Chinese pond mussels are known as a successful invasive species, spreading rapidly almost around the world. Here, we report the first record of Sinanodonta aff. woodiana (Lea, 1834) in Afghanistan. The species was observed in the Amu Darya River in Qala-I-Zal, Kunduz Province. DNA barcoding revealed that the Afghan population belongs to the temperate invasive lineage that is widespread in Europe. Consistent with our phylogenetic data, the haplotype network showed that the alien population in Afghanistan shared the same COI haplotype as non-indigenous populations from Kazakhstan, Siberia, European Russia, Myanmar and Europe, suggesting a common origin from a single source population in China. Sinanodonta aff. woodiana seems to have been introduced into Afghanistan via waterways from the Middle Asia and/or fish hosts. The presence of individuals between one to eight years old indicates that S. aff. woodiana can survive and breed in the environmental conditions of the Amu Darya River in Afghanistan. Further spread and colonisation of S. aff. woodiana in the Amu Darya is not unexpected due to of some human-mediated dispersal events and waterways in the region. Some identified invasive populations of Sinanodonta sp. based on the available databases are under discussion, as there are at least eight lineages within Sinanodonta complex, each could indicate a separate cryptic species. Further work should be addressed to evaluate the taxonomy of this morphologically variable group.</p

The reconstruction process of the skull and skeleton represents a critical step in the study of fossil vertebrates and is often responsible for how the evolutionary history of a taxon is interpreted. It is also an important step in any test of the researcher’s understanding of the anatomy of the fossil. Even so, there is no recognized method for its completion, leaving the actual process to the individual undertaking the investigation. While this is often accomplished in an appropriate manner, there remains extensive room for error. With the onset of cladistic methodology dating back to the 1980s, character state description has become ever more critical in establishing phylogenetic histories, and over a period of 40 years, character state interpretation has often relied on specimen drawings and reconstructions. Based on a career dedicated to the detailed skeletal reconstruction of tetrapods, the content presented here highlights a stepwise approach that is designed to minimize error and increase the value of fossil reconstructions. We describe the skull reconstruction of the Palaeozoic tetrapod Limnoscelis paludis Williston, 1911 and highlight some of the more critical strategies that are necessary to maximize accuracy and hence increase phylogenetic reliability as well as support opportunities for testing anatomical interpretations as well as functional and ultimately behavioural interpretations. We also take the opportunity to highlight the extensive career contributions made to the field of palaeontology by Diane Scott, who for over 40 years has represented the nec plus ultra of fossil preparation, illustration, and reconstruction.</p
We report here new craniodental remains from the late Eocene Krabi coal mine in Thailand that can be attributed to the suoid Siamochoerus banmarkensis Ducrocq, Chaimanee, Suteethorn & Jaeger, 1998. This material that includes the complete lower dentition and isolated upper molars provides new information on the dental morphology of this species and makes S. banmarkensis, together with Egatochoerus jaegeri Ducrocq, 1994 from Krabi, the second best documented early suoid in the Eocene of Asia. A few dental features that can be observed on these new remains suggest that S. banmarkensis might be more closely related to Suidae Gray, 1821, but it also illustrates the difficulty to attribute a precise taxonomic position to Eocene taxa.</p
In this paper we present a bibliographical review of the newly described Brazilian cyanobacterial genera, based on 16S rDNA analysis. Moreover, we discuss their position according to the current classification system of Cyanobacteria. Additionally, in order to comprehend the diversity of Brazilian 16S rDNA sequences deposited in GenBank (NCBI), we constructed a phylogeny based on an alignment of these sequences with cyanobacterial reference strains. The bibliographical review resulted in 26 papers. We identified 30 cyanobacterial genera described from Brazil, distributed across eight orders. The order Nostocales is the most well-represented with 11 genera. The genera described based on Brazilian strains are from terrestrial, aquatic (marine and freshwater), and extreme habitats (alkaline saline lakes). The terrestrial habitat hosts the largest number of genera, with 17 in total. The studies are primarily concentrated in the Atlantic Rainforest, Amazon, Caatinga, and Pantanal Biomes, while the Pampa Biome remains unstudied. Most of the Brazilian genera are monophyletic, with the exception of Brasilonema Fiore, Sant’Anna, de Paiva Azevedo, Komarek, Kaštovský, Sulek & Lorenzi, which is intermixed with Iphinoe Lamprinou & Pantazidou and Symphyonemopsis Tiwari & Mitra; and Capilliphycus Caires, Sant’Anna & Nunes, which is polyphyletic. Genera like Marmoreocelis Machado-de-Lima & Branco, Monilinema Malone, Genuário, Vaz, Fiore & Sant’Anna, Insularia Araújo, Schnadelbach, Nunes & Caires, and Microlinema Araújo, Schnadelbach, Nunes & Caires require revision in their taxonomical classifications. Our findings reveal that numerous Brazilian 16S rDNA sequences in GenBank are unidentified or misidentified, indicating a need for at least 15 genera to be described based on these strains. Here we also elucidate that the Brazilian cyanobacterial diversity is significantly underestimated.</p

The first sawfly from the Oligocene of Céreste (Southern France) (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae)
Luberotenthredo cerestensis gen. et sp. nov. is the first record of the sawfly family Tenthredinidae from the Oligocene of Céreste (Southern France). This taxon is described and illustrated based on a well-preserved specimen. This genus resembles the extant genus Perineura (subfamily Tenthredininae, tribe Perineurini) with which it shares forewing venation similarities and numerous morphological characters. This new taxon is the first fossil representative of the tribe Perineurini and can be used as a calibration point for future investigation of the diversification of the family Tenthredinidae.</p
An unknown species of Roccellaceae Chevall. was collected in 2022 and 2023 on the bark of trunks in a rainforest in Basse-Terre island (Guadeloupe, Lesser Antilles). Phylogenetic analyses using mtSSU, nuLSU and RPB2 sequences reveal the placement of the species in the genus Mazosia A.Massal. (Roccellaceae). The lichen is unusual for the genus by being the first species of Mazosia developing a byssoid thallus. It is described as Mazosia byssoidea Lebreton & Ertz, sp. nov. Besides it byssoid thallus, the new species is characterized by 1-septate ascospores, stipitate pycnidia and a chemistry with roccellic acid. Together, all these features make the new species a distinctive and important addition to the Arthoniales Henssen ex D.Hawksw. & O.E.Erikss. So far, it is only known from two large trees in a dense humid forest at low elevation, a locality that needs to be included in a protected area. A key to the corticolous species of Mazosia is provided.</p
The Large Blue Phengaris arion (Linnaeus, 1758) is one of the most studied parasitic organism in Europe. This myrmecophilous butterfly is entirely dependent on the simultaneous presence of a specific host plant and a host ant of the Myrmica Latreille, 1804, genera. Our study aims to better understand the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on the occurrence and habitat selection of Myrmica ants. We studied the habitat selection by ants in 12 meadows previously known to host populations of large blue. Thirty plots of four square meters were sampled in each meadow. We also conducted phytosociological survey and we compiled the management history in each meadow. We found the presence of two Myrmica species potentially hosts of the large blue : M. spinosior Santschi, 1931 and M. specioides Bondroit, 1918. The habitat selection showed that the occurrence of Myrmica increased with herbaceous cover proportion and decreased with the bare ground cover proportion. Despite the thermophilous nature of these two species within the genus Myrmica, these results suggest that a high grass cover rate is needed for the maintenance of favorable conditions for these species’ anthills. Thus, the maintenance of Myrmica depends on these high-vegetated meadows, partially abandoned lands, a transitional vegetation stage that it is challenging to maintain. In a Mediterranean context, we recommend an as late as possible grazing in season with the maintaining of high herbaceous layer in meadows hosting host ants of P. arion. The total removal of the herbaceous layer is to be avoided.</p
Virescentia asiatica sp. nov.
This study introduced a new species of freshwater red alga discovered in Taiwan, Virescentia asiatica sp. nov. Using genetic and morphological analyses, we determined its taxonomic status and phylogenetic relationship among other species of Virescentia (Sirodot) Necchi, D.C.Agostinho & M.L.Vis. While Virescentia taxonomy and species diversity have been extensively explored in Europe and the Americas, Asia remained less studied, with only one new species described in China. This study was the first record of Virescentia in Taiwan and confirmed it as a new species, Virescentia asiatica sp. nov. The investigation was based on comparing morphological characteristics and genetic markers rbcL and COI-5P in collections from around the world. Molecular evidence showed what we describe as V. asiatica sp. nov. forming a well-supported clade with four previously unidentified Virescentia sequences from Japan, and conspecific with at least three of these. We considered it likely that V. asiatica sp. nov. inhabited a wider geographic range in East Asia, including other regions besides Taiwan and Japan. Morphologically, Virescentia asiatica sp. nov. was distinct only in habit, differing from other Virescentia species in having an apparently diminutive thallus and curved branching. This study enhanced our understanding of the classification and phylogenetic relationships within Virescentia, contributing to the knowledge of freshwater red algae biodiversity in East Asia.</p
