DNA from a perforated deer tooth found in Denisova Cave. We provide a critical analysis of the contextual data that directly impacts the interpretation of the genetic data and the evaluation of the potential of the new DNA extraction technique for future studies. We discuss in greater detail Denisova, the only site that has produced truly exploitable palaeogenetic results. We highlight major unresolved dating inconsistencies at Denisova that need inquiry and explanation. We also emphasize the lack of an appropriate theoretical framework in the analysis of the tooth, of information on the lateralization, sex, age, perforation technique, wear, on the ochre residues, and the release of erroneous information on the associated faunal assemblage. We conclude that quality archaeological data and their sound evaluation should complement paleogenetic data to create unified, reliable, and verifiable narratives about human history.</p

We describe a new genus of symmoriiform chondrichthyan from the Late Mississippian Fayetteville Shale of Arkansas, United States, and include this fossil in a phylogenetic analysis of chondrichthyans. This taxon possesses elongate cartilaginous rays extending from the gill arches, forming an operculate structure that covers at least two of the branchial arches farther posteriorly. Although presence of a ‘hyoid operculum’ has been postulated in at least two unrelated Paleozoic sharks (e.g., Triodus, Tristychius), subsequent investigations failed to corroborate those claims. The new fossil therefore provides the first evidence of an endoskeletal operculum formed by elongate, fused pharyngeal arch rays in a chondrichthyan.</p

First record of the genus <i>Lissocnemis</i> Kohl, 1907 (Insecta: Hymenoptera: Pompilidae: Ctenocerinae) from Korea, with a new species and an unrecorded species

The genus Lissocnemis Kohl, 1907 of the subfamily Ctenocerinae is recorded from Korea for the first time. The diagnosis and characteristics of the genus, description of a new species, L. koreana Kim & Shimizu sp. nov. and redescription of another species, L. brevipennis hitherto known from Southeast Asia and Japan, are presented. The biogeographical distribution of the genus is discussed. Cryptosalius Turner, 1917 (type species: Pseudagenia rava Bingham, 1896; in part) and Dinagenia Banks, 1934 (type species: D. apollo Banks, 1934) are synonymized with Lissocnemis and the following new combinations are made: Lissocnemis tonkinensis (Turner, 1920) comb. nov. (= Cryptosalius tonkinensis Turner, 1920); Lissocnemis apollo (Banks, 1934) comb. nov. (= Dinagenia apollo Banks, 1934); and Lissocnemis satyrus (Banks, 1938) comb. nov. (= Dinagenia satyrus Banks, 1938). Lastly, L. satyrus (Banks, 1938) and L. nigricoxis Haupt, 1941 are rendered to be junior synonyms of L. apollo (Banks, 1934) comb. nov.</p

No full text
The mustelid assemblage from Hunas is represented by seven species: Gulo gulo gulo (Linnaeus, 1758), Meles meles (Linnaeus, 1758), Lutra lutra groissii Heller, 1983, Martes martes (Linnaeus, 1758), Mustela putorius Linnaeus, 1758, Mustela erminea Linnaeus, 1758 and Mustela nivalis Linnaeus, 1766. Most species have been found in the G1-G3 complex, while their remains in other layers are rare. The guild is dominated by remains of Mustela nivalis, for which well-preserved and stratified material shows a large, robust weasel, with a notable predominance of males. The morphology of Mustela nivalis, together with the occurrence of Lutra lutra (Linnaeus, 1758), allowed us to estimate the age of the horizon at MIS 7.</p

The discovery and description of new species of Solenogastres (Mollusca, Aplacophora) is still routine, even from relatively well-known regions, but less effort is focused on the redescription of known species. Phylogenetic studies have shown that significant revisionary systematic work is needed in this group and enhanced morphological descriptions and molecular data will be valuable in these pursuits. Additionally, advancing knowledge on the real distribution and diversity of these molluscs adds to an increased understanding of marine biodiversity in general. Here, we present the study of 47 solenogasters collected during the “Our Planet Reviewed” expedition to Corsica (Mediterranean Sea). Following an integrative taxonomic approach (considering observations of live animals, habitat, morphology, and DNA barcoding), we identified ten species across seven different families: Dondersiidae Simroth, 1893; Lepidomeniidae Pruvot, 1902; Pruvotinidae Heath, 1911; Rhopalomeniidae Salvini-Plawen, 1978; Simrothiellidae Pilsbry, 1898; Proneomeniidae Simroth, 1893 and Strophomeniidae Salvini-Plawen, 1978. Notably, these findings constitute the first documented records of solenogasters off Corsica. In light of the studied material, the synonymy of three Pruvotinidae species (Eleutheromenia sierra (Pruvot, 1890), E. carinata Salvini-Plawen & Öztürk, 2006, and Gephyroherpia impar Zamarro, García-Álvarez & Urgorri, 2013) is proposed. This taxonomic clarification highlights the need for more study of Pruvotinidae. Further, the value of live observations (very rare in solenogasters) for better description of species and their importance for species identification is emphasized in this work. Taken together, the outcomes of our investigation demonstrate the value of species redescriptions, underscore the necessity for revisionary systematics and taxonomy of Solenogastres, and address a gap in our understanding of their diversity in the Mediterranean Sea with the first documentation of the group in Corsican waters.</p

« Il triomphe des obstacles, il traverse les espaces » (Plin., <i>NH</i> 8.35.86) : la mémoire spatiale des serpents au regard des témoignages littéraires anciens

No full text
Until recently, scientists believed snakes to have little spatial ability. However, new behavioural experiments have proven that snakes display a capacity for spatial learning, and therefore possess spatial memory. Beginning with Homer, the snake appears throughout antiquity in all possible literary genres. The considerable amount of the extant ancient literary source material leads to the following research question: Did the Greeks and Romans attribute the snake with a fully-functional spatial memory based on their observations of the animal’s behaviour? The answer is positive. It was believed in antiquity that the snake had a well-developed spatial memory. According to the ancient authors, vision was the basic sense that allowed the snake to travel efficiently and to remember its path. The ancients had many occasions (in public and private spaces) to learn about the behaviour of the reptile. The ancient authors describing the behaviour of the snake most often relied on knowledge collected through numerous incidents of contact with the animal. Although the extant accounts are comprised mostly of anecdotes and sometimes myths, a critical analysis of these accounts indicates that the ancient authors were interested in the abilities of the snake that have only just started to gain recognition in modern science.</p
