Evaluation of potato genotypes against early blight (Alternaria alternata) of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.)
Early blight (Alternaria alternata) of the potato is the most destructive disease in tropical and sub-tropical countries. Natural epidemics of early blight are strongly influenced by environmental conditions, even though severe disease appears every year in northern India. Twenty-eight genotypes were used in this study to differentiate between early blight resistance and susceptible genotypes selected to represent a range of reactions when screened field conditions. Out of twenty-eight genotypes/varieties, six genotypes viz., CP-3021, 3153, Atlantic, Chip-3, Jx-161 and MS/78-62 showed a resistant reaction. While thirteen genotypes were moderately resistant. However, six genotypes were susceptible while three genotypes were highly susceptible. Resistant varieties can be the simplest, effective and economical method of plant disease control. The use of resistant varieties cannot only ensure protection against diseases but also save the time, energy and money spent on other control methods
Impact through frontline demonstrations on yield, yield gap and economics of drumstick farming in arid Kachchh of Gujarat
Drumstick (Moringa oleifera L.) is one of the world’s most nutritious crops and is one of the most popular vegetables grown throughout India. It has helped mankind in combating malnutrition in children and increasing immunity. Front-line demonstration (FLDs) is one of the most popular tools for technology transfer. ICAR-CAZRI, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kukma, Bhuj conducted field studies for two consecutive years of 2016-17 and 2017-18 through frontline demonstrations (FLDs) on yield and economics of drumstick farming in different villages of Bhachau and Bhuj Talukas of Kachchh, Gujarat. This tree is easy to cultivate, resistant to drought and produces a high concentration of protein, vitamins and minerals. It is a rare horticulture crop which begins fruiting within six months of planting and continues to do so for a period of eight to nine years. In Kachchh, Gujarat, the crop has been just introduced owing to its suitability in arid conditions of the region. The average pod yield under demonstration was 197.80 q ha–1 compared to the farmer’s local variety (158.88 q ha–1) and increased significantly by 24.50% on average over farmers used variety. The average extension gap, technology gap and technology index were 3892 kg ha-1, 5220 kg ha-1 and 20.88%, respectively. By adopting improved variety, farmers get additional average returns of Rs. 57,630 ha-1 and B: C ratio of 4.82
Growth attributes and wood properties of lesser-grown agroforestry tree species in the semi-arid zone for quality pulp and paper production
Growth traits, wood properties, fibre dimensions and fibre derived indices of five lesser-grown agroforestry tree species viz., Ailanthus excelsa, Eucalyptus tereticornis, Leucaena leucocephala, Melia dubia and Neolamarckia cadamba were studied to evaluate the suitability of these species for pulp and paper production in the semi-arid zone of Bundelkhand, India. The result showed that there was a significant variation for all the studied traits. The range of all the studied growth and wood traits among five pulpwood trees were recorded for tree height (5.2-5.9 m), GBH (20-24 cm), volume (0.017-0.027 m3), biomass (8.50-15.28 kg), wood basic density (509.6-584.4 kg/m3), fibre length (819.8-1416.0 μm), fibre diameter (14.6-37.9 μm), fibre lumen diameter (7.5-29.8 μm), fibre double cell wall thickness (4.8-9.7 μm), Runkel ratio (0.23-0.94), Rigidity coefficient (0.19-0.49), Flexibility coefficient (51.54-81.44), Slenderness ratio (31.68-62.74) and Luce’s shape factor (0.20-0.58). Kadamb performed better, however all five species were found to be suitable for making good quality pulp and paper on the basis of wood properties and fibre derived indices grown in such hot and dry conditions. Tree height and GBH traits were positively influenced on the wood physical and anatomical properties, therefore these traits can be used as indirect selection for further improvement of the species which shown high potentiality for promising pulpwood tree species under agroforestry. Further, tree improvement research work required to test the suitable harvesting period for high pulp yield and better paper quality to fulfil the fastest growing demand of pulpwood for paper industries in India
Effects of phosphorus application on bunch and spreading genotypes of groundnut
Farm of Afghanistan National Agricultural Sciences and Technology University (ANASTU), Kandahar, Afghanistan to find out most suitable groundnut variety and their phosphorus levels in the study region. The treatments combination was of two groundnut varieties (Kormaki and Paparri) and four levels of phosphorus as P2O5 (P0= 0 kg P2O5 ha-1, P1=40 kg P2O5 ha-1, P2= 60 kg P2O5 ha-1 and P3= 80 kg P2O5 ha-1), were tested in a split plot design. Result revealed that Paparri variety produced significantly higher growth attributes (plant height, dry matter accumulation and number of main branches plant-1) and yield attributes (number of pods plant-1, pods dry weight plant-1, 100 kernel weight and shelling percentage) over Kormaki variety. Likwise, paparri variety produced significantly higher pods yield, kernel yield, haulm yield and biological yield over kormaki variety. In the like manner, significantly higher gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio was recorded from Paparri variety, whereas residual nitrogen was found significantly higher in kormaki variety. Among phosphorus levels, 60 kg P2O5 ha-1 recorded higher values for growth parameters, yield attributes viz. number of pods plant-1, pods weight plant-1, 100 kernel weight and shelling percentage, and yields (including pods yield, kernel yield, haulm yield and biological yield)
Identification of early maturing and leaf determinate growth habit type accessions of cluster bean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba L. Taub.)
Cluster bean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba L. Taub.), commonly known as guar, is a member of the family Papilionaceae, cultivated in the Indian Sub-continent since time immemorial. It is a drought-hardy leguminous annual crop used variously for vegetables, forage and green manure. There is tremendous variability available in Indian cluster bean germplasm. Genetic resources with their enormous variability for different characters provide the base for the improvement of crop plants. Within genetic resources, genetic stocks are expected to play a major role in future crop improvement programmes. One promising unbranched, single-stemmed and flower determinate growth habit bearing accession IC-140784P1, developed through single plant selection at ICAR-NBPGR Regional Station Jodhpur starts flowering at 23 days after sowing and flowers 50% at 32 days after sowing. This accession does mature only 82 days after sowing. These accessions mature about 10-15 days early compared to normal existing improved cultivars, which take 90-95 days for maturity. Another accession IC 569315 has been characterized as leaf determinate (in which the stem terminates into the leaf) with alternate cluster-bearing habit. Effect of GA3 and NAA on yield and benefit: cost ratio of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) cv. Chandler under the open condition of Manipur
The present experiment was conducted at the experimental field of the College of Agriculture, Central Agricultural University, Imphal, Manipur during the session 2021-22. It was Entitled as the effect of GA3 and NAA on yield and benefit: cost ratio of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) cv. Chandler under open conditions of Manipur. The experiments plot was laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replication and nine treatments with the combination of GA3 and NAA viz., T1 (Control), T2 (GA3 25 ppm), T3 (GA3 50 ppm), T4 (GA3 75 ppm), T5 (GA3 100 ppm), T6 (NAA 25 ppm), T7 (NAA 50 ppm), T8 (NAA 75 ppm) and T9 (NAA 100 ppm), the treatment GA3 @ 75 ppm was found maximum concerning several fruits, fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit volume, specific gravity, harvesting duration, yield and B: C ratio as compared with other treatments and the minimum was recorded in control. Hence, it is concluded that treatment T4 (GA3 75 ppm) positively impacts yield and benefit: cost ratio of strawberry cv. Chandler under open conditions of Manipur
नील हरित शैवाल एवं अजोला का धान की खेत में उपयोग करे: किसान भाई
नील हरित शैवाल जलीय पौधों का एक ऐसा समूह होता है, जिसे साइनो बैक्टीरिया भी कहा जाता हैं यह एक कोशिकीय जीवाणु है, जो काई के रूप/आकार का होता है। जैसा की किसान भाइयों को पता होगा की इस जीवाणु को धान की फसल के लिए वायुमण्डलीय नाइट्रोजन को भूमि में संस्थापित कराने के उद्देश्य से उपयोग में लाया जाता है। नील हरित शैवाल का कार्य यह है की प्रकाश संश्लेषण से ऊर्जा ग्रहण करके वायुमण्डलीय नाइट्रोजन का भूमि में स्थिरीकरण करता है
