No full textDer Erfahrungs- und Handlungsraum des Archivs hat mit den ihm eigenen Zwecken im menschlichen Alltag seinen Ursprung: Es gibt eine »Sphäre des Archivischen«, welche die institutionellen Archive umgibt und über sie hinausweist. In diesem Beitrag wird auf zwei Situationen individuellen Lebens eingegangen, in denen ein Umgang mit der Vergangenheit anhand materieller Überreste stattfindet, ganz gleich, ob es sich jeweils um Schriftstücke, Bilder oder Gegenstände handelt: beim Wohnen mit ›Dingen von früher‹ und bei der Suche nach Wahrheit aufgrund eines Schicksalsschlags, von dem man nicht loskommt. Die Lebensnähe des Archivs, die hier exemplarisch sichtbar wird, steht in einem gewissen Kontrast zu charakteristischen Eigenschaften der institutionellen Archive: Archivalien werden im Interesse des Erhalts in sicheren Depots gelagert, und sie besitzen in ihrer Absonderung die Aura des Originalen.The archive, understood as a place of experience and action, has its own set of purposes rooted in daily life. There is an «archival sphere», surrounding and going beyond the professionally organized archival services. In this chapter, two types of personal life situations will be treated in which we are dealing with the past by using material remnants, whether they are writings, images or objects. The situations to be discussed are, firstly, living with things of the past and, secondly, seeking the truth after a stroke of fate that we are not able to leave behind. In view of these examples it turns out that archival attitudes are, in their origin, close to real life. This forms a contrast to peculiar characteristics of archival institutions: Archival records are locked away and stored safely in a depot for preservation, and they have the aura of unique documents

Building a Way to the City? Asking about Objects, Conditions, and Essence as a Methodology for Approaching the Urban
Full text linkDer Artikel beschäftigt sich mit der Frage: Was macht die Stadt zu dem, was sie ist? Auch wenn Fragen für gewöhnlich eine Antwort fordern, zeigt der Beitrag, dass es auch andere Wege gibt, sich ihnen zu nähern. Inspiriert vom Philosophen Martin Heidegger eröffnet er auch die Strategie, mit sensiblem Fragen das Befragte einzuladen, sich nicht nach bestehenden Definitionen zu präsentieren, sondern authentisch, zu seinen eigenen Bedingungen.
The purpose of this paper is to address a question: what makes a city what it is? Admittedly, asking a question usually aims at finding an answer, but, as I will explain in the following, there are other ways to approach questions. Inspired by the German philosopher Martin Heidegger, and in particular his lecture on ›The Question Concerning Technology‹, I will demonstrate that sensible questioning can work as an invitation for the object questioned in this way to reveal itself, not as a captive caught in pre-established definitions, but as an authentic being revealing itself on its own terms
